Also, looks like Rian Johnson lost the Knives Out branding fight.
Kpop Demon Hunters just had a similar short theatrical run. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KPop_Demon_Hunters It looks like it pulled $19.2M in the US for its limited weekend run.

The sing-along version of KPop Demon Hunters debuted in theaters on August 23, 2025[75][76] and was initially projected to gross between $18–20 million from 1,700 theatres during its opening weekend.[77] It was the widest ever theatrical release for a Netflix release, beating out the 698 theatres that Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) opened in, and became the first Netflix film to finish in first place over the weekend.[78] It also became the best-performing theatrical release for the platform, beating out Glass Onion ($13.1 million in 2022).[79] However, Netflix opted out of reporting grosses.[76]

its so cool to see some older formats in use. Any idea what sparked this revival? We had some around the 00's (Phantom Menace, Flight Plan), but not a lot in between so far as I know

I would say primarily The Brutalist. Theres articles about the film going back to 2020 (when it was originally supposed to start production) and the film being shot on a premium format on such a small budget certainly peaked interest. I remember prior to its premiere at Venice there were articles written about it being a masterpiece and an instant classic.
The format never really went away, Poor Things used VistaVision in some of its VFX shots. Famously, during the truck flipping sequence in The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan used a VistaVision camera for coverage as there weren’t enough IMAX cameras available at the time.
But yeah, The Brutalist made filmmakers want to shoot on it again.
Spoiler for the preview I’m dying to know if Jeremy Renner is playing himself, especially since Jeremy Renner canonically exists in the Knives Out universe.

Have you read the Thursday Murder Club books or watched the movie? It has a very Agatha Christie-esque vibe.
I have not, but I'll absolutely check it out! Thank you for the rec!

Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will be getting a two week release on IMAX. The film is being shot on VistaVision.
VistaVision! I'm glad its being used again. The Brutalist was beautiful for this.

hm nice. good film to feature the format, too. I wish we could search imdb by the format... there's probably a way.
Heres the Wikipedia page
yeah, but there should be a way with imdb directly. https://www.imdb.com/search has audio and some others, but not this. I use the collabs a lot.

He is not. Check out the IMDb page.
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. (/noise)
