Suggestion: easy button to switch to night mode
Just wanted to suggest that it would be nice to have a toggle switch button either next to our username or at least on the right in the User Menu after you click your username.
Having to go all the way into settings every evening is a bit awkward.
That is excellent idea. Perhaps make it similar to how arstechnica does.
A nice way to do this would be an "automatic version" where based on the time of day (based on the user's device's clock) it changes between light and dark mode (or the solarised version based on the user's choice).
This. I feel the regular user may not even be aware of night/day themes on their apps.
Good idea and fairly easy to implement. I would do a PR myself, but I don't really have time right now.
It sounds to me like OP regularly switches between a light theme during the day and a dark theme at night. Set it and forget it is the opposite of what they are asking for.
Yeah, I mean as @Eyrlid says I wouldn't want the dark theme during the day, but at night it is nice to switch over so that there isn't this white screen blaring at your eyes. I do use f.lux but that is not the same issue.
Do you have f.lux or similar? I find that a better solution than implementing night mode on every site.
F.lux "only" reduces blue light, while by "night mode" @MotherIrony meant the dark skin for tildes. Those two achieve different effects.
Yeah I use f.lux but still the all white background when I have all the lights off is really bright and the solarized dark is much preferable. Just having a drop down in the User Menu rather than all the way in settings would be ideal
How do you turn on dark mode? I don't see user settings or anything like that anywhere.
Thanks!
I highly recommend @Bauke’s Dracula theme btw. He did a fantastic job with it and it’s what I use for my nightmode. ;)
Click your username in the top right corner then click settings. There is a theme picker at the top.
Thanks!
I'm going to say this is probably a better suggestion for Tildes Extended. It's basically our version of RES at this point, and it's focused heavily towards theming right now. I can see a darkmode toggle being right up their alley, while being a fringe enough feature that it doesn't justify inclusion in mainline tildes code at this point.
With tildes being a young site, open source, and very willing to accept contributions, perhaps we can integrate many of these features right into the site.
A very nice place to include things that might be too burdensome right now, though.
I'd be a bit disappointed if Tildes went the way of reddit in this regard - RES is totally unusable on mobile for the most part.
Do you browse in incognito mode? The theme setting is saved locally and should not reset unless your browser is setup otherwise.
I change it at night but the default stays the same as the white one, and no I don't browse in incognito
That exists already though... just set your theme in the user settings to one of the dark ones.
