I think this is also an attempt from the academy of making the oscars more appealing for general audiences since viewership and interest is going down, but I do like the oscars as it gives some mainstream appeal to less popular movies.

The social aspect of Black Panther was a BIG portion of why it got such praise IMO. I really didn't enjoy the fill all that much, personally. I thought it was boring, and the acting (for the most part) was sub par. But a lot of people loved it, and I feel like the Oscars are more of a popularity competition more than anything now. Of course there are the smaller titles that get recognized, but I still feel like it's a popularity list. I haven't watched the Oscars in like 6 years though.

Best movie and cinematographicly by far the most impressive production of 2018. Head and shoulders above the rest.

If it doesn't win best foreign movie, something's awfully wrong in the Academy, but then some things seem to be awfully wrong with the Academy.

As with any award, you need to properly define the criteria before judging the nominees. Do you believe that each film should be judged for its intrinsic artistic qualities, or by the impact it has on the industry and society? Should both be considered? There's no correct answer because there's no single way to define "Best Picture," regardless of how passionately you believe in your answer. But that shouldn't stop you from voicing your opinion—you should just understand that you're not trying to prove an objective truth about the award, but instead why people should judge films as you do.

For anyone who cares, here's my take: industry buzz/impact is an inherently dishonest way to judge a movie's merits. Publicity is manufactured as much as it is earned—not every film has an equal opportunity to share the limelight or to become a meme. What every movie does have the equal opportunity to do, however, is to be a movie. To convey ideas in a unique style that pushes the boundaries of what we understand storytelling in film to be. I believe movies should be judged against each other primarily in this manner, and could use impact/publicity as a "tie-breaker" when intrinsic artistic qualities cannot separate candidates.

If I was an Academy voter, I would have compared films like Black Panther, Vice and Bohemian Rhapsody to other titles like Death of Stalin, Hereditary, Eighth Grade, etc. And to be honest, I don't think they'd hold up in my opinion of what constitutes a Best Picture nominee.

Not that I expected it to be there or anything, but The Real Thing definitely could have deserved a nomination for best short.
