What have you been listening to this week?
What have you been listening to this week? You don't need to do a 6000 word review if you don't want to, but please write something! If you've just picked up some music, please update on that as well, we'd love to see your hauls :)
Feel free to give recs or discuss anything about each others' listening habits.

Ragana - you take nothing
Dawn rayd - to know the light
Mutoid man - mutants
I felt like I needed some variation from my usual playlist at work, so I've been listening to some early stuff from Porcupine Tree. They're probably my second favourite prog metal band after Haken.
Did you like Steve Wilson's solo stuff? I love both, personally. I saw him play in Calgary before the pandemic and it was an awesome show.
I haven't actually listened to any of his solo stuff yet. Thanks for the tip! :-)
Lucid Planet - Lucid Planet
I’ve been playing both of these band’s albums non stop this past year, but lately I’ve been listening more to the first album, the self titled. They’re both simply fantastic and I invite whoever is reading to give them a try. This band is 100% independent and as such has no label. I believe it’s for this reason that they don’t have many listeners, because their quality is way above their level of popularity. According to their website they describe themselves as a progressive psychedelic band however I can swear at some point the website said progressive psychedelic tribal metal. If that’s not what you usually enjoy I’d invite you to listen to their second album, simply called II, which I find quite accessible for everyone.
Elliot Smith - Either/Or
Not much to say here, great album. I’ve been getting into Elliot Smith’s music lately and this is the one I’ve listened to the most.
Indukti - Idmen
Another unknown album. I know nothing about these guys and I found out about this album only because Spotify kept recommending it to me. I didn’t like it much at first, but after listening a couple times it grew on me. It’s some kind of metal with middle eastern vibes. I dig it, but it’s not for everyone.
Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell!:
I listened to Born To Die, and it didn't grab me, so I ignored her until a couple of months ago. I really can't remember why I tried her music again, not why this was the first album I picked up. Maybe it's the enchanting album art. I'm amazed at how much thos album feels like she's killing me softly with her song. Really a masterwork, and I'm looking forward to hearing the albums I've missed. I also noticed that I assumed for a decade that her early work didn't resonate with me because I was out of touch with a younger generation. Now I know I'm only a year older than she is. Funny the background impressions we leave in place because they're insignificant.
Otherwise, Rachel's and Max Richter because of a lovely post on this site. Cheers everyone
My Last.fm collage for this week.
The Palms of Sorrowed Kings by Obsequiae.
Black Mass for a Mass Grave by Inquisition.
Those of my Blood by Blutschwur.
Disclosure by The HAARP Machine. (Literally can't find a link for them anywhere, Sumerian Records sucks lol)
Among some more Dungeon Synth and Black Metal that I can't remember.
last weekend I had a chance to attend Pickathon in Oregon, which is a phenomenal 4-day music festival for many many reasons, but primarily because they do a great job booking bands from all over the world, across many genres, who are generally flying a bit below the radar. So I've been listening to a lot of them.

A couple standouts:
Mononeon. He was Prince's last bass player, and Flea called him the "greatest fucking electric bass player". There are definitely some strong tasting notes of Prince & Bootsy Collins in his music, but at at the drop of a hat he could suddenly veer off into a jazz fusion odyssey.
Meridian Brothers. Supercool salsa beats from Columbia.
The Kernal. I sure love me some classic-sounding country that isn't jingoistic/racist. They were unbelievably good live.
A mention of the Muppet show on a different music thread reminded me how much I love One's on the Way by Loretta Lynn and most especially the version she performed on the Muppet Show. I love country music from that general era. Other classics I love include Boy Named Sue, Jolene, etc.

Edit, if English is not your first language you may want subtitles.
Aside from revisiting the songs from the Muppet show, many of which I love, much of what I have been discovering has been through ~music so thank you everyone.
The legendary classical label Hyperion finally released their catalogue for streaming a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been picking my way through that. There are some absolutely stunning recordings and legendary performances in there. Here are a few of my faves:
(Edit: now with info for each link!)

