Also, I don't hate the look of this thing but I want a bare bones minivan after seeing how much crap is shoved in the newer ones.

Heh. I inherited a 96 Buick Park Avenue from my father in law years ago. What a highly underrated car. Built like a brick sh*thouse as they say, and besides being just slightly smaller than a city bus, that 3.8 V6 got absolutely amazing mileage on the highway - widely regarded as one of the best engines GM ever built. It floated down the road like an air ride sofa on wheels. If you can handle the odd looks for driving a 'grandpa car' its a darn good car. And check the ratings - people who own them LOVE them.

Yep, it’s new enough that it has OBD II, dual airbags, ABS and traction control — so it has all the best features of modern cars but no touchscreens. It’s got enough of the feel of a 1970s boat to get some redneck cred but is head and shoulders a better driver than anything from that time period.

reposting the comment from the article since it seemed like good context:

When Akio Toyoda talks about "young" Japanese executives he isn't talking about people in their 30s, 40's, or even 50's. Toyoda was considered young when he took over Toyota in his late 50's and he was on the fast track because he is the great-grandson of the founder. When you look at Toyota's executive C-suite outside the CEO the youngest is 62 and the oldest is 77.

Japan has the oldest average CEOs in the world. It only has 10% of the world's CEOs but 1/3 of the world's CEOs over the age of 70.

I’ve always thought that there was some connection between the ideal of filial piety and the downright ancient leadership of contemporary Japan w/ the way it is so rare to see an anime that isn’t set in a high school unless you count the ones set in in issekai sekai. Japan makes Danganronpa when the US makes The Belko Experiment. It’s like Japan is trying to hide some terrible secret about being an adult.

It's not an ugly SUV, but I just don't really know who it's for. It feels too pedestrian to be the flashy sort of thing I could see rich youngsters flocking to, and god knows the vast majority of my cohort couldn't afford one anyway. Personally, even if I could afford it, I don't think I'd spend that money on an SUV, but I'm biased.

I don’t know all the ins and puts of the market, but I’m super grateful they chose a more classic aesthetic, as opposed to agressive.

They screwed up hard with the name. The Buick Century was such a failure that the name is tainted forever. Not sure how they didn't realize the other car with this name was so horrible that using that name will not be a good mental association. I towed vehicles and towed more garbage Buicks than anything for a few years there.

The Toyota Century has been in continuous production since 1967

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Century

so if they screwed up the name they screwed up a long time ago. (Note they spell it out phonetically like トヨタ so it really is said “Century” as opposed to the native Japanese word 世紀)

Buick has used the name on and off from 1936 to 2005 for some rather different vehicles

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_Century

My guess is people in Japan have never heard of that Buick in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them have never heard of Buick at all because unlike China the market penetration of American cars in Japan has been, as with Christianity, close to zero.
