I read the book for high school, and adapting it now is... A choice. The themes are VERY relevant to current politics, so changing up the messaging can really, really break it. The ending of the trailer suggests it'll be darker than the opening made it seem, but I'm worried they'll totally change the messaging and mess it up.
Despite Animal Farm‘s well-known origins as a political satire, Serkis noted back in 2012 when this project was first revealed that “We’re keeping it fable-istic and [aimed at] a family audience. We are not going to handle the politics in a heavy-handed fashion. It is going to be emotionally centered in a way that I don’t think has been seen before. The point of view that we take will be slightly different to how it is normally portrayed and the characters. We are examining this in a new light.”
I don't like anything in that paragraph. Politics is literally the whole purpose of the story. Usually I'm all for fleshing out the emotional side of a story and its characters, but Animal Farm is an exception. The animals represent concepts more than anything. This is one of the few stories where I believe they need to stay relatively one-dimensional, or else the overall message will be lost in debates over the various characters' moralities. We don't need to see Napoleon showing a fatherly side like the trailer suggests, that's just going to confuse people and raise arguments about "well he's not ALL bad!"
I think the only reason they're going that direction is because it's about animals, and thus only kids would want to see it. If it were about humans, I doubt they'd be making it an emotionally-driven family film. This story was NOT meant for families though, Nd the trailer just gives me all the cringey dumbed-down feelings I get from way too many kids' movies these days.
Hmmm if it wasn't for the title, the trailer seems to suggest this is an animated crooked eyebrow Seth Rogen light hearted comedy about rejecting your father's hypocrisy. My fear is they might end...

My fear is they might end it with "not all pigs are bad, look, some of them might walk on two legs and eat in the house while your children are sold for money and your retirement is at the glue factory, but they got rid of the bad pigs. This one percenter is hip and cool and on your side. He's a job creator and we're all just temporarily embarrassed farmers." I hope my cynicism is wide of the mark.
woof. wrong voice actor with a really dated render for some reason. I wish they'd stop casting big named actors for voice work when their voice is so distinct.

Hm. I hope they clean up the models a bit. The hair looks way too perfect, they need to add some noise and random variations to it. Honestly it looks like it was made in pre-2010 Blender. Not bad,...

Honestly it looks like it was made in pre-2010 Blender. Not bad, but also not great when compared to modern 3D Animation. It reminds me of Big Buck Bunny and similar Blender Institute proof of concepts pre-2010.

The 1954 version of Animal Farm was one of my favourite movies when I was very young. My parents told me I would watch it over and over. Of course at that age, the political messaging would go way over my head. I just liked watching the cute animals. This isn't a movie I was expecting to see remade. I still have something of a soft spot for the original, so I'm a bit concerned with the direction this one is taking. I'll reserve judgement until I see more, and will probably check it out anyway.

And this article by Gizmodo suggests they are.

Ugh this is exactly what I feared. I get why they would
tinetone it down, I just can't help but feel disappointed.Hmmm if it wasn't for the title, the trailer seems to suggest this is an animated crooked eyebrow Seth Rogen light hearted comedy about rejecting your father's hypocrisy.

I love that for you, having hope is really nice ;)
