What have you been listening to this week?
What have you been listening to this week? You don't need to do a 6000 word review if you don't want to, but please write something! If you've just picked up some music, please update on that as well, we'd love to see your hauls :)
Feel free to give recs or discuss anything about each others' listening habits.
You can make a chart if you use last.fm:

Remember that linking directly to your image will update with your future listening, make sure to reupload to somewhere like imgur if you'd like it to remain what you have at the time of posting.
I got so excited back when I listened to that, but what isn't part of that sell is that they sound like those things...mixed with slick clean Imagine Dragons shit. It's irritating to me.
Their album Devil Is Fine still has a bit of that going on, but if anyone looking is turned off by Stranger Fruit but still likes the idea...maybe give that one a shot. It's significantly better imo.
Saw them live a couplr months ago, cool band.
I gave them a listen, because I will see them in the summer at a festival. So excited!
From the little bit I just listened to I am intrigued! I'm gonna have to sit down and listen to the whole album today I think!
Quick update. It's gospel by way of black metal and I love it.
Very cool sound. Thanks for sharing.
Just making a shameless plug here. If any of you use Spotify, I created a web app to show you your top 25 songs: https://spotitude.me/
I enjoy reading threads like these and those who make visualizations of what they listen to, so I made an app to do that.
Never thought I would see someone mention Lifafa on here :p
Also here's a live performance by them.
Have you checked their other project, Peter Cat Recording Co.?
Back from the Fire by Gold Brother
It's a soundtrack on something on Netflix. Liked it enough that I tracked it down. I really enjoy this type of "Heavy Blues" (that's what I call it, dunno if there is a better genre name).
If you like that, look at some of the stuff from the Black Keys and the sound track from Black Snake Moan, especially the songs by Samuel L. Jackson. Love that stuff.
A strange mix! (but, judging by the play count, not a whole lot)
My queue of new music got me through a couple of interesting artists this week.
OSI (progressive metal) was an interesting one, mainly because I haven't gotten through much of the genre before. I enjoyed it a lot, and I'll certainly be looking for some similar artists in the future.
Local Natives - Dark Days is another one I enjoyed quite a bit. I guess I'd call it Dream Pop, but I find the style of it very relaxing regardless of what you might call it. I'll have to peruse their discography a bit more.
I also started listening to JR JR's new album, Invocations/Conversations, but haven't gotten all the way through. I've really enjoyed their past work, and I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of this. First half was very promising!
my chart for this week [NSFW album art]
I need to stop listening to so much Death Grips, but like...it makes the time go by so fast.
Also, I listened to that DJ Khaled album for a review. I did not enjoy it.
+1 for Black Dahlia. I'm checking out Death grips right now and I'm kinda confused ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Based on your BDM comment, I would recommend getting into Death Grips by starting with Bottomless Pit; it's the most "metal" sounding album in their discography and the one I usually recommend to metalheads.
Cool, thanks. This is wild that's all I can really say at this point.
Check out city morgue if you like death grips.
I recently discovered the Drive-By Truckers and listened to their 2001 album Southern Rock Opera. Great if you like southern rock, country, or alt-rock. Most of the songs are lyrically dense and talk on recent southern history (specifically Alabama), politics, racism, and most of all, Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I haven't. I'll have to check them out
Trampled by Turtles is close to Drive-by Truckers yeah so good recommendation but if you like more bluegrass less country/pop check out The Infamous Stringdusters they are amazing. Pretty sure the two bands have toured together or at least been on the same stage together at one point.
Run the Jewels, Tyler the creator, some a$ap Rocky, k flay
Gunship, kavinsky, griz, lorn, chet faker, glass animals, phantogram, purity ring, odesza, Allison wonderland
Thrice, highly suspect, cage the elephant
Looking forward to RTJ4? Supposed to get it around the holidays I'm predicting November sometime like RTJ3 :)
Kishi Bashi’s new album Omoiyari!
That, and the Postal Service now that I have it in vinyl :D
Nice! I have listened through the new Kishi Bashi album a handful of times since it came out. What song do you like the most from it? My favorite so far was Annie, Heart Thief of the Sea. It just sounds so warm to me.
Annie is a hard one to beat :). I love the intro from Penny Rabbit and Summer Bear as well, but Summer of '42 may be my favorite over all
I've been listening to Spotify's Sludge and Doom play list a lot lately! I found the band Kylesa through it which is sort of a heavily distorted, psychedelic rock, metal type deal and I am thoroughly enjoying them.
Check out Cult of Luna https://youtu.be/_GmP0M3kBzM
Bit heavier than kylesa (thanks for that introduction BTW), but I think it may be in the same vein.
Oh nice! I like it! That's going on the rotation! Thanks!
I'm pretty new to the genre too! Dopelord is pretty rad on the stoner end of the spectrum. I LOVE Author and Punisher who's more on the industrial electronic music end of the spectrum. (he makes his own instruments so he can get an authentic super heavy grindy sound which is pretty cool)
I have been on a heavy vulfpeck kick lately. They have been my favorite band for the past 3-4 years it seems and I finally get to see them in concert next month! There was a site posted earlier this week that listed the top 25 songs on Spotify for the past 2 weeks(?) and 17 of them were Vulfpeck songs. What really got me excited for the concert was the a livestream recording of their concert in Brussels:
https://youtu.be/dDL5k9LpZ9w?t=11
Vulfpeck to me is just one of the only bands where I can listen to any of their songs and just start tapping my feet and rocking my head. When my significant other listens to them she always ask who they are because they cover so many different sounds with funk.
I'm curious on what will be performed at the concert I am going since they released their latest album. It seems that they play songs from all their albums at shows so I hope I get a little bit of everything!
I like Vulfpeck a lot. Have you checked out some of the other associated groups and/or solo stuff from some of the people in it too? (The Fearless Flyers, Cory Wong, Theo Katzman, etc.)
I have! But probably not as much as I should. I have really been digging The Fearless Flyers Simon F15. I also seem to get recommended a lot of Scary Pockets but I find their stuff a bit hit or miss for my tastes.
Was introduced to Raleigh Ritchie via Song Exploder podcast, have been listening to it on repeat on my train ride to work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VB30oo2YYf4
I feel like an ancient old lady trying to talk about what the kids are into, but I think I've started listening to SoundCloud rappers?
I've been feeling kinda down and listening to a lot of lofi hiphop (to set the mood here) when I came across 6 Dogs, some kind of mumbley teenage rapper. But it's so chill, I like that everyone takes a relaxed approach to the rapping, I like that it's all quite depressing.
A few of my favourites from the playlist I've put together:
Drifting - Pretty Pacc, 6 Dogs
Off The Gas - 6 Dogs, Lil Skies
i wrote this song 4 u - Lil Bo Weep
hammer - nothing,nowhere
Falling Down - Lil Peep, XXXTENTACION
Edit: Here's the playlist if you want to give it a go:

A bit of Avicii's new album, and a bit of assorted rock/alt songs I discovered over the week. A bonus was discover Janglin by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes after a solid few months of it rambling in my head.
I discovered arai tasuku. So that.
I've been listening to that new Dog Blood EP, Turn Off the Lights. Gotta say, I'm a pretty big fan of it so far.
I recently got into LCD Soundsystem. I honestly don’t know why I avoided these guys for so long, this is exactly the kind of music I love. I have had Electric Lady Sessions on repeat the last few days.
As well as that, Jai Paul’s new single ‘Do You Love Her Now / He’ is an absolute cracker. I’m not normally one to go for these comparisons, but it really does remind me of a kind of Prince / Tame Impala / D’Angelo hybrid; ie. absolutely sick
