Happy new year!

In PST I’m a little late but here it is. What’s up? Any resolutions?

Congratulations! We also bought a new house and although we did hire painters, I've replaced the cameras, been replacing light fixtures, and added a light switch that gives a 2 way function without wiring. I did intend to paint but there was just so much going on, so I only did the kitchen island. We also want to replace the primary bath vanity -- PO liked chrome, we don't, plus it's deteriorating in that horrible flaky way. I've done a modest amount of plumbing at the previous home so apart from getting large men to bring in and carry out a 72" vanity, I may be able to do the actual install.

I think I'm trying to set intentions for the year without a goal that my failure to reach will result in my spiraling or that I forget about immediately until some later moment when I spiral.

The goal is no spiraling I suppose.

The YT algorithm has been feeding me influencers (I know, I know) talking about avoiding concrete goal setting for this reason. I feel it; I try avoiding telling people what my long term “goals” are because I just don’t have a great track record of achieving them. Which isn’t to say I’m not moving forward in another way! Just, feels a little bad…

Working on avoiding spiraling is absolutely somewhere on my priorities list this year though, I hope the coming year sees you well!

Fwiw it's pretty good practice to move away from them from a mental health lens. My opposition to doing resolutions is partially personal and partially professional. They're just not helpful for most folks. (Only like a ten percent completion rate )

But I think conscious and intentional goal setting can be helpful, just not once a year with all the optimism of "this time is different". Small incremental steps, practical ones rather than shooting for the moon, revisiting them intentionally.

For a similar reason as you, I've avoided hard goal setting for a number of years now, and i think it's really benefited my mental wellbeing. Not just ny resolutions, but in general.

I found when I set myself a concrete aim, I tend to overdo myself initially, burn out, and then either fail or hard-stop the moment i reached the goal. Neither result ever felt sustainable, so I've switched gears toward focusing more on the journey. Telling myself I'm going to try X and see where it goes feels so much more approachable and sustainable of a mindset for me. I like your framing of this as intentions.

But I have a complimentary first lesson at a muay thai gym on Saturday; the gym seems very well regarded when it comes to beginner friendliness. I’m a 4’10” woman who is blind without glasses. We’ll see how that goes?

edit 2 days after: Went to the gym, felt very welcome even if my poor body needs a LOT of work in both the cardio and strength department. Excited to go back!

Read books. I used to be an avid reader and just sorta stopped at some point, but get constant recommendations from my very-similar-in-taste brother (fantasy/sci-fi nerd). I got a head start on my current vacation to visit family going back through some books I've read (Dragonlance, got the whole series on Humble Bundle so it's been a good bit of nostalgia to start Dragons of Autumn Twilight, wanna hit the main sequence then side books). I'm also outfitting my bed with a gooseneck I can use to read on so I don't have to slouch that can hold my tablet so I can read more easily, and a cheap $8 page turner thing so I can just chill, hit a button, and turn the page (sounds silly, but I'm serious about this, but can't get comfortable holding a book, phone, tablet).

Happy new year to all of you. I haven't set any goals or plans. I think I am just looking forward to graduate this summer. Wish you people all the best and take care of yourselves!

Happy New year! Another 'no specific goals' answer.

But, I've been reflecting on the past year and have been wondering if my approach to let myself do-nothing in my spare time has maybe run its course.

On one hand, it's been really good for me to balance out the high stress I was experiencing in 24 and early 25. I also had some fairly stressful times at work last year I needed to recover from. Additionally, I think I've played good supporting role in helping my partner reach a goal; I'm so proud of them and that feels good.

On the other hand, I have barely any highlights from my year, it was very boring. On that note, I think I may like to participate in more actual activities this year. I'm not really sure what yet, maybe more social outings, maybe something educational/training, maybe more outdoors/fitness activites. I've taken a couple first steps already, though (if I include late last year), and otherwise I'm just going to be open-minded to opportunities.
