What upcoming games or updates are you excited about?
I can't wait for Bannerlord to come out, it can't get here soon enough. It always seems to be delayed so my hopes of seeing it anytime soon are thin.

All I care about is Cyberpunk 2077.
Once that's out — and I get bored of it — I could die and that would be just alright. I would rest easy.
There are some good cyber punk books out there, lots of atmosphere and description. You can try Neuromancer by William Gibson.
I'm so excited for it. It's going to be a day 1 purchase from me. If it's at all as expansive as TW3, I'll be set for a long time.
I don't usually get hype for games before they come out, but I'm hype as fuck for Cyberpunk 2077.
Yep, same here for the most part. I've never been able to get into the Witcher 3 despite trying several times, but Cyberpunk has a much more interesting setting (imo) and sounds amazing from what I've seen/read so far. I'm trying to temper my hype, though, as it is still likely quite a ways out, and I also got so over hyped for GTA V that it couldn't possibly meet my expectations (besides the lack of single player DLC it pretty much did). It's the main game I'm looking forward to though, so it's a bit difficult haha. I know once they put out a release date I won't be able to help myself :)
Oh wow, that DF update sounds incredible!
For the unawares, 'upcoming' in Dwarf Fortress is executed in cycles ranging from 2-3 years (these are the Big Waits). Generally, these contain major feature updates that break save compatibility and adds a new layer to the simulation. In between major cycles are minor feature releases that last several months to a year; these tend to add new mechanics to small parts of the game, and of course, a myriad of bugfixes.
Timeline of DF update cycles
2007-2008 marked the introduction of the z-axis, a third dimension of space (before it was like Rimworld constrained to 2 axises)
2008-2010 overhauled the material system to use real world values, and added complexity to combat systems among other things.
2012-2014 world activation! History is now simulated as you play, empires rise and fall, wars are waged.
2016-2018 armies arc, players can now send squads out to raze, pillage and invade their enemies, earning the spoils of war.
Right now, we are tantalisingly close to infiltration mechanics, involving spies and secret plots to overthrow your fortress from within. There's many more I didn't cover (such as religion and taverns), but if I talked more about DF we'd be here till dawn, so that's pretty much it.
Fantastic, thanks for sharing!
May I remark on the impressive strides Toady has made over the past year? Only now are we seeing Toady leverage the world activation that he spent years developing post-34.11 into real substantial mechanics. As a result these days we're getting feature after feature (as opposed to trees or beekeeping).
In 2016 I wouldn't have said there was a significant different between legacy 34.11 and DF2016, but DF2018 is in a world of its own in terms of mechanics and complexity. The upcoming Big Wait up to the Myth-&-Magic arc may well be seen as the next Golden Age of DF.
Dude I feel so stupid whenever I try to play DF. The game seems super interesting but I feel like it's almost intentionally designed to be unintuitive. The concept of the game and everything I hear about it makes it sound like a wild ride but man the game does not hold your hand. I get really lost in the seas of ASCII. And even then with a texture pack. Are there any agreed upon essential tutorials out there?
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Quickstart_guide
That's the closest you'll get to a complete tutorial, but the game pretty much requires you to smash your head against it a few times until things start to make sense.
The game is pretty user friendly, it's just incredibly picky about who its friends are. Stick with it and eventually it'll click.
Doom: Eternal. I love the one from 2016 (and the rest of the series) and I'm super excited to see what they can do!
Dragon Age has honestly only been my third most liked IP from BioWare, after Mass Effect and Kotor. But given that ME is on ice right now, and that we will never see Kotor 3 so long as EA doesn't pull its head out of its wallet, I recently replayed the entire Dragon Age trilogy, with all the DLC I could grab. And holy fade, am I hyped now to see what a certain elf is up to. (Especially since he was my favourite NPC in DA:I and I am looking forward to seeing if BioWare can still write characters as well as they used to, making him a villain that I only reluctantly want to fight)
Smash Bros Ultimate!
