... Looks like the main features(?) are some kind of (lidar based) self driving and some new battery tech. edit: personal thoughts, at first glance a nice, electric car from Apple would interest...

Apple’s goal of building a personal vehicle for the mass market contrasts with rivals such as Alphabet Inc’s Waymo, which has built robo-taxis to carry passengers for a driverless ride-hailing service.

Central to Apple’s strategy is a new battery design that could “radically” reduce the cost of batteries and increase the vehicle’s range, according to a third person who has seen Apple’s battery design.

    ...

As for the car’s battery, Apple plans to use a unique “monocell” design that bulks up the individual cells in the battery and frees up space inside the battery pack by eliminating pouches and modules that hold battery materials, one of the people said.

Apple’s design means that more active material can be packed inside the battery, giving the car a potentially longer range. Apple is also examining a chemistry for the battery called LFP, or lithium iron phosphate, the person said, which is inherently less likely to overheat and is thus safer than other types of lithium-ion batteries.

Looks like the main features(?) are some kind of (lidar based) self driving and some new battery tech.

edit: personal thoughts, at first glance a nice, electric car from Apple would interest me as a Tesla that may not have the flaws that make me shy away from Tesla (notably, bad QA, from badly fitting parts to MKBHD's Tesla randomly having its power steering now work (!? that could kill you), and bad supply chain, so if you have parts damage, better get waiting cause it can be months before your car is fixed).

I don't know about the self driving, though. Will it really be in a good place by 2024?

In general, I feel that the EV market is still just not there yet for me, even though I really want one, so seeing new challengers is a good thing imo.

I remain pretty skeptical of these claims of "next level" battery design by companies that have yet to seriously enter the car production process. I definitely welcome newcomers to the electric vehicle market, but as Tesla has shown us, creating an entire car company and scaling it is hard.

I really think the concern over Tesla's QA is overblown. I have no issues with mine.

So do I drive it into the Apple Store at the mall when it needs a repair?

FWIW, in Santa Monica, the Tesla store was just a few doors down from the Apple Store for many years.

I don’t actually know if Apple would address the QA issues. Apple doesn’t manufacture anything on its own aside from the Mac Pros (and I’m not even sure about the latest ones). Everything is contracted out to other manufacturers. I feel like if they had built the kinds of supply chains needed to have production cars on the roads within 5 years we’d know about it.

I could believe they’d license the technology to established manufacturers but I’d be very surprised if they’re able to manufacture themselves. And if they do, I don’t know if you could expect the level of fit-and-finish of even the better economy cars like Honda or Toyota. Car manufacturing is complex and has huge barriers to entry.

All I can think of is that Mac vs. PC cartoon where they're both cars.
