I've been feeling dissatisfied with the mainstream social media I've been using (reddit & twitter) so I was going to try using some alternatives more this weekend.

Which leads me to this question, I feel stupid for asking, but could someone describe where the button for making a new topic on this site is? I can't find it.

Character 3 of my latest Cataclysm playthroughs died to a hail of .50 bullets out of a surprisingly long-ranged anti-materiel turret. -_- Not sure if I want to start another one yet. Seen the words "magic" and "casts" in the recent changelogs; maybe worth it to wait a few dozen builds?

Kinda slowly getting back to working on my own projects. Came up with a cool scene for the fanfic series (yes, I am actually writing fanfics for a change), and slowly working on proof-of-concept interactions for the web games.

Imagine waking up in an evac shelter and being surrounded by zombies.

You know something's happened 'cause you all have been huddled into the shelter – but you didn't realize it's quite something like this.

You decide that, while shelter is safe, it has no food and no access to water. To get those, you venture outside. With barely anything behind you, and few survival skills to speak of, you go outside.

Maybe some houses are left open, so you can scout those – if the zombies haven't bashed everything into splinters. Maybe you happened to find a hairpin and, having some skills with picking locks, you can even get into places that were closed, so you can loot the untouched, wholesome supplies – that is, until the zombies smell you and follow you inside, breaking windows in the process.

You can't carry much without a bag of any sort, and even a regular backpack proves cumbersome when what you have to do is bash dead people's heads in with a crowbar, just so they don't kill you. But you have to, 'cause you can live on that edge of the city: there's zombies everywhere, and there's apparently a whole horde of them bouncing from one part of the city to another.

Maybe you got lucky and there was an LMOE shelter somewhere around the round you took to the city on your first day. That would mean that you have a safe, if chilly, place to stay for a while in, with access to water. Maybe you didn't, and as far as you're concerned, you can either find shelter in one of those houses or go back to the evac one, which is a few hours back the same way. Maybe you can sleep in the basement of some of those houses? Sure, unless the giant spiders have already webbed the whole place. Those bastards will fight to save their egg nests.

But maybe you got lucky, and you found enough food, water, and distance from the horde that you could rest for the night. You're tired, you got wounds that you're going to tear up your tank top to bandage, and maybe you aren't infected by whatever took over zombies, but that bite mark doesn't look healthy. You've just murdered a dozen people just to stay alive – dead people, sure, but they still looked like they're alive, if seriously confused – and there's seemingly an endless stream of them down the road – any road.

But you can't stay here, 'cause the food's running out, no matter how carefully you ration it. So you walk for hours, down roads with stray zombies, infected animals, giant wasps, and things that aren't even remotely from Earth, all seeking to act on whatever instinct prompts them to attack you. And maybe you find a refugee camp eventually, where people are in relative safety, even though they had to barricade a whole room away 'cause there's a handful of zombies there. But maybe not, and the bandits ambush you and fill your torso with lead, and maybe you'd still be conscious enough to witness how, when you're incapacitated and unable to move, the bastards that ambushed you come closer, and one of them points his heavily-used revolver to your head and pulls the trigger.

And then you wake up again, as another character, probably with a different set of skills and traits, and maybe you can even into a different personal start to the whole mess where, maybe, you can stay better off, until eventually you learn how to manage your supplies, and which areas are safe to traverse, and what things to look out for... But six people with firearms – or one anti-materiel turret – are still stronger when faced head-on, so you have to be careful.

        That would be Cataclysm.

You can download the latest release here. You might also want the unofficial launcher, which makes managing new releases and mods fairly-straightforward.

Is what you do with Ansible out there somewhere? Or can you describe it a bit? With my config I use make, a bunch of shell scripts and a python script to get rather repeatable installations. I've never really grokked what Ansible, Chef, Puppet etc. can do for me when reinstalling my system. And because I'm keen that it'll take some while until I'll be able to get going with GuixSD, I may as well put in the effort to make my Debian setup more easily "reproducible" (tho not in the sense that Guix or Nix use the term).

Glad that the car's going again! And TIL about voxels, so thanks for that!

I'm using Saltstack for Tildes (both the production server and dev versions), and I had to learn it from scratch because I had never really used anything similar in any depth before. Probably the best way I can explain it is to say that it lets you define a "state" for aspects of the machine(s), and it will get them into that state. Salt knows how to do a lot of common tasks, but sometimes you have to define a lot of the steps.