Even if the dev team fails to appeal to the competitive scene (it would be a shame considering all the effort they're trying to make) the game seems incredibly generous in term of content. The soundtrack alone looks absurdly rich (800+ music tracks for the price of a game? A conventional album would probably cost 15x more)
Ultimate is high on my list as well! Now a barrage of questions:
Do you have a main or do you usually switch around?
What confirmed newcomer are you most excited to see?
What character would you be most excited to see in the future?
Anyone who wants to answer, feel free!
If anyone's interested in my answers:
I usually rotate a small group of characters. For Smash 4, I mostly used Sheik, Captain Falcon, and Zero Suit Samus (I've always loved fast characters, for some reason -- I think I just play very aggressively).
I'm pretty excited to finally see K. Rool after all these years! Donkey Kong 64 was a favourite of mine as a child and I think he could have a pretty unique move-set. There aren't many hulking but comical characters in the game either (aside from Dedede), so he fills a niche personality-wise too. Simon Belmont is one I've always been curious about as well, having never played Castlevania.
Skull Kid has been #1 on my list for like a decade now -- Sakurai and Reggie have been dropping a few hints that he might finally make it into Ultimate so I have high hopes this time! It's mostly for reasons of nostalgia that I'm hopeful, but he also has a mysterious and unsettling aesthetic that few other villains bring to the game.
Skull Kid has quite a variety of abilities that could be incorporated into his fighting-style; physical, magic, transformation-based, etc. so there are several possibilities for a potential move-set.
Regardless, what we've been shown of Ultimate certainly gives me confidence that it will live up to the name! The enormous catalog of stages and music (as you mentioned) alone should make it an outstanding addition to the series.
Judging from the comments pro-Smashers have made about the game as well, this should be the most competitive SSB game since Melee which is also very exciting. I'm not even a particularly competitive player, but the lengths to which the top players push these games are astounding and something to behold.
Edit: fixed up my typos
Ooh, ooh, I wanna participate!
I'll always love Ike. Slow, heavy hitting motherfucker and the side A's(I think it's the side A) are very satisfying to pull off a full charge on an unsuspecting opponent. If I can't choose Ike, I love me some Link (Fierce Deity outfit of course) and I'm trying to git gud with Lucia's countering.
Honestly? I'm not greatly hyped by any newcomers yet. Simon does seem rad, but I'm ecstatic that Snake is back. Not technically a newcomer though
WAAAH
My polar opposite! I've never loved the heavy-hitters but I agree, it is incredibly satisfying to land those frame-shaking smashes where you get the timing perfect. Even getting hit by one can be an utterly glorious moment.
Yeah, the newcomers have not been particularly impressive so far, but it'll be great just to have everyone returning and all the classic stages back in the game.
It's always WAAA, haha. One day Waluigi. One day.
Part of what makes Smash great is definitely the variety. Oftentimes my friends and I played with a house rule where you couldn't use the same character twice in a session. I've never been able to get the hang of Robin -- she's always struck me as one of those highly technical characters (like Shulk, Peach, Snake, etc.) that are deadly in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing. Which isn't me (lol).
Yeah, it hasn't been a bumper crop for newcomers. But at least there's no danger of losing anybody!
I'm embarrassed to say I've never played Paper Mario (despite only hearing amazing things about the games). But I would love to see more truly 2D characters in the game -- I think G&W is currently the only one. Did you have any thoughts about a potential move-set from him?
Unrelated to smash ultimate, but if you're interested in paper mario, 1000 year door runs great on dolphin, which works on pretty much any modern phone or laptop.
Thanks for the tip -- I actually have a GC/Wii set up in my basement and a friend who owns the game, so really the only thing that's stopping me is sitting down and playing it (lol).
Any RPGs you could recommend? I've been looking for new ones to play recently. Any older titles are also appreciated.
Thank you so very much. I will be looking into these.
Halo: Infinite. I really want to see what happens next with the reclaimer saga.
Wait did they confirm it will be out on PC? I missed that. A few weeks ago I picked up a 1 just to play 5.
I just wished the other Halo titles would be ported too. Beyond Halo 1 (and i think 2), none are on PC yet. That has been the largest hurdle to me playing them so far.
