Been reading a lot of Malazan BotF and while I love it, I'm looking for something breezier to read for a bit. Preferably something with under 5 PoV characters, 150-300 pages, a mostly linear plot and that doesn't take 100+ pages just to get my bearings on the world. If it's got humor or a bit of mystery too it, all the better.

Haha, I know some people think that way, which is why I don't mention it. But I don't smell (and I know you're thinking I do, just no one tells me, but I'm 100% sure that's not true) and it doesn't bother me really, plus I feel better conserving water. My girlfriend for example knows and she's OK with it. And the ball rash thing is like a 4-5 times a year, not a weekly thing.

If someone asks me in person I'd say 4-5 times per week. In reality it's probably closer to every 2-5 days. More in the summer, less in the winter. I've asked around a lot and I've (almost) never been told I smell, even if I get pretty sweaty. 5 days is pushing it, this is kinda gross but I've found my testicle area starts to hurt around day 5 of no shower, the hair gets all like matted with sweat and grime and it will feel like it's getting pulled when I walk and I'll develop a minor rash. Ideally I'd like to shower every 2-3 days, but I don't enjoy showering and it just feels like a time waste if I don't feel gross or smell gross.

Other than the ball thing my hair is usually what causes me to shower. It gets oily, I've found 1-2 days after showering it looks best, then it gets increasingly worse.

I work night shift too, and I feel like a happy medium would be pushing it back to 1 AM, and only shutting off half of the lights, or using significantly less powerful lights. On this street near me there's a stretch of road where about every other light pole is out and even with no houses there (which often have lights of their own) you can very comfortably see the whole way.

I love the night and darkness and it's annoying how well lit everything is. I could walk from my work to my house (2 miles) in the middle of the night and read a book perfectly fine the whole way there, which is totally unnecessary.

I've realized the amount of bands that I'd describe as "really liking them" despite only regularly listening to 3-6 of their songs is pretty high. While I have a fair number of bands that I like 10+ songs from, the vast majority of bands I'd recommend have a much smaller pool. I was just listening to LCD Soundsystem, a band I've loved for years, and I realized I only regularly listen to 4 of their songs (All My Friends, Daft Punk is Playing..., Dance Yrself Clean and New York I Love You...). TV on the Radio, another band I've really been trying to get people to listen to lately, I only like 6 of their songs. And with a lot of these bands it's not even that I just haven't listened to a lot of their music. TVotR I've listened to 3/5 albums all the way through, and while there were a lot of songs I maybe sorta enjoyed, only 6 of them were good enough that I actually saved them.

It gets harder for me because there are also a lot of bands out there that I like 3+ of their songs but wouldn't describe myself as a big fan. Eminem, for example, I have like 15 of his songs saved but I'd definitely say I like TV on the Radio more.

I feel like for me it's more about how much I like the songs rather than the quantity. Like on a scale of 1-10 where 1 is barely liking it and 10 is absolutely loving it (so entirely ignoring songs I don't like), Eminem has a lot of like 4-7s whereas all of the TVotR songs I like I'd rate as 9s or 10s.

So I feel like you're kinda unfairly conflating my point with a whole heap of either unrelated things or things I specifically didn't argue for. I'm not pro child labor or anti teaching about slavery and I specified not selling it or giving it away/ to kids. People die and get hurt from a million different things. Spending hours everyday sitting on the couch watching TV is probably just as bad if not worse than a lot of these canning practices for your health. I wouldn't promote doing that but I'm also not like "we need to stop people from being allowed to do that". It's their lives, and if that's the gamble they wanna take who am I to say they can't. Again, as long as it's for personal consumption. The harbor is safe but it's not what ships are built for, and all that.

This, like most food safety rules is very good advice on a society-wide scale, but also something I don't particularly find concerning on an individual scale. If something is safe say 99.8% of the time and you're doing it yourself you might end up sick a little less than once a year, and with the convenience or reduced waste of whatever that is, maybe it's worth it for you. But a restaurant serving 200 people a day is getting someone sick about every other day, and a food processing plant could potentially get hundreds or thousands of people ill.

Growing up my mom would get tomorrow's meat out right after dinner and thaw it for about 22 hours at room temperature. We would leave pizza sitting unrefrigerated for 2+ days and still eat it and I've eaten a lot of food out of dumpsters or off the floor in my life. And I'm sure it got me sick sometimes, but it's a risk I'm OK with. If you wanna can using untested methods go for it, but maybe don't sell or give it away, and probably keep it away from anyone under 8, over 65 or otherwise unwell.

I mean free climbing cliffs or cave diving is also stupid and dangerous to me but if that's what some people are into I really don't care. Risk tolerance is such a personal thing, I don't think it's something we should try and deal with at a personal level.