For example, here's a commit I added the other day - it uses the file.managed state to basically say "I want control of this file", for the file /etc/logrotate.d/nginx, and then I've stored a full file in Salt that it will place under that filename. Every time Salt runs, it checks whether /etc/logrotate.d/nginx is the same as that file, and if it's not, it will replace it with the version in Salt.

This file is another decent example - it checks if the file /usr/local/lib/libcmark-gfm.so doesn't exist (the commonmark library I'm using), and if that file isn't there it will:

        1. download a cmark-gfm release from a GitHub releases url
        2. verify its SHA256
        3. extract it to /tmp/cmark-gfm
        4. install the cmake package if needed
        5. run make
        6. run make install

So it automates the whole process of installing cmark-gfm if it sees that it's not currently installed. If I want to reinstall it for some reason I can just delete /usr/local/lib/libcmark-gfm.so and next time I run Salt, all of that will happen again.

Other than that, tonight I'll probably do a microdose test of some mushrooms I'm getting. That'll be fun.

I recently found a club that allows me to get very precise measurements - plus, I know exactly which kind of mushrooms I'm getting, which is a huge bonus. When I did them as a teenager, and even the last few years, I never really knew what I was getting. Now I've learned a ton about mushrooms, and how different kinds can give you different highs. A lot of my knowledge about cannabis helped me understand how that works, but it is still surface level understanding.

I'm getting what's known as "Penis Envy", and I'm really looking forward to it.

Maybe one day, when these things are destigmatized as well, and the choice and education is there, your partner will be more open to trying. :) Otherwise, I'd encourage you to share your desire with her. I'm sure finding a club near you wouldn't be too hard.

probably sleep. i am done with classes for the semester and am just waiting on grades now. most likely also going to hammer out the rest of the established sections on hierarchical tags here and how they're used on tildes. i think i'll submit it on here when i finish it for some public comment on the standards as i see them since i don't really want to be the one forcing some sort of inherent standard on people. so far it seems like we can actually manage to establish a pretty simple standard for how they're used, so right now the document is technically super overcomplicated, but writing out the nitty-gritty details is convenient for going back and standardizing things (and also for future reference).

I'll be working on a game of Paranoia to run for four of my friends later on. I'm not running it this weekend, just doing planning and recruiting. Some rough ideas:

    • Due to a promotion, one of the player characters ends up with the same identifier as an NPC and receives a completely incorrect loadout.
    • The mission dispatch room is a small, cramped office with a single annoying song blaring on repeat from a speaker that nobody has the clearance to turn off.
    • At some point they will be told they must "locate The Jabberwocky". Nobody knows what (or potentially who?) it is because the data itself is corrupted, but also nobody will admit to not knowing what it is. The buck keeps getting passed to lower and lower ranking members as scapegoats for inevitable failure. (In the end, anything at all will be accepted as The Jabberwocky.)

Gonna return to coding up my static site generator v2. It's been on standby for a few weeks, but now I'm done with my MA applications and am totally free (well I still need to study but at least there is no rushing anymore), so I'll go back and complete it. It won't be done this weekend, but I want to be able to port over my current blog in a few days, add Sass processing, a couple templating engines (Jinja2 will definitely be there, but I also want to support Mako; any suggestions for a good Python templating engine is appreciated), and release the initial version. One thing I have to figure out is where exactly to put the templating machinery, and the other is if I can make use of Django's templating engine and add it as a templating backend.

So today I finally did my MA interview, and it was smooth and cheerful. Yesterday they did a preliminary exam with around 50 candidates (a guesstimate), and chose 15 for interviews, one of whom was me; and they'll admit 10 of us. Three of the professors were on the committee, two of them were Italian so we spoke a couple sentences (one of them greeted me saying Come va? "How's it going?" in Italian, which was sweet). It was a nice and informal setting, and I feel like I left a good impression on them. Two weeks later, I'll get to learn if I made it, or if I need to prepare for applying to the next school, which is in Ankara.