Insurgency: Sandstorm is looking like it's going to be good. I just hope the vehicles don't make it too much like BF
edit: grammar
I played the crap out of the original insurgency. I had no idea they were adding vehicles, but I would be surprised if they gave a BF vibe. I think the insurgency devs actively try to avoid making like other AAA shooters as they realize it would turn a lot of players away. Then again, a lot players like BF, sooo... who knows.
Insurgency has provided some of the best tactical semi-realistic FPS co-op gameplay in years, Sandstorm is an instant buy for me.
There's a few games/updates that I'm excited for.
For starters Stone Shard is coming out soon, which is a genre I really love and something about the art style looks really solid and interesting.
Then there's Pathfinder: Kingmaker which is again an RPG, but it feels real old school, just done really well.
Then I'm also pumped for Starfield. I don't know a lot about it, but it's a Bethesda release and I'm very curious to hear more about it.
As far as updates, not sure if you're into Path of Exile? That's a free game that had a massive expansion recently (effectively doubled the amount of content). It has a new update and league coming up with some really interesting mechanics. They are nailing it. Definitely putting Diablo 3 to shame - though there are reports Blizzard is developing Diablo 4. So add that to the list.
Death Stranding! I'm super excited to see more of anything from Kojima.
Super excited for this game, but at the same time, we have so little info on it I wouldn't be surprised if it's pushed back to the ps5 or whatever is after the ps4.
I think the next time we see new Death Stranding footage, it will be a much more complete game. Based on how Kojima works, his projects always go for a baseline gameplay loop first, and then the rest quickly fills itself in.
Ultimate Skyrim 4.0 is high up that list for me.
I'm one of the last few people who is still looking forward to DayZ updates. 0.63 on stable will be lit.
I want dayz to be good again, I'm definitely keeping an ear to the ground for 0.63 to make it to stable so I can come back and discover all the changes that I've missed
I played the mod for thousands and thousands of hours. Best gaming experience that I have ever had.
But the SA just hasn't come close to capturing that. The game looks much better, no doubt. Persistence has always been an issue, desync is still an issue like all other BI titles, and updates are few and far between. .63 looks like a promising update, and I welcome it, but the most I think I see myself playing it is to hop on and check out the changes for a few hours before uninstalling again.
For me I'm much more interested in the survival aspect of the game than what the mod had become later on (Epoch, Overpoch, etc.). However, once 0.63 is in stable the developers are going to allow servers to mod the game, so you'll probably get the experience you're looking for.
Doom Eternal looks like it's going to be incredible. Doom (2016) was awesome, and they are putting more work into improving it in almost every way. I'm a little worried that my GTX 960 won't cut it, though.
Satisfactory looks a lot like a 3D Factorio, though not in the "Minecraft-with-mods" way.
Rage 2 looks like it's got fun combat and doesn't take itself too seriously.
Carefully excited for Ashes of Creation and Crowfall.
I love MMORPGs, but there's so few good ones (i.e. not riddled with p2w microtransactions) on the market right now. At this moment, your only real options are WoW, FFXIV, ESO and GW2.
Now, I couldn't really get into WoW and FFXIV after trying GW2. A new MMO to explore would be welcome, and these two at least look promising!
(and animal crossing for the switch Nintendo plz)
Destiny 2 comes out with its forsaken expansion at the end of this month, I'm pretty excited for it, but I don't know if I'm gong to buy destiny 3, I'll at least wait a month or more when it drops to see if my suspicions are true that they've making disappointment a business model so that they can get fanfare for fixes and "normal" expansions or if it's just bad luck that the launch of D2 was basically a replay of the launch of D1.
Besides that I'm really really excited for Fallout 76, I absolutely love the lore sound Bethesdian franchises, so a new Fallout is exciting for lore expansion. And I really like MMO's but can't get my friends to stick with them, but because this isnt an obvious mmo and because it's Fallout I think it'll last a lot longer in my group
I'm very curious to see what Iron Harvest ends up becoming, I love Scythe (the boardgame) and Jakub Rozalski's world, and I really liked the CoH-type strategy games like Dawn of War so it's got a lot of things going for it.
