Midweek-ish Movie Free Talk
Have you watched any movies recently you want to discuss? Any films you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.

I was away on a family vacation for most of June. So I finally watches Obsession this weekend and wow!
I really enjoyed this film! As soon as the flip switches, there's a base level on uncomfortable-ness. A worry in the back of my head that something would happen. There were two standout scenes for me.
Second is the murder scene in the car. Even though we expect it to happen, it is still shocking. It made me jump and I saw Nikki running up in the background. It's so abrupt and violent. They show the aftermath to really keep us shocked.
I like that some elements of the story veer away from the traditional tropes.
I appreciate the end where Nikki returns and screams "What did you do!?!". She knows this isn't her fault, but is still traumatized by all of it.
I appreciate that all of this is really the MC's fault. He a bit of a coward and avoids owning up to his feelings and actions. That leads to making one bad choice after another. It just so happens that he comes across a tool that makes everything so much worse. Which makes for a good horror movie. Simple, everyday ideas that turn extreme for one reason or another.

Yeah one of the things I enjoyed most about Obsession was that it didn't over-do it in terms of jumpscares. The writers really knew how to get under your skin with various scenes and just make you as uncomfortable as possible.
The car murder scene is probably one of my favorite scenes in the movie because you entirely expect it to happen but you just don't know when it'll happen. It made my friends and I jump out of our seats.
I watched that last night and enjoyed it! The lead actress did a great job, I was very impressed by her performance.
I can't get over how the bad idea guys made a hit horror movie, I've been watching their skits for a while (this one always makes me giggle). Jordan Peel did it 10 years ago, but he had been on TV for awhile at that point. Besides, one sketch comedy actor turned horror filmmaker already felt like a lot.
Peele isn’t the only one
No way! How does the saying go? Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is a pattern? What is it about sketch comedy that translates to horror?

I didn't know about the director before this. But I love that more and more internet content creators are breaking through to Hollywood
I finally watched One Battle After Another and thought it was every bit as good as everyone was telling me it was. Benicio del Toro ruled, and I really didn't expect it to be as funny as it was.
Leo telling himself to focus and remember and then immediately taking a huge drag on his joint, incredible stuff.
I watched Tuner the other night. Is it a great movie? Not really. The beats are predictable... and we've seen this movie a dozen times. That said, it was enjoyable enough. The lead kid was great.
One thing I really don't like about music in film is when they've clearly recorded it in a studio but they're playing it in an open space with reflective surfaces. Get someone who is skilled to do it in that space and mic it up HEAT-style. Really takes me out of it.
I just saw The Death of Robin Hood.
If you appreciated the Wolverine movie, you could probably appreciate the post-mythological-consequence driven plot of the movie, except for Hugh Jackman's inability to keep a consistent accent between northern English and southern American. A note that is a minor plot point, but major concern with the film that undid the rest of my interest:
A particular scene in *The Death of Robin Hood
There is a scene that depicts the Pryoress masturbating in a cave that is quite obviously used for religious rituals both pagan and Christian in which she masturbates. This scene does not drive the plot in a meaningful way, and ultimately served to suspend my interest in underlying plots due to potential sexual undertones related to the story that ultimately never came to fruition. It was like Chekov's smoking gun in a sexual context with no related context that just made things weird for no reason.Forgiving the above scene which only matters for how out-of-context it was, it was an interesting examination in the life of an outlaw that definitely had external effects, and how one could navigate such a world that one had created or oneself.
We went to the theater last night to see the new Jackass movie. Surprisingly, my girlfriend suggested it, stating that she had never seen one in the theater. Well, we certainly didn't get the classic theater experience of a crowd to laugh along with. There were only two other people at a 7:15 showing.
I'm still glad we went. I saw the first couple movies in theaters so it was nostalgic for me, and I truly think this is gonna be the last one this time. Those guys are lookin pretty old.
The movie was decent. Lots of old footage, some we haven't seen and some we have, then a new stunt here and there and maybe even a heartfelt moment or two.
Most people I mentioned this to today had no idea there was even another movie, so I guess it's no surprise there was nobody there.
I rewatched the 2014 film The Signal for the first time since it was released (loved it the first time!) and while I still enjoyed it, there are large parts that felt like a music video, as well as nods to (mimicry of?) Zach Snyder, and video games and/or anime. I had forgotten the story for the most part and it was fun to watch. I stayed up too late finishing it and now I'm sleepy at work thinking about how Olive Cooke was asleep or in a stupor for the majority of her on-screen time lol