String Quintet, Op. 97 “American”

Could you provide artists/composers and titles for those of us who don't have Apple Classical?
I just got introduced to loqto, and they make insanely good tracks. "lo7.j-" is my favorite one so far!
loqto is amazing. I hope we hear more from them soon because it's been a few years.
I discovered Clarence Carter's music this week reading articles about William Friedkin. In one interview, Friedkin said he'd wanted to make an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" that ended with the song Strokin'. He did eventually use it in one of his later films, Killer Joe.

British post-punk at it's most interesting. Mark E Smith was bonkers.
Mostly Fela Kuti and specifically, the Gentleman and the Fela and Ginger Baker Live albums. It is great music to travel through the city.
Found this really amazing videogame music theory podcast: Super Marcato Bros. Really great selection of music they cover and I just have downloaded like 20 episodes to listen to after finding it.
I've been trying to find some more music that my wife and I both enjoy listening to. For this week the list seems to mostly be in the realm of Post-Hardcore to Alt Rock. The list for this week looks like:
Holding Absence Just found them this week, but I'm liking most of the songs I've listened to so far.
Too Close to Touch Highly recommend basically anything by them. It's been hard trying to find something to fill the void that is left behind.
FLOYA Also, just found them this week, but I am really enjoyed the 2 albums I've heard.
Catch Your Breath The closest thing I've found to fill the void that Too Close to Touch left.
Loveless Only listened to a couple songs so far, but so far so good.
If Not for Me Same as the above.
Vaines Everything Vaines puts out is solid. I saw him in concert with Emarosa a while back and love everything he has released. 10/10 highly recommend.
If anyone has any recommendations feel free to throw them at me and I'll give them a try.
One Line Short — “Yes Man” on Spotify
It’s been a ska sort of summer so far.
Tenhi - Valkama
Over ten years since their last release, the finnish dark folk group Tenhi released a new full length album.
It's a melancholic and beautiful story of life and death.
I feel I'm going to be listening it many times in the coming months as the days get darker up here north. The album name translates to "Harbour" or "Shelter" which I feel accurately depicts the mood I get from the music.

Listen to Haggar era Van Halen hits the other day for the first time in what feels like forever and I forgot how much I loved their style. Why Can't This Be Love, Right Now and Dreams are such fun, exciting and era defining sounds.
More recently, I love how The Midnight's newest album Heroes really captured what made Jump by VH so amazing.
Two albums:
Louis Cole - Quality Over Opinion
Weird hyper funk/pop with confusing chords from a dude with too much talent.
Forest Swords - Engravings
Kinda dark and moody, slow electronic stuff.
Was looking for some Italian music to put on while making a pasta dish with some candles lit. Found Mina, who is apparently the best selling Italian musical artist of all time. She was big in the 60s and early 70s, and her music sounds gorgeous even without knowing the meaning behind the words. I'm not good at genres or descriptions of music, I generally feel it as more relational to moods and things. Her music sounds like frollicing in the hills among flowers, and coming into town to drink and fall deeply into (and out of) love, and like it should be in a Tarantino movie and the good times and celebrations right before a war destroys your town, and Vegas at night without the seedy undertones, and walking around town in the rain having mutually broken up with the person of your dreams for ephemeral reasons.
Too song recommendations-- 1. Conversaziones 2. La banda 3. Se Telefonado 4. Citta vuota
Kenny Mason – Shell. It’s just a song, not an album, but I’ve actually had it on repeat for quite a while in the past two weeks or so.
I can see why JID chose to collaborate with him a few times in the recent year or so. Reminds me a bit of earlier Lil Wayne at some parts, but with an excellent instrumental.
Insightful story about his coming up in a harsh environment, with some clever rhyming and flowing (to me as a non mother tongue speaker, at least)
I hope I will get around to listening to the whole album soon.
Edit: What is the etiquette here on Tildes? Do I just link to Spotify/YouTube, my preferred service, or not at all?
Edit: an adjective
Just link to whatever's convenient for you. Or if you want to be really considerate, link to whatevers convenient for everyone and link every major service :p
Dunno if there are any Broadway fans around here, but was looking for a new musical to listen to and currently enjoying Parade (2023 Revival)
