Thoughts on community events (e.g. reddit's Place)?
I really enjoyed reddit's Place event from April 1st, and the button pressing event was also a rather interesting one. I don't currently have any ideas for what kinds of events could be done (other than another event like the Place) but would definitely like to see some community-driven events in the future.
Anybody have any thoughts on this?
I think if the only events people want to do are things that Reddit already did it would not be a good thing. Place has been done, secret santa is a thing, etc etc.
Tildes needs to come up with its own identity and its own events or it just becomes minireddit.
I have an idea but I don't think @deimos will let me do it here even on April 1st. ;)
As for community events I think we are seeing them already, esp on ~creative and ~comp. At some point providing unique group specific features to facilitate those kind of events would also be cool to see and @deimos has talked about potentially doing that in the future. E.g. perhaps by letting groups run fundraisers to get specific/unique features implemented they want/need sooner.
I once tried to start up a reddit music festival in the music defaults. Then I got overwhelmed with IRL goings-on and left the idea on the backburner because the admins said they didn’t want to help in any official capacity. Never came to fruition, but I’m still interested. I could dig up some of the old brainstorming notes I have for it in an abandoned private subreddit.
I know this isn’t exactly what you meant, just the first thing that came to mind.
A music festival could be the core of an overall meetup. It might be a bit premature at this point, but there are certainly tons of diverse musical acts looking to get their name out there who'd be happy to fill in a lineup.
My idea was actually an entirely online music festival, hence why reddit was such an awful platform for pulling it off. The vision was that we'd use live Youtube videos for each performance (or break it out by "stage") then each set gets a thread. I went so far as to brainstorm on how we could make it a full-fledged music and arts festival by bringing in other art-related subreddits. Even had ideas about how to include /r/food and /r/foodporn for concessions!
I'm open to an in-person festival or online. Both are cool ideas.
Just shut up and slam ;)
The pinnacle of my 8+ years on reddit.
I think events would be great! Even for those not participating, they help to make the website feel like a real community. I also think that having neat events would help ~ to grow once growth becomes a more important part of the overall strategy.
As for event ideas, I have one. Since the website is going to be open source, we could run a ~ hackathon. Over a couple of days, teams and individuals could work to make new features for the site. These could be judged by the community, and perhaps some of the best could be refined for implementation. Not only could it be a fun event (for people into ~comp at least), it could help improve the site, or at least get ideas flowing for future improvements.
A hackathon sounds like a great idea! It would be really beneficial for users and the site itself.
Hey @cfabbro if you guys ever decide to do a gift exchange, I want in on that.
Well i'm hoping to get a ~ Dwarf Fortress succession game going.
