Its a beautiful work, really brings to mind a certain atmosphere and mood when you read it. Sort of like one of those timeless classic fables.

Interesting stuff. Let me share the same for r/polandball - 500k subs. Our traffic is almost similar, but stronger on the redesign, less so on the reddit app.

In short, no. I do not think Tildes will be trapped in a never-ending cycle of snobbishness and stuffiness until we are speaking like Victorian-era gentlemen ("Greetings, my dear colleagues, wouldst thou like to indulge in a strenous bout of politic waffling?").

It is easier to tend towards low-effort instead of high-effort. People naturally gravitate to easy digestible content. Once you lose the culture that enforces the necessary standards, it's hard to get it back.

WoW's classic community by comparison is full of purists who vehemently hate any change, which is a stark contrast to the OSRS community that has accepted change as long as it doesn't result in a shittier game experience.

Don't forget the purists of the OSRS community were also a notable voice in the initial launch years. But eventually, dwindling numbers forced them to accept updates, and the game grew massively from there (also helped by Jagex milking RS3).

Whether or not this happens to WoW will depend how well it can sustain a stable player base. As numbers decline in the long run, the pressure for updates builds.

Quote from the Discord AMA by Toady:

A tutorial could be part of what we do for new players; we'll be able to be more specific later. But it's on the table, yeah.

Don't bank on it though, there were a lot of questions and Toady is the sort of person who doesn't like to say no directly. I'm guessing later may be anywhere between few months to a few years.

With the ever-evolving complexity of the game, your best bet is likely the DFwiki or Peridexis's tutorial.

Yes, the potential implications to the development roadmap is unfortunate. The brother's health problems have likely made this move a necessity, since Toady has traditionally been very protective of the Dwarf Fortress IP.

At any rate, regardless of the outcome, this appears to be the gentlest way Toady will be able to make this change - a friendly indie developer who has supposedly guaranteed his freedoms in development, and retaining of the Classic version for free, ala Cave Story+ with Nicalis.

If I had to hazard a guess, better integration for modders, possibly some sort of API so DFhack doesn't break every release. Either that, or we may finally get the complete legends mode CSV export. Who knows, really?

Haha pretty much, why? I don't consider myself a manga fan, many feel too airy for my tastes. Might try Jojo next.

Activity is a fairly nebulous term; it doesn't really convey a direct meaning to the user. The word Forum/Board/Thread would work better I feel - everyone instinctively knows how those work.

The community in particular is very accepting of bugs, given that DF is free and in a perpetual state of development. As a result, the community not only does not abhor bugs, but celebrates and immortalizes them, oftentimes long after they've been fixed (eg. catsplosions, drunk cats, carp). The old DF quote being "It's not a bug, it's a feature".

As an example, there was a recent-ish bug where settlements were being populated with thousands of horses. When you took an adventurer to that area, the sheer number of horses spawned would lag the game.

Bugs from Normal Games: "The game stutters for six seconds before crashing."
Bugs from Broken Games: "The lighting is weird and the characters have no faces."
Bugs from Dwarf Fortress: "The horses outnumber us. I have seen settlements with a thousand horses to a man. I have seen them in the deepest caverns. They are everywhere. Liberate te ex equus."
