Wasn't me but the free will thing does boil down to either something supernatural if you believe it exists outside of everything else tangible in the universe, or you acknowledge that all your actions are the result of an unbroken chain of events. I think the fallacy lies in the perception that there's a future, the only moment that exists presently is the present. Once you stop pretending you can step out of time and observe a chain of events you realize you only ever make one decision and our decisions are a product of our past.
I'm sure anyone 28 or older will hate me for even pointing this out, but that is shockingly old! I question how much that has to do with the places users have been taken from and how much it has...
The average age of all Tildes users who chose to provide an age was 28.27, and the median age was 27.
I'm sure anyone 28 or older will hate me for even pointing this out, but that is shockingly old! I question how much that has to do with the places users have been taken from and how much it has to do with the goals of the site appealing to bitter people who hate where the internet is right now. Moreover, I wonder how that'll change over time. Assuming this site will grow, does it just attract more of the same demographic, or will it tap into something that younger people realize they also want? That'll be interesting to see, either way.

I'm 100% sure I know which user this is even if they deny it when I ask them and I'm unsure what to do with this information except laugh really hard. EDIT: I just checked that response and none of the rest of it lines up the user I'm thinking of but I choose to be stubborn and I now believe that they lied on the rest of it.

I have either 2 or 3 people I need to make friends with here. I say 2 or 3 because I don't actually remember if I answered that myself.
The Hogwarts house with the least representation is, surprisingly, Slytherin
The only reason this doesn't surprise me is that this is likely due to self-identification. I bet if we all decided to do a bunch of decent online Hogwarts house tests, Slytherin would be second, as it tends to be defined as just Ravenclaw but with more self-serving ambition.
It may be surprising, but actually Reddit's core demographics on the age front are fairly similar. Average age in reddit is also mid-to-late 20s last I checked. You have some notable exceptions to...

It may be surprising, but actually Reddit's core demographics on the age front are fairly similar. Average age in reddit is also mid-to-late 20s last I checked. You have some notable exceptions to this trend--leagueoflegends, leagueoflegends, fortnite, leagueoflegends--but for the most part, your typical reddit crowd tends to be in their 20s.
Also, I just turned 30 last week, but I don't hate you for being shocked.
The only reason this doesn't surprise me is that this is likely due to self-identification.
Probably. It might also be to do with hard-choosing between vague houses. Each house has traits that overlap with another. Gryffindors are supposed to be the HEROES but are also implicitly loyal (a Hufflepuff thing if there ever were one). Ravenclaws are nerds for nerddom's sake, but competence is a core trait in being Slytherin and Gryffindor too, just tinted with another purpose. Slytherins and Gryffindors are both super concerned with image and ambition, for somewhat different reasons.
It's hard to escape the notion that Slytherins are infested with racists while gryffindors are infested with elitist pricks who can't imagine why anyone would be annoyed at their self-righteousness. Since the group taking this survey tilted fairly hard left in the self-identify politically, it's presumable that there is more comfort with being infested with elitist, self-righteous pricks than with out-and-out racists.
Edit: in the interests of transparency, I should self-identify that I said I was ENFJ ("The Protagonist") and put myself as Gryffindor, but could easily be a Slytherin depending on the day and the topics I recently discussed.
I think a lot of it may simply have to do with the following combination: Users in their mid-to-late twenties and into their thirties are typically Millennials, a generation that grew up as the...
I'm sure anyone 28 or older will hate me for even pointing this out, but that is shockingly old! I question how much that has to do with the places users have been taken from and how much it has to do with the goals of the site appealing to bitter people who hate where the internet is right now.
I think a lot of it may simply have to do with the following combination:
Users in their mid-to-late twenties and into their thirties are typically Millennials, a generation that grew up as the internet really started to take off. The internet practically belonged to Millennials for quite some time.
When you're younger, you're really just interested primarily in memes and entertainment. Sure, you can be interested in politics and news as well, but you tend to stick around for the lulz the most.
As you grow older, you can still be interested in entertaining content, but you start becoming less interested in the current memes and jokes flying around the internet (Gen Z is now taking over) and instead find yourself wanting to figure out what's going on in the world more than you did when you were younger.
As you grow older, you're also often more interested in politics, and with the current state of political polarization plaguing every corner of the internet, it's turning people away from the websites they ordinarily enjoy and destroying what used to be healthy relationships between them and their loved ones.
Take all of the above and you have an internet culture that is shifting away from Millennials, a tool that they use so frequently that parts of it have become a part of their identity, and on top of it they're shifting away from their old interests and moving onto new ones. Worse still, the growing toxicity floating around is driving them away from the few things they still enjoy on the internet. In other words, there is now a chasm growing between Millennials and the current internet culture, leaving a wide gap in internet identity. Tildes is filling that wide gap for at least a certain subset of that Millennial population because it appeals to those things that are missing. It promises civility, stability, privacy, interesting topics of conversation, and sub-communities that people can become a part of.
This is coming from another Millennial, but I don't really speak for the majority. This is just my own assessment :)
Moreover, I wonder how that'll change over time. Assuming this site will grow, does it just attract more of the same demographic, or will it tap into something that younger people realize they also want?
Right now Tildes is establishing a certain community and mindset, and tools are being considered and developed to keep this community as it is. There will definitely be quite a bit of variation, but I don't think anyone here minds that at all. In fact, we probably welcome that variety openly. What matters is that the core principles of Tildes are upheld. In fact, as Gen Z gets older, they will very likely start experiencing problems similar to the ones Millennials face and a place like Tildes may end up being exactly what they're looking for. I think that could be a very special thing.
I bet if we all decided to do a bunch of decent online Hogwarts house tests, Slytherin would be second, as it tends to be defined as just Ravenclaw but with more self-serving ambition.
That's debatable, actually. Slytherins value cunning rather than intelligence, as well as valuing traits like leadership and ambition. They're quite a bit different from Ravenclaws. What I find more surprising is that Hufflepuffs aren't more prevalent than Gryffindors, given their values for e.g. hard work and patience.
Of course, we could very much disagree on this and I could be way off the mark. In any case, I'm sure enough people here are nerdy enough to have taken the online sorting tests.

