Our household is solidly in the "hope SZA wins all 9 of her nominations" camp. I think Kill Bill was a great album and was an actual album that you could listen through as an album which is rare these days. It really showcased her talent.
Just to note (because I did the double take I do every year) that the grammys still differentiate 'Record of the Year' and 'Song of the Year' but both reference songs - I believe 'Record of the Year' used to refer to the single, considering the A side and B side - I don't know what separates them now.
So here the song is Kill Bill, but the album is SOS - which is what folks here should go listen to, because I totally agree! SZA stands well above most of her contemporaries in these nominations, imo.
Edit: quick google says
Oooh great point. I couldn't actually recall the name of the album and just assumed that what was written under album of the year would be right. I stand by it being a great album though.
I was wondering what the difference war between record and song
As an older person who doesn't listen to radio much (and love 1908's 90's music ), i recognise only a handful of the nominations (Taylor Swift is obviously doing something right...).
That's also a boatload of the categories.
When was Spoken word poetry a thing? (i thought Rap was basically spoken word....imho)
I like african music (im mainly a jpop/kpop fan these days) as there seems to be a few fans at work who has extensive playlists with african music....but may i ask why there is no asian category? (genuine question)
I'm glad I wasn't the only one with more questions than answers when scrolling through!
Pretty funny how boygenius is apparently rock, there's only 1 metal category, yet so many other super specific categories. I feel very out of touch lol
Ask anyone in the metal community about their opinion about the Grammy awards and you will probably find out that they don't like it for that reason or that they find the Grammy awards a joke because of the following reasons. Mostly because the people behind the awards have no idea what their categories are supposed to have or encase, case in point boygenius (indie) and Metallica (thrash metal) are both in the rock categories, along with the Foo Fighters, which is one of the few bands that make actual sense for those categories. Or, more likely, the people behind the awards genuinely don't care enough of these categories in the first place. Mostly because this is not the first time that did this to both the rock and metal categories, they have a long history of mis-matching artists for the rock and metal categories. Kind of hard to care about a award that keeps doing that.
Also, if you look at the other awards for music around the world, there are categories for foreign musicians and bands. So why does the Grammy awards refuse to have a industry standard?
Boygenius is definitely rock, they're an indie rock group. They have moments of folk/acoustic-rock, but I don't think they're out of place in that category.
I guess I don't know much about music then. They just have a too soft sound for my understand of rock - something like Kiss, Led Zeppelin, etc.
For sure softer - Kiss and Led Zeppelin are usually considered 'Hard Rock'.
Funnily enough scrolling through all the categories made me feel young - the grammys have collected a large number of award types over the years where some are becoming less and less relevant/confusing, it could use a cull/modernizing.
It's maybe worth noting that 'Best African Performance' is essentially an Afrobeat award. J-pop/K-pop have a style, but don't typically have traditional east asian influences (in the same way Afrobeat does), so are less defined from the other pop awards. Point being, it's less about the continent and more about the genre. There's a million oddities to the grammy's categories, you could probably argue all day about what should/shouldn't be included, but I think that's their reasoning.
Rap and Spoken Word sometimes cross paths, but are otherwise pretty distinct. 'Flow' is pretty important to MCing, but not necessary in spoken word. You wouldn't want to judge a Hip Hop track in the same category as something like this, for example.
I was reading the post from when Styles won Album of the Year earlier this year and the top comment linked to an article explaining the win. Harry's House was the only album with a nomination in the category "Best Engineered Album." The only Best Album nominee with a nomination in that category is The Record by Boygenius (I have no idea who they are tbh). So, I suppose, that has a good chance at winning.
Boygenius is a supergroup made up of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. Basically, female-fronted indie-folk/indie-rock. I fucking love this album (though I may be partial to their first). They are all phenomenal musicians (Julien Baker's Sprained Ankle is such an underrated album imo) and together the three of them really just click.
Oh. I guess that puts Healy's joke about them into perspective, that's the only reference I knew about them (and if I'm being honest the only member I know is Bridgers).
what a... strange reddit thread
Yeah that subreddit is quite the opposite from this place. But I'm a fan of that sense of humor and I think Healy's pretty funny.
That guy revels in being controversial. I wouldn't take anything he says seriously nor even listen to what comes out of his mouth in the first place
To quote his song Love It If We Made It
I used to be like that too when I was like 14 but this man is 34 years old. He really grosses me out and I know I'm not alone in that
I'm only invested in the Dance Music/Electronic Recording competition and think Skrillex, Fred Again.. and Flowdan or Aphex Twin can have it. I want Aphex to win, but if Skrillex takes the win with "Rumble" I'd call it fair enough.
