What did you do this week?
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their week. Did you accomplish any goals? Suffer a failure? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
I've now fully regained my sense of smell. I hope it sticks around this time - two years ago after my surgery, it only lasted a few days and then was gone again. But it's been two weeks with it now, with the past week feeling like it's at its "peak sensitivity".
Fifteen years without it (with some interruptions). The past week's been fun! I've rediscovered some memorable ones from my childhood (mint syrup), and discovered some new incredible ones (Amaretto!). Taste has slightly changed; anything with an "aftertaste" in the throat I couldn't taste before.
I talked to a few people about this and two of them asked me to write about the experience. Would anyone else be interested? Should I post a write-up on Tildes? With people losing their sense of smell left and right due to COVID I suppose it could be interesting to read about?
Seconded!
Huh, so you couldn't taste aftertastes.
Were you usually able to tell when you had bad breath, or did you have others tell you if you did (or maybe you were diligent with oral hygiene and never had an issue)?
Nope, impossible. Today I had a burger with onions and I could 100% taste the "onion breath", which was not a thing I was able to notice before.
It's actually one of the most annoying parts, I needed my friends' help to tell me if I had bad breath or even if I smelled bad (eg. after sweating), or if some clothes needed washing, etc.
My girlfriend and I are working to open a business and as part of that we're getting back into wood burning.
We used to make all kinds of art work, but unfortunately the makerspace we used shut down, so we lost access to a laser. And most lasers that can cut through the sort of materials we prefer to use are either extremely expensive, highly sketchy, or both.
But now I'm happy to announce that our new laser finally arrived. It's an Epilog Fusion Edge 60W, which is definitely not cheap, but is essentially a newer, fancier version of what we used to use, so it should have the cutting power we're looking for. And we know Epilog is a great brand because we've used them before.
And this one is ours, so we don't need to share it or only use it for a few hours at a time. I'm hoping we can create some awesome stuff that will help our business grow.
On Etsy, by chance? If not, you should consider joining it and selling some of your engravings there to help offset some of the cost of the engraver. I recently ordered a laser cut Toronto Maple Leafs sign from there as a Christmas gift for my BiL for his new bar, and he loved it. And I would definitely be down to buy something like that awesome Mark of the Ninja engraving for my own wall too.
Thanks! That piece was for a charity raffle during SGDQ 2016! I actually got some help from the dev team.
There's definitely some really neat stuff on Etsy, but we're not currently on there, we have our own site. Soon we'll include a much larger selection of products we build ourselves, but for now our selection is somewhat limited.
Our end goal is to open a board game store over in Detroit with a small maker space built in. But for numerous reasons that's difficult at the moment, so we're working on saving up by starting to produce accessories for games.
We feel there's a natural synergy with having a small maker space incorporated into our store because we believe people will want all sorts of custom components and accessories. So 3D printed figures, terrain, organizers, etc...
Ah, right... I actually seem to remember talking to you about your engraving being on SGDQ a while ago. Let me know when you add some of your engravings to your site so I can check them out! :)
Also, that's a really cool idea, combining a board game store + maker space too. I would have killed to be able to make some laser cut and 3D printed minifigs, props, etc. at my old local tabletop and comicbook store back in the day.
Yeah, I've talked about it a few times. That was one of the last pieces I made before our maker space shut down. And it's the one I'm most proud of. But I'm so excited to have a laser again.
I'm glad you think it's a good idea too. It's encouraging to hear more people think we're on the right track. And hopefully it's something that will bring people in and keep them coming back. We want to build an inclusive community since ultimately board games are a social experience.
I started walking again. It's cold, wet and slushy outside, but thankfully the rivers of ice have mostly melted away. Doing my long circuit around the local golf course gets me in a proper sweat, so I know it's decent exercise. Soon I'll be able to restart my indoor exercises - I'm thinking every 3rd day for now.
It's probably not what you wanted, but I've been wanting to get my hands on a Yamaha QY700 for a very long time. Mostly because I think it's probably the best companion for my SY-99 (even though technically it already has it's own sequencer in it - but this one is clearly much better!)
Of course me buying it wouldn't make much of a difference anyways because as much as I love music, I have no musical talent whatsoever.
I started my Speech class. It might be the worst one I've ever taken; even though it's remote, it still managed to give me so much anxiety I almost had a panic attack.
I also finally got my TS100 soldering iron in the mail. The one-day shipping turned into one and a half weeks (during which time the Pinecil that I also wanted finally became available for order). Unfortunately I don't have time for the repair project I bought it for, but I did a quick job assembling some pin headers to a breakout board and the experience was unbelievably nice! It got hot lightning fast, and the tips have enough thermal mass to quickly bring contacts to temp in spite of the tiny package. The only real problem I have with it is that because I bought it off of Amazon, it's a more expensive "value added" package with stuff that I don't really need and it came with a power supply with what feels like the world's shortest power cord - though at least it offers the highest amount of power that the iron is designed to take.
I’ve been searching for the right rescue puppy for my next agility project, and I think I’ve found her! She’s quite a drive away, but she’s young (5 months or so), active, has toy drive, and she’s expected to get no bigger than 10-12 pounds. The only box she didn’t check was that she’s got long hair, but I’ve already got a full sized Aussie, so it’s not a huge change for me.