I mean I guess it doesn't have to make you feel like a badass. Makes you feel however you want to feel before some physical aggression where you may or may not die.

Yeah, I'd say anything where the majority of the ingredients are edible with no work in their own right, but also there's a minimal degree of prep or cooking work. Like take a ham and cheese sandwich, I'd say that's thrown together. But if you add some vegetables you have to cut up (say onion tomato and lettuce), and you toast it I'd now say that's more of a cooked meal. Or like a hotdog that you just microwave on a plain bun is thrown together but if you make some chilli to top on it and you grill the hotdogs instead I'd say that's cooked. A ramen packet is pre-made food but if you add a hardboiled egg, some chives, maybe throw in some cashews and canned bamboo shoots I'd call it thrown together. Hand make the noodles or use dried ramen instead of the packet noodles and use a homemade broth (plus earlier stuff) and now it's cooked.

Idk exactly the definition but along those lines.

I'd say about 60% of my meals are cooked, 30% is thrown together food, 8% is eating out and 2% is premade food. I mostly enjoy cooking but when I'm feeling lazy (which is fairly common) I'll just have like a bowl of cereal, sandwiches or some upscaled ramen. I usually eat out once a week (on rare occasions twice) and I almost never get premade meals.

By premade meals I mean like ramen bowls, cans of soup, Stoufers or Banquet meals, frozen pizzas, etc. Throwing something together is like a sandwich, cereal, a box of Mac and cheese/ hamburger helper or a ramen packet where you add a boiled egg, leftover pork and some chives, etc-- stuff where it's mostly finished food that just requires a little bit of work.

I wouldn't have dropped out of college probably. It's not like a huge regret but if I had stuck with it for 1 more year I could have graduated even if barely. I've been out now for 7 years and I did a lot of moving around and exploring and it's all been good, and there's a good chance I would have missed that all but in hindsight while it's been fun, it's also ended up with me just finally settling down and having to remake friends at 27, as I've moved pretty much every 1-2 years since 21, and never stuck around long enough to get situated.

If I would've graduated I could have moved once, started setting down ties and there's a good chance I would have bought a house that's half way paid off by now. Also while money isn't really important to me I had a good few years being well and truly broke (outside this year I've never made over $15 an hour) and I'm only making like 48k now. Most of my friends graduated making like 55k-75k right out of college

Was looking for some Italian music to put on while making a pasta dish with some candles lit. Found Mina, who is apparently the best selling Italian musical artist of all time. She was big in the 60s and early 70s, and her music sounds gorgeous even without knowing the meaning behind the words. I'm not good at genres or descriptions of music, I generally feel it as more relational to moods and things. Her music sounds like frollicing in the hills among flowers, and coming into town to drink and fall deeply into (and out of) love, and like it should be in a Tarantino movie and the good times and celebrations right before a war destroys your town, and Vegas at night without the seedy undertones, and walking around town in the rain having mutually broken up with the person of your dreams for ephemeral reasons.

Too song recommendations-- 1. Conversaziones 2. La banda 3. Se Telefonado 4. Citta vuota

Just picked up Disco Elysium and Mount and Blade Bannerlord for ps5. Put about 8 hours into DE and 15 hours into Bannerlord in the last week which is the most time I've spent gaming in months.

Elysium surprised me by how interesting it is. Very impressed by how many dialogue option there are without devolving into just repetitiveness. I spent a while getting a ham sandwich from a guy and convincing my partner to share it with and hearing about weird race science shit and it didn't seem to affect the story at all but it still was fun (and funny). I like the politics baked into the game, and the overarching nilhistic feeling. Would give it a solid 8.5/10 so far. I consider it more if like an interactive novel however than a "game" but if youre into that definitely give it a try.

Bannerlord is so close to exactly what I want it a game, my big complaint though is a lot of it is wide as lake but shallow as a pond. Dialogue options are very repetitive and while there is tons you can do and dozens of locations and factions, in the end there's only like 3-4 ways you can interact with each. Still a lot of fun, but I think a little tweaking and it could be the type of game I put a thousand hours into instead of maybe 50-100.

I don't mind chopping up an onion or two, I just don't wanna spend more than 4-5 minutes on prep. Stir fried rice is great but I almost never have left over rice, and my rice cooker takes like 15-20 minutes to make it and it doesn't work as well with fresh rice. The tomato egg sounds interesting, I'm assuming it comes out almost like an omlette?

I do sometimes make like... Almost a chicken Tikka masala (but vegetarian with cashews instead of chicken). Throw a can of tomato sauce, some Greek yogurt cashews and onion together, add the cashews and spices (I have a homemade blend), let it simmer until the rice is done. I then just throw the sauce directly into the rice cooker with some cling wrap over it and stick that into my fridge if I'm being extra lazy with the leftovers.