I'm also looking forward to the latest Stellaris update after seeing the dev diary linked here, I didn't think I'd come back to that game again but the reworks which they announced have me really excited to play it again.
I am really excited for Diablo 3 to release on the switch. I had some major account issues when Diablo 3 was released on the computer and someone kept accessing my account and playing on my characters. I had 2FA set up, I changed passwords, email addresses, security questions, everything I could think of and somehow my account kept getting taken over. I really just quit playing because every few days I wouldn't be able to login, then I would have to go through Blizzard support for the tenth time in six months, they would recover my account but roll it back "a few days" and I would be ten levels lower than where I had last played at. Really ruined the experience for me, since I wasn't able to enjoy the game with my friends. I am really looking forward to getting to experience the game on my switch, because I absolutely loved Diablo 2 when I was a kid.
Freedom Planet 2, can't wait to speedrun it.
Right now it basically is just Smash Bros. Really excited to see how it all turns out.
I would have said Total War 3 Kingdoms, but with how generals are handled, no naval battles, and how CA has handled WH2 with their patch policy, I'm losing quite a bit of interest in it. I'll keep following it, but the spark isn't there right now.
I'm so impatient for Psychonauts 2! I didn't play the first game until 2012, but I love it, and I'm so glad the campaign for the sequel was successful, and I want it in my hands now. Of course, I understand that delays are inevitable, I'd rather have a late-but-good game than an early-but-buggy one, etc.
Also still waiting on Hiveswap Act 2, but I don't have high hopes for that one.
By updates I'm of course referring to games, like the work in progress stellaris update https://tildes.net/~games/53c/stellaris_planetary_rework_part_1
Graveyard Keeper, it might be out now actually. When I have some free time I intend to get it.
Read Dead Redemption 2, the new God of War update which should be out today!? The God of War update adds new game +. Spiderman for ps4. and of course cyberpunk 2077.
Shenmue I and II drop tomorrow for modern systems. Early reviews say the original clunkiness is intact, but this is still a decent spit-shine and ultimately the definitive version of both. I played the originals back in the day and I'm looking forward to returning. The second game is particularly awesome.
Shenmue III, naturally.
Red Dead Redemption II. As long as it's not a shameless microtransaction-fest. The first game was incredible and the trailer for this one looks very promising.
Elder Scrolls VI. I was late to the series, Skyrim was the first I've played. And that game became my life. It was pretty much everything I've ever wanted in a video game. I tried Oblivion and couldn't get into it, so time will tell if Skyrim was just a one-off or if the next will continue to scratch that itch for me.
Cyberpunk 2077 looks like it's going to be amazing. I never finished the Witcher 3. I'm a little intimidated to jump into another CDPR open world, truth be told. This one is going to require a huge time commitment. Who am I kidding, all the games I listed here will be.
Game fatigue has been hitting me pretty heavy the last few years but I'm nonstop excited about the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. I've played the 3rd game religiously, but I only have half fever dream memories of playing levels from 1 and 2 so I'm excited to finish up 1 and 2 and see 3 reimagined. Also the muuusiiic.
The Fortuna update for Warframe will probably pull me back in and maybe I'll be able to break 800 hours. Currently sitting at 709
Currently playing through the newest World of Warcraft expansion, Battle for Azeroth. Really enjoying it although I'm not leveling as quickly as I want because of work.
On the radar is going to be Star Citizen.....if it's ever released. Dragon Age 4 and anything Mass Effect related. I wasn't a huge fan of Inquisition. I enjoyed it but not nearly as much as Origins or even DA2.
I've been meaning to finish Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice but WoW distracted me.
Cyberpunk 2077 is also on my watch list along with Kingdom Hearts 3.
I'm eager for:
The upcoming game I'm currently following the most is Fallout 76. It really seems like it is going to be a great time. I love that they brought in some people that worked on Star Wars Galaxies and Ultima Online because those were the best sandbox MMO's out there and a great source to draw from for inspiration.
Cyberpunk 2077 as many others have mentioned is a game that I have been extremely excited to see since the first announcement. I'm very happy that it's drawing closer.
Hollow Knight is having another free DLC coming out. Looking forward to 100%-ing the game after it releases.
