Joe Kent, one of the United States’ top counterterrorism officials, announced his resignation on Tuesday, citing his opposition to the Iran war and what he said was Israel’s influence over the Trump administration’s policies.

“I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran,” Mr. Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, wrote in a social media post. “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”

His resignation letter is linked in full.

I think we knew Iran wasn't a threat but it's nice to have confirmation that isn't just my gut from having done this whole war in the Middle East thing before.

To be clear, I don't know much about Kent. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he is both an anti-semite and a nut job. However, it's disappointing that the NYT did not pull quotes from high profile Republicans like Marco Rubio or Mike Johnson, or mention the fact that both of them said Israel pulled the US into the war two weeks ago! I don't know, that feels like it might be important context.

The administration's claim that Israel pulled the US into the war isn't very believable. They spent weeks moving military assets into the region, including sending a second carrier at full speed, and then operations start just as the second carrier arrives. Israel may have kickstarted the war, but the US wasn't some bystander.

One of Trump's main habits is to never take responsibility for anything and most of his cabinet has the same habit. So blaming Israel is on brand and Kent's resignation can be seen as a Trump strategy to avoid responsibility.

Yet another reason why he is the worst possible leader. Whatever happened to "the buck stops here"? Instead it's "I take credit if something good happens, including for things I just made up", and "It's someone else's fault if something bad happens, including for things I just made up".

I'm not aware of Trump's latest position on the war, but in the aftermath of the Rubio-Johnson Israel comments he said something to the effect of: "If anything, I pulled them into this war." Not that it makes a difference on your wider point though. Sooner or later, he'll go back to blaming people if he hasn't already.

There is one issue that keeps showing itself in Trump's decisions: He's the worst possible leader.
One of the main problems with him is that he has conflicts of interests and is easily compromised, and has been compromised. There are many believable rumors that foreign countries, including Russia and Israel, have blackmail material on him. Without need for any rumors, it's well known that for decades he has many financial ties with other countries who have different goals than the Unites States.
Under normal circumstances he would never be allowed access to any kind of private or military information, and yet this mentally ill and highly compromised individual is making decisions that affect global economy and peace.

So there's a very powerful Israel lobby as noted in the article, but even without that anyone with some compromising pictures or some money can cause Trump to do horrible things. And the Republican congress and Republican Supreme Court mostly just watch or cheer it on.

Does make you wonder what's causing so many of them to still go along with this. On one hand, the threat of getting replaced in the next election cycle with a maga head seems real considering how much of the broader public refuses to believe trump capable of any wrong. On the other hand, how many of them are also compromised either through dirt or bribes?

It does feel like more of them would be looking around at their colleagues and saying "guys I think we've lost the plot what is going on here," rather than just towing the insanity line.

There's also a great fear of retribution, I think. "Petty revenge at all costs" is a very driving character trait of Trump, and everybody sees it.

Biden was so aware of this that he felt the need to blanket pardon his whole family to protect them from Trump.

Everybody knows (even those that won't admit it) that he's fully weaponized ICE and the DOJ to go after his enemies.

All of which makes the capitulation all the more infuriating, to be honest.

While I'm not convinced that we're there yet, I did see a video of a woman interviewed at a gas station in a deep red state where she said:

"Yes I voted for him three times and yes, I regret it completely. He's a lying idiot and I must be stupid or something for putting him in the White House."

Honestly I think the last one is probably the most likely for the bulk (not to say that any of them being pedos or threatened is impossible, but I doubt it's true of the majority). Which honestly is kind of the most depressing one too. Partly because it also includes their apparent apathy to pushing for justice against actual predators by going along with everything.

Absolutely. Out of sight out of mind, not in my backyard, not my kids not my problem - an abdication of all responsibility.