The campus was so fucking beautiful, I definitely fall in love! This school used to be the Robert College, an American private school built in Istanbul in mid-19th-century (later donated to Turkey and became public), and the buildings show it. Many of them are nice, low, masonry beauties. There are trees and grass everywhere. The campus is humongous and is right next to the Bosphorus. I hadn't seen those parts when I went there before for the exam or even before for a movie (their cinema club is quite active and does regular screenings of alternative movies, updated every month), and definitely fall in love with it. There are cats roaming around, and they are not crazy bastards like those in the Istanbul University. All in all, if I qualify, it'll be a two-year-long dream to read in this place.

Tonight we're going to eat Peking duck with my brother and his wife, and then we are going to go see Detective Pikachu!

Tomorrow and sunday (and maybe monday if I'm slow!) I am going to brave the forecasted rain to demolish and then build new raised garden beds next to my garage because I've GOT to get some things planted before the end of may! our growing season is so short, my corn is going to be pathetic at this rate! I'm trying to decide if I want to do my raised beds with butt joints or if I want to try to put in the extra time to do half laps on cedar 4x4s, which will look nicer and last better, but extend my building time by quite a bit.

I'm bad for being too ambitious in my plans and then too slow in my execution and too bad at finishing what I started when it becomes hard!

Sorry for the incredibly late reply! I decided on the half-laps and it WAS a shitload of work! haha

One of my friends is a permaculture goddess, so she did up a garden plan for me since it's not something I've ever dipped my toe into other than planting some berry bushes and fruit trees and killing some tomatoes - I'm super into the idea of creating garden beds with edible perennials, but there's not too many good ones for my climate - so we've decided on 4 beds, one with asparagus and strawberries which are complimentary crops as they grow on different levels of soil, and rhubarb, so those are all perennials which is cool. We'll do one with "the three sisters" which is squash, corn and runner beans, and one with onions and broccoli and kale and beets and peas! Might not get everything going this year, but it's always good to have a plan! Also, potatoes - but potatoes are a bit funny and you need to build up a bed as you grow them, so I might leave that for next year as I've already spent what feels like a million dollars on lumber this year! (you did 2x12s so you must be feeling the same!)

What's your garden plan like? Do you start indoor seedlings or direct sow? You're smart to do a cloche.. I've been trying to move towards being plastic free so i've been struggling with the idea of buying so. much. plastic.

Wow, that garden plan sounds absolutely awesome! Do you have such a big yard to allow all of those beds? We've decided that while we'd want to grow SO many things, we should probably concentrate on produce that we can't get in the market. Specifically - good tomatoes and cucumbers. The cucumbers in America (and Europe) are just horrendous, let me tell you. I'm used to Persian cucumbers that are a lot more flavorful, and got my wife addicted too. So that's what we're growing. And some habeneros, if we manage not to kill them, haha. My wife seeded everything and grew it indoors for the first few months of spring (I would've killed it for sure) and we moved everything outside a few weeks ago. So far everything's happy!
tbh, we're in OR, so the lumber is pretty cheap, but we did pay a hefty some for the dirt (our yard is basically clay, so can't grow much in it).

We bought our house almost solely on the fact that it is a funny little 750sqft 1940s bungalow on this inexplicably huuuuuuge lot for our city. We have a double garage, a single garage, RV parking, a big backyard, and a driveway and yard in the front as well. It's truly at least 4x bigger than the previous house we owned here. I'm always trying to get people I know to move to our neighbourhood because the yards out here are bonkers. (but we're in the quadrant of the city with a negative reputation, so no one ever does!)

I'm nervous to try things like tomatoes and cucumbers because I'm still fairly bad at gardening and I think both are a little picky, but I agree that they're nearly trash from the grocery store, so it would probably be a big upgrade! If your habeneros end up working and you're a hot sauce person you should let me know, my dad makes this mango/habenero hot sauce every couple of years which is DELICIOUS and I could get you the recipe!

I was craving some hanger steak (which was first introduced to me at a Korean barbeque restaurant), so I decided to set out to find some locally so I could cook it at home.

In case you didn’t know, hanger steak (a.k.a. butcher’s steak) is a flat cut of beef similar to flank/skirt that butchers used to keep for themselves. It has an amazing flavor and texture - imagine a cut with the tenderness of filet mignon, the juiciness of a ribeye, and the full flavor of brisket, for a fraction of the cost. For years, it’s been a well kept secret of the trade and is rather difficult to find.

