I rotten tomatoed this movie yesterday, the critic's reviews (all 7 of them) made it clear that it's thinly veiled anti-immigrant propaganda. One called it "astonishingly bad".

If that wasn't enough to convince me not to watch it, apparently Musk made it available for free on X for 48 hours.

It looks to me like yet another bit of media that's vaguely popular with the alt-right and absolutely no one else. Also the movie is banned in Germany.

Side note: "basedsploitation" is a silly term no one asked for. Also, looking at the Prime video top 10, the movie is not on the list at all, let alone number 1. I feel like the article is exaggerating the importance and popularity of the film.

I've seen a few astonishingly obviously botty comments (something like "no wonder people are going to see Citizen Vigilante", lol) and absolutely zero other mention, so yea, not hopeful. It's a shame about Hammer, he was good in the few roles I saw him in before he drove his career off a cliff.

    Warning. Spoilers

Citizen Vigilante is one of the worst movies I've ever fully watched.

The fact that people actually like this incoherent nonsense is just inconceivable to me.

It starts off with a rather spectacular bit of gratuitous violence. A dude with a kitchen knife kills a mother in front of her young child. For no apparent reason. Does the young boy grow up to be the vigilante? No. Does the killer ever face justice? No. Do you spend the rest of the movie waiting for some sort of tie back to the opening scene? Yes.

Then we learn about the vigilante. He is so angry at violent illegal immigrants, he kills them. And their families. And their lenient judges. And any police who get in his way. It's somehow OK though... because he is a rich American slum lord living illegally in Europe... So we have an illegal immigrant who is violently killing off other violent immigrants... does the movie ever explore this interesting paradox? Of course not.

Sometimes bad movies become cult classics. Cult movies don't set out to make a bad movie. The directors just end up making bad movies. Edward D. Wood Jr was famous for this. This movie seems more deliberately bad. Yet people seem to like it. Like there is some inside joke that I just don't get.

I haven't seen Citizen Vigilante, but how would you say it stacks up to Law Abiding Citizen? Sounds like some borrowing going on there.

Law Abiding Citizen is twice the movie Citizen Vigilante was, and I really didn't like Law Abiding Citizen.

saying indigenous people are just like these supernatural cannibals ones? The characters sure didn't react like it was typical.

Ive talked about Zahler as a filmmaker on here before.

I think engaging with right wing art is interesting, and I like the term basedspolitation as a term, which this article was the first I’ve ever seen it call it that.

Obviously there’s going to be people who are gonna shut it down and say it’s not worth talking about propaganda and trying to frame it in any other way is dangerous. Very tumblr way of thinking. But if you free yourself of that thought you’ll learn stuff like The White Lotus and TAR are worth engaging with despite their reactionary politics.

Hmmm.. I’m not sure if I like the statement “very tumblr way of thinking.”

I personally believe exposure to alt-right art can be dangerous, as even people who are against those beliefs are not immune to the effects of propaganda. It’s called the illusory truth effect and in a more nuanced way, the mere exposure effect

Also, I’m going to express an my opinion on something- I believe ego can be an Achilles heel for intelligent people. You ever wonder how smart people get into drugs? They might be used to critical thinking and believe they wouldn’t get sucked into addiction like everyone else would. Perhaps it might keep them a casual user for much longer than the average person. But do it enough times, you’ll most likely end up trapped like everyone else.

Same with cults. It never starts off with child raping in the name of the prophet who needs your money in order to take commands from god. It’s slow, frequent exposure with lovebombing and a welcoming community. Intelligent people are more likely to explore alternative living styles, they think that they found a secret that most people don’t know about and believe they have control of their own mind the entire time. Then suddenly, you’re in deep separated from your loved ones, out of money, and stuck. I’ve seen progressive people slowly slip into alt-right and it very much reminds me of that same cult psychology I’m talking about.

I like to be aware of how the alt right is thinking so I know how to meaningfully interact with them since unfortunately they are a part of my life, but I am very intentional on consuming the media only sometimes, I certainly don’t particularly want to interact with art that has potential to activate pathos. I refuse to believe I’m immune even though every fiber in my body rejects that ideology.

            “very tumblr way of thinking.”

It is though. As is your reply. It doesn’t have to be an offensive remark. But these opinions and thoughts are things that were common in Tumblr blogs throughout the 2010s and in some twitter spaces in 2018 onwards after the Tumblr exodus from the porn ban.

I do understand that a lot of the original users on this forum come from that school of thought. And I’ve been fortunate enough to argue against that way of thinking without getting banned or anything like that. But, I do think it is a thought process very of its time. I was a teenager when all that was happening, I had the same state of mind at some point, but I eventually moved on from that after finding people and spaces that had more interesting discussions about media stuff. Without having to condemn everything, and make moral judgements on someone simply watching something or writing about a phenomenon. As if writing a critical essay about films with certain political messaging, with a tongue in cheek term for it, is spreading propaganda instead of being viewed as an interesting discussion about art.

I think at the crux of that issue is people believing the only art worth engaging is that which politically aligns with you. So there’s things like Zahler’s films, which have very publicly been condemned as being alt-right propaganda. And until a few years ago, no one thought it was worth engaging with them seriously. Once they got over that, they saw movies that were technically well crafted with a lot of tension and were elevated version of its pulpy inspirations. Same can be said with Clint Eastwood movies, John Millius movies, a lot of movies from the early to mid 20th century. It does remind me a little bit of people saying they can’t watch anything made before 2010 because of how triggering it could potentially be for them.

Being so... you can’t watch them, you can’t talk about it, it’s better just to ignore it, and anything else means you’re with the enemies. I mean, that just doesn’t seem very cool.

I wish I’ve seen enough movies to thoughtfully engage with your point, but I don’t know any of the ones you listed. Not because I consider them “triggering,” but because my pop culture literacy is low, so I’ll try my best to reply but I might be missing the mark.

How I think about it is I wouldn’t want to watch a movie made by a pedophile director where the main character is a pedo and the point of the movie is to make the pedophile likeable even though he’s hurting children throughout the movie and we kind of brush that part under the table and they get a happy ending.

I wouldn’t mind watching a movie about the victim’s perspective, a movie where pedophiles are clearly the villain, a redemption arc where they sterilize themselves for the good of society…etc

I personally don’t mind consuming good media from artists who are bad people, sometimes really fucked up people make damn good art. What I care about is if the art is trying to convince me that I should be doing immoral things by using psychological tactics that have evidence backed ways to successfully change people’s mind.

I loved the first 2 seasons of White Lotus, 3rd didn't really do much for me.

Inbred Cannibal horror is basically a sub-genre and it typically focuses on isolated communities away far away from help.