First of all it masks your home IP, which is nice since it's super easy to find on most IRC servers. You instead show up as the IP of the server you have a shell account on. This gives you privacy and security, which is useful if you happen to be a high profile person or you somehow annoy the wrong people, someone will end up testing the the security of your system for you.
Secondly, you don't have to worry about keeping your computer on to stay connected. You can just idle in a channel as long as you like, and if your home PC reboots or you put your laptop into sleep mode, the IRC client is still running on the server and you're not missing out on anything; you can still receive privmsgs while your computer is off.
I usually use Konversation, a rather old version of it, since it integrates well with my desktop. When I'm on the the terminal, I use weechat, which is definitely more powerful but is indeed kind...

When I'm on the the terminal, I use weechat, which is definitely more powerful but is indeed kind of a pain to set up. I've used xchat once or twice, not enough to issue a definitive opinion, but I've heard good things about it and didn't encounter anything that would change that perception. IRC does require more configuration then for example Skype or Discord, but it's not too bad and you only have to do it once :) did you have problems with the client itself or was it with discovering servers / channels?

For being "pseudo-scientific bullshit", MBTI has rather impressive predictive power in my experience. That nobody is doing any serious research on a topic does not automatically make it bullshit.

I know there are at least a couple of people running around with lineageOS on their phone based on a thread I was on earlier.
The most prominent non‐major desktop OS is ChromeOS, with four replies. There are zero people who use anything but iOS or Android on their mobile devices.

It's quite easy to “hack” it assuming you know how to use the terminal. Linux applications is currently in beta, but yes you can (exclusive to the Pixelbook during beta).
Isn't ChromeOS locked down hard?

Thank you to every single person who participated in the first demographics survey, in what I plan to be a recurring event! I appreciate the time you took, and I hope you find the results fascinating.

Yes and no, because most of them come with a developer mode switch that gives you full power. It's locked down while that switch is off.
By that metric you could almost argue that Android is Linux as well, I think it's fine to distinct ChromeOS from Linux in general.
I'm sorry, a lineageOS cannot create fertile offspring after mating with a Android. Thusly, LineageOS is sepreate and distinct from Android.