Some 31 phone calls later (not an exaggeration) and I found a store in my locale that carries hanger steak (a butcher, to be exact). I found a recipe on YouTube, cooked it up, and enjoyed every bite. Was it worth the treasure hunt? Absolutely.

Saturday/Sunday/Monday don't have any plans as of yet.

This evening (Friday), my partner and I will be going to play some pool, as it's been a while since we did. Beyond that, it will be likely some Plex n chill afterward, and bedtime haha.

I hope to make some more progress on my Godot project, and possibly do some writing for a project I've offered my services on, depending if they have any need for me.

Moonsorrow 14LP boxset just arrived in the mail. It wasn't cheap but it's enormous and top notch audio quality. Probably going to spend a few days listening to it :')

I'm going to watch the detective pikachu movie with a few friends this weekend, I've been hanging out with people a lot more recently and it makes me feel very good because the last group of friends I had treated me pretty bad. The movie looks dumb but not that incredibly bad, hopefully we'll share some nice experiences : )

Other than that, I'm just going to be listening to some new Electroacoustic/EAI/Musique Concrète music if I can. I have been enjoying these styles of music a lot recently and I want to expand my knowledge of them. What about you, OP?

Tired of constant crashing, I have decided to reinstall Windows from scratch on my gaming computer before I make the rather drastic choice to replace the GPU that may or may not be at fault.

Honestly I might just install Linux on the PC and virtualize Windows for everything Proton doesn't work on. Windows is never as stable as Linux for me.

If I do end up getting a new graphics card, I'm thinking about getting an RTX 2060. It seems to be the best value for a reasonably future-proof card since it appears likely that ray-tracing is going to be more and more important. Plus it offers more than 3x the performance of my current card according to Passmark's GPU ratings. The few things I do that use GPGPU will probably be around 10x faster since I'll be switching from AMD, which doesn't seem to get as much support.

What Linux distros did you have in mind? I’ve been digging Solus as my daily driver on both my desktop and chromebook, but I also wanted to check out Manjaro Budgie.

Typically I would use Kubuntu, since it typically just works with anything. However, I had a few hiccups with installing it on a laptop I bought not too long ago, partly because it had issues with an outdated kernel. That's not a problem now, but I figured I would try Pop!_OS because it seems to be more up to date and has support for Steam (which is a requirement since this is a gaming PC).

Alternatively, I was considering experimenting with UnRAID.

That being said, the goal is to get Windows working natively. I have a lot of older games that simply aren't likely to be supported by any Wine or Proton updates.

I'm very new to linux (centos) and server management and have little experience programming, but l'm working on building my own website, mostly on the backend side and using a CMS for the main page(no idea which one yet). So far l know basic navigational commands, how to exit vim and how to get nginx and php-fpm to spit out the right pages at me at the right time.
It's a remote server so everything is done with ssh and a little scp on the side, but no physical access to the thing.

I'm also running a Mediawiki instance on a subpage, and l've been trying to install a visual editor NodeJS program on it so editing is easier. Since l'm not entirely sure on how to handle access control, l gave it access to the MW api file but it still spits out permission errors and just doesn't want to work, so if anyone has any idea how to get this going please tell me!

When this does work l'll probably start off making a list of things l want to do (thanks @euphoria066 for the suggestion) and prioritize things l want to work on first, instead of doing everything at once and losing interest fast.

Tonight: going out to see Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke live in NYC. (!!!)
Saturday: probably catching another live set at my favorite jazz club, Small's, led by drummer Gerry Gibbs with a powerhouse quintet including Ravi Coltrane on saxophone.
Sunday: second visit to a wedding venue in Queens to put down a deposit.

Might make a new post, but I got a job offer for a new help desk position at $17.50 compared to the $14 I'm making now. No insurance through work, 40 minute drive compared to 20, and it's a contract position that's over by September. So my weekend is probably going to be noodling that over.

Edit: Right now, I'm caught between more money and learning new stuff vs being out on my ass in 6 months and having to roll my own insurance compared to the employment I have now.

Yeah, I'm thinking that, especially with the revelation that the contract doesn't specify that I'm working 40 hours a week. I can then say for the next job that I worked $17.50, but that doesn't outweigh the cons, and it's nice to know I can still do an interview. I'm going to ask some questions on Monday and probably decline.
