Coincidentally I heard a news story that Bose is doing this to one of their sound system components today.

I'm also a big fan of foobar2000 mobile. The FTP server works well for transferring files over the local network.

foobar2000 is great. I have good memories from using it on Windows. The iOS app, while functional, is too ugly for my taste ☹️

It is paid, with a subscription option (USD 1.69/month) and a lifetime license (USD 16.99).

I'm curious, does anyone actually use the subscription option for apps that also offer a one-time price? I've never really understood the appeal, or why someone would choose that option. I imagine that someone who owns an iPhone is probably not in a position that they couldn't afford the $15 difference, and presumably someone who wants to shell out for an app would, in their mind, expect to be using it longer than 10 months and realize they'd be saving money by avoiding an ongoing subscription. Is it because iOS does not have a good trial or refund policy, so you'd treat the subscription as sort of a paid trial period before either cancelling or buying the app? Or is there some other justification that I'm blind to?

I do sometimes. In particular for flighty. If you haven’t used it, it is a fantastic app for tracking plane flights. Well worth the pro subscription in my opinion. However, I only fly very rarely. The lifetime unlock is $300. If I flew frequently, I would get that in a heartbeat. They have a pay as you go weekly subscription for $5/week. I just get it and immediately cancel so I have pro for when I actually have flights.

I will also use it as an extended trial. For example albums, which is my favorite front end for Apple Music. I can’t see the prices anymore, but I originally bought a 1 year subscription to see if I would actually use it, and then bought a lifetime.

      I love having the flexibility.

Ditto. It's mostly a "sometimes" thing for me too, for similar reasons; Either the one-time/lifetime payment is way too expensive and I know I will rarely use the app so subbing and unsubbing as needed will be cheaper even over the long run... or I just want to test the full features of an app so I will sub for a month to try it before deciding whether to buy the lifetime or not. I absolutely despise SAAS so try to avoid it as much as possible, but sometimes a lifetime isn't actually worth getting (or I don't even know if it is yet), so I like having the flexibility to sub month-to-month instead as well.

p.s. The last app I did that with was Hevy. I subbed for a few months to try it, and liked it so much that I ended up buying their $75 lifetime sub afterwards.

No, iOS refunds are mostly no questions asked. They won't codify it but I've never asked for a refund off the App Store and not gotten it, including for when my mom just forgot to turn a trial off.

I have had this on my phone for a while, used to use it a bunch for playing audio files, enjoyed its simplicity.

Didn't realize there's a subscription now though, I suppose it's optional as I have never paid any subscription to use it and never felt the need

Apparently it's only free for "up to 80 songs". Maybe I was grandfathered in OR very possibly never ran into the limit because of the way I used it (for a few specific albums over bluetooth while showering).

Good to know that if I want to listen to my full library I suppose I will need to use a different app (I have also used Cs Music which is free but allows tips). Not against paying for apps but it doesn't offer anything I can't just get otherwise for free

I have since moved to Amperfy + a navidrome server for all my in-home listening and can just use the free apps for the rare case I need listening outside the home on my phone specifically

If anyone reading this thread is disappointed that the mentioned app is iOS only and wants an Android recommendation, the one I use and recommend is PowerAmp. Very pretty, highly functional, good out of the box but also customizable, and has an option to purchase it direct from the programmer and use it on devices without Google Play.

I don't remember why I stopped using poweramp some years ago but I moved to musicolet and it's been great.

Definitely interested in trying this but it seems like an ad? Not sure what the policies are like on Tildes so maybe that's fine. ~rodrigo, I'm assuming you're the Rodrigo mentioned as an author?...

~rodrigo, I'm assuming you're the Rodrigo mentioned as an author? Any chance you could add ListenBrainz scrobbling (if I actually end up using the app)?

If anyone is a Plex user and hasn't explored the PlexAmp app for Android (and maybe iOS?) I would really encourage you to check it out. It's one of the most thoughtfully made apps I've used in any category. It seems to be some sort of a passion project based on the general vibe, extensive settings tweaks that are available, and the fact that they don't prioritize things like porting it to the android TV Plex app which seems like a sound business decision but a lame thing to develop.

It's really just a wonderful app that's made owning my own music library so much more satisfying. I particularly love it's ability to seamlessly down sample my FLACs into something more manageable when I'm on the go and accessing from other networks. Above all, it just looks and feels amazing. Spotify isn't a particularly ugly app but it feels so clunky and dated in comparison.
