What are your thoughts on update posts?

These days I was thinking about making UPDATE posts for things I wrote about my personal life. So I typed "update" on the search bar and did not see anything of the sort. Are those discouraged? Was the question simply never asked before? Should I just add more information to the existing post, (without notifying any of the original commenters)?

Back in December, I proposed software changes to handle this better, but you could just try using the software as-is. The topic will likely get some attention due to new comments, though not as much as a new topic if the headline doesn't change. I guess you could change part of the headline manually by editing it?

I believe all commenters should be notified (there might be both an overall and a post-specific toggle for that). The title would have to be changed in order to reflect this new relevant development. I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Probably not. Without notifying people that you added new stuff to your comment, people can't know that happened without checking your comment history and finding that comment again. It's worse than replying to old posts since there are sorts/homepage settings in Tildes that don't sort for post age and will show new posts on old topics, edits don't do that. (and unless we decide to use an algorithm or something to tell apart something like your comment from fixing a typo or rewording, I don't think they really should)

I remember editing this post to include some non-political predictions and I'm not sure if anyone noticed.

As for regularly making new posts on your social life or whatever, I don't mind it, although if you do make a "series"/blog about your life, you should probably tag all your posts into a series name, so if someone does care, they don't have to ignore each and every one of your posts.

Theres's also this, if you missed it: Suppose we make Tildes topics a bit more like little blogs by adding support for "updates?"

Also, I've personally never liked "update" posts - inevitably, the conversation is going to be split in half, making it harder to follow, and also easier to miss context and provide unhelpful advice.

I just wanted to point out that, while discussions about technical solutions are important, I'm actually posting because I wish to know how to proceed right now :P

I personally stand by the second to last paragraph in my reply here that you should come up with a tag to name your series and add to all your posts so anyone can go and filter it out if they don't like update posts.

And I'd also recommend your posts should be structured like this
      • Make the main text post every so often stating what you did at a given period of time you please ("I did this recently") for context.

      • Post a top level comment stating what you want to do in a given period of time you please ("I want/I'm going to do this soon") so people can give advice and such. (Hence why putting context at the top is important.)

      • Post top-level comments on how doing those things is actually going ("I went out and did it, it went like this...") so people can react to what you did.

      However, you said this here:

I think that might work, but most people do not plan to create a post "in episodes" from the start.

I'm assuming this means you want to have a single post you can edit indefinitely as time goes forward instead of adding new comments to a post or creating new posts ever so often like a recurring topic to do the same thing, so my suggestion is off limits.

I believe all commenters should be notified (there might be both an overall and a post-specific toggle for that). The title would have to be changed in order to reflect this new relevant development.

There is an issue to add that as a feature already cited in this thread but it doesn't seem to be particularly high priority, and we've asked before. Without that toggle, I don't think that's possible to do without @-ing everyone who posted.
