I enjoyed it. In terms of live action remakes, it's not a bad one - probably not the best, but it's a hard story to translate. Dragons don't look good in CGI. That being said, the dragons designs are pretty faithful and I enjoyed seeing them.
Hiccups actor did a fine job. Astrid's acting felt a bit flat. Gerard Butler and Nick Frost did a great job.
I have never seen the original cartoon. That said, I am thinking about taking my 8 and 9 year old nephews to see this movie.
If anyone has seen it, how does it compare to the cartoon movie?
It's a shot by shot remake. Same director was involved for both.
Please tell me they didn't screw up the "Test Flight" sequence!
(I worked for a competing animation studio at the time, but thought they absolutely, beautifully nailed that one in the original.)
I saw a couple of brief clips on youtube, and from what I can tell they didn't do this scene justice. The original has much more detail, and the score is absolutely perfectly synced in a way that makes me feel very emotional watching it even years later. The new version just doesn't have the same feels.
I think I'll save my money and just watch the original this weekend rather than going to the theater. :)
From what I remember there’s more of a calmness to the first flight scene in the animated movie. The scene here reminded me of the scene in Prisoner of Azkaban when Harry flies on the Hippogriff. The director also stated being inspired by Top Gun Maverick for the flying sequences
Thanks
One of my best friends has been absolutely obsessed with the original since it came out and they really enjoyed it. They liked the costumes and sets and described it as a love letter to the original. Based on their assessment alone I think it's probably worth watching.
I loved the original trilogy and haven't seen this yet. It's not surprising though. This is fueled by nostalgia and it is a kid's film with good storytelling.
I don't foresee this being better than the original, but I'm still gonna watch it
