Despite seeming impractical this sounds like it might be easier than some captchas I've seen lately.

y'know, I came into the comments thinking about making a comment along those lines. For some reason, I've seen a huge uptick in captchas recently, and annoyingly a lot of the checkbxes now lead to the image verification. It's quite annoying, but even moreso in that apparently my eyesight is a bit less than optimal.

Also, I noted that a comment on the article indicated that it's so faithful to the original that cheat codes work, so iddqd is all you need, although idspispopd has lived in my head rent-free for 35ish years. lol

(and idkfa for anyone who doesn't want to bother looking any up…)

Usually the grid of images I can do. AWS had the difficult to read letters a few times and they were so hard that most of the time I'd choose the option to have it speak to me.

But then I've had the motorcycles / busses multi-tile select one fail recently sometimes, where I select every tile that has a piece of the thing, but it says try again.... like bitch, I've done these for as long as they exist. So who knows. heh.

There was a period a few months back where I was getting them incessantly on Google (at least, on the private tabs on my mobile browser—I use that instead because I don't want to clutter my search history with super random stuff and/or all the tiny hyper-specific variations), and... Yeah, during that time they'd fail so much for some reason. I could do them five times total before getting through, it was incredibly frustrating.

Conversely, I've seen some that are "find the identical picture" with one image, and a grid of images with one being the same, just flipped and/or with particle effects over it. That one is nice, though probably not the most effective these days...

And that was the turning point for me to stop using YouTube and go back to books. I know, I will probably miss some channels I had rssed but at last I've got back to having lots of fun by consuming books. Thank you Alphabet/Google :)

Some amount of that is everyone is struggling with the AI crawler load in the small-to-mid-sized website area while the largest websites might be able to handle the load but they want to make it hard for the AI crawlers anyway so they can sell exclusive access to content and/or are developing their own competitor.

I'd love to see adoption of offering an atypical captcha as an alternative. It isn't just a matter of annoyance -- many folks with disabilities and in the neurodivergent community report having more trouble with captcha than others. The W3C group drafted a notice on the inaccessibility of captcha and how they result in a denial of service for disabled folk. Captcha alternatives would make government and healthcare services more accessible to such folk. Probably not DOOM captcha specifically, that raises other issues, but it has created a spotlight to talk about captcha accessibility (even if the article is half a year old now).

Such a great idea, but Doom has always made me sick.

Currently on mobile, cannot play the CAPTCHA game. Which disappoints me because this sounds like a fun version.
