That's unfortunate. Discord is a fantastic service (nothing else comes close in terms of performance and reliability), but is sitting on a whole bunch of user data with no direct monetization...

I really hoped they'd sell to Microsoft. Historical precedent around IPOs is rather bad...

MS has been pretty good with the acquisitions in terms of bringing them into the fold without totally borking them. Way better than an IPO... its a shame.

Wait, so you want Discord to sell your data to advertisers?

No, I'm saying that an IPO might force that, as opposed to an acquisition from a large company that can afford to run Discord at a loss.

That’s some intense optimism. You think I Microsoft doesn’t sell data?

The point is Microsoft can afford to run it at a loss until they find a direct monetization strategy that works. Discord cannot. Discord + IPO = practically guaranteed data sale edit I repeated...

Really wanted to see Discord integrated to Xbox ecosystem, but at the same time still have a bad taste in my mouth to what they did to Skype.
