What did you do this week (and weekend)?
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their week. Did you accomplish any goals? Suffer a failure? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
I was talking to my brother and said something to the effect of "If I ever got the chance to see Interstellar or 2001: A Space Odyssey in IMAX I would go immediately"
He mentioned he'd seen that Interstellar was playing, and I found two seats for a 10:10PM showing.
I hadn't seen more than a third of the movie and figured it would be a great way to experience it. It knocked my socks off. A thing that both movies do, that I love, is how they build and release, and use the silence of space, it just really works for me. I wound up tearing up through the entire launch/initial voyage because of how well it was done, nothing short of overwhelming. And it's just such a good movie otherwise, as well. I sorta built it up in my head, but it surpassed my expectationss.
I'm such a big fan of movie theatres showing heavy hitters occasionally. Especially in IMAX or super screen when you wouldn't get the same experience at home.
Interstellar would have been wild on the huge screen! Great buy, I'm glad you got to see it!
I have a fond memory of going to see Avatar in IMAX when it came out and thinking "shit this is the only time I'm gonna see this" and it was awesome. Definitely keeping an eye on the local cinema to see what's on!
Went to visit my tilderoni friend in the Netherlands last week ^^
Had to layer up quite a bit as we were really unlucky with wind and rain, but we had some great roadtrips, good foods, and a lot of series and movies indoors. A couple pics:
Copenhagen to Amsterdam flight was so beautiful. Less than an additional €10 for a window seat which was so worth it as it's been half a decade since I went flying the last time, so I was glued to the window lol
Wilhelmshaven Marinemuseum - the only other day we had good weather
On one of the Waddenzee islands - we did a 14 km bicycle ride here too which was a lot for me, and for once I'm actually kinda proud of myself!
Lighthouse on Marken - also had the best fish and chips of my life in the town there. Highly recommend De Visscher!
Going back home from Schiphol - we were sat waiting for my plane and people watching basically. I saw some people about 50 meters away and said "wow, those guys have a ton of luggage, they must be a band". And then I saw that they are Epica, one of my favourite bands of all time. They had clearly just returned from touring and I couldn't believe my eyes!! Walked up to them and wanted to say I'm a huge fan, that I've listened to them for half my life, and that they had a profound impact on my youth. They were right there!!! I was literally right next to them, buuut I was so starstruck that I just completely froze, staring at them as they walked past and up an escalator (they didn't look at me though, thankfully, because I probably looked like an idiot). Such a missed opportunity, like I'm still in disbelief that this happened lol, I mean I've fantasized so many times about just walking into exactly them (and other celebrities) on the street. At least I met them once at a meet and greet once before at a concert at a festival, but still.. fuuuuck
That first pic is beautiful, that beach looks windy AF, and that lighthouse is super cute. :P
As for being starstruck and missing your opportunity at the airport, you could still try reaching out to the band on twitter or something and telling them what you wanted to say to them. From what I've heard other bands say during podcasts and such, almost all of them treasure the moments when fans reach out to tell them how much their music has made an impact in their lives.
They're one of the biggest band in their genre (Nightwish is the only one above them I think) so I really doubt they read DM's. But yeah, perhaps there will be a next time - probably not a random meeting though lol, but at a concert or something.
Oh, nice, I will have to check them out then, since I love Nightwish. Well, loved. I listened to them a lot back when Tarja Turunen was singing, but I haven't actually listened to much of their new stuff since she left.
The band members themselves may not read the DMs, but someone on their team probably does, and will hopefully pass on any that they feel are worth sharing with the band. If you have a heartfelt message for them, I'm sure it will get through to them eventually. But if you're likely to have another opportunity to meet them in person, probably best to save it for then, I guess. :P
I shot two of them a message - their singer has more followers than the band page lol but these two, the drummer and keyboard player, have only 20k so maybe they do read messages. Will see how it goes!
They have like 10 hours of music to get throug so let me leave you with some song suggestions! One from each album:
Illusive Consensus
Mother of Light
Fools of Damnation
Burn to a Cinder
Avalanche
Chemical Insomnia
The Holographic Principle
Decoded Poetry
Omega
Sweet... hopefully they see it. And thanks for the recommendations! I'll check them out when I play some more POE tomorrow, since I usually listen to music while playing, and operatic/symphonic metal will suit it perfectly. :P
Oh my.. the Wadden are just the bee's knees. One of those midweek trips I just need every year. Even out of season those places are so tranquil.
Flying tonight. Nearly everything is packed, so I'm catching up on maintenance chores. Apparently I'm missing icy weather by a day, so that's nice.
Last week I had a great time showing a Tildes companero some architectural highlights of my city here in the US.
I replaced the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder on my 2000 Impreza rs. Overall an easy job, the old setup was leaking somewhere and there was so much air in it that I didn’t have anything in the clutch pedal, so the car was inoperative while I waited for parts. But it only took like 30 minutes to fix even with bleeding the new setup.
Well I got that fixed and then on the way home from the Timberwolves game last night, I got a flat tire right on the freeway and had to pay $260 for a tow home. If I made it to the next exit I could have just lyfted home and came back the next day with my other wheels/tires, but alas. I got it towed home and put my other wheels on it, but now I have to figure out winter tires (one of my winters went flat and the whole set is apparently slow leaking, I suspect the wheels themselves are bad and not the tires, but I’ll have to leak test).
For now, I’m just gonna watch basketball and play video games, but I have this next week off from work, so I’ll just be checking FB marketplace for more wheels/tires and maybe I’ll luck out with winters. 5x100 wheels are thankfully pretty common.
To be honest, nothing relevant. It was my.second week at new job and together with some things I've got lots of small tasks disrupting my brain focus, some of them are done, some of them wait for the next week. But most important things aren't done. I have to get some furniture to my place cause together with parents and brother we decided to spend Christmas in my place. I'm happy + I'm happy I finally have motivation to make my place more hospitable and useful by buying a table, chairs, bed (two years of sleeping on mattress :P) and so on.
Tomorrow in just before the morning I want to be in a forest, hopefully seeing some deers and drinking good coffee, I've recently started roasting coffee and got pretty excited about it :P
Coffee is the best :)
And I get the feeling of finally being able to host people. I hope your Christmas goes well!
Thank you. As a social animal I really want to host people, especially that I live here alone, so it may be big boost to my happiness.
I think I lost my job? Our team has been made redundant last week due to a recent buyout, and the contract company is putting us on paid pause while they figure things out. This was previously until Friday, but is now stretching into "further notice," so I don't don't know what to think anymore.
Good luck! Sorry to hear.
I got out all the stuff I needed to replace the LED backlight in my TV...and realized that I was missing a suction cup for lifting out the panel glass. I was either sent one too few or lost one despite colocating supplies earlier this week.
Back to watching things with half the screen too dim to see, at least until the new suction cup arrives. Worse things have happened, but that was supposed to be my physical project for the weekend!
