The Basic plan is no longer available for new or rejoining members. If you are currently on the Basic plan, you can remain on this plan until you change plans or cancel your account.
So it looks like you can still switch to it if you have an active plan, you just can't ever change it again/cancel your account or the Basic plan won't be available to you anymore. :/
Woah, does Netflix really cost that much now? I mean, I get the basic plan free with my carrier (don't really use cause I get my content "illegally") but didn't realize that the regular plan was...
Woah, does Netflix really cost that much now? I mean, I get the basic plan free with my carrier (don't really use cause I get my content "illegally") but didn't realize that the regular plan was like $15.49/mo (in USD) and the basic plan being $9.99/mo
Those prices aren't USD, they're CAD, AFAIK. $16.49 CAD for the Standard plan is ~$12.48 USD at the current exchange rate. $9.99 CAD for the Basic plan is ~$7.56 USD.

Our local public library has a plethora of movies you can borrow for free. Now we just "rent" movies from the library and then rip them to Plex. Our local public library system acquires new movies at surprising speed so its not like you have to wait months to get a new release. For example they had the new D&D movie while it was still in theatres.

I keep seeing mentions of Plex and keep wondering if I should try it but I feel it's use to me is limited (1 samba share accessed from 1 instance of Kodi) so I don't need transcoding and the like....

Give Jellyfin a go! It's a lot like plex, but free and open source. Easy to set up too. I must have at least 2TB of movies, music, etc. on there, and it fetches all the metadata automatically

Idk if you could call it overkill, but plex does have a free version. It just comes without some feeatures. And if you decide you want those features (off the top of my head I think they are hardware transcoding, open subtitle downloading, and the ability to watch movie trailers, among others) you can just buy the pass when it goes on sale. Which is pretty often.

Discord had similar changes recently. Basic Nitro plans now offer Custom emojis and 50mb uploads only. All other features are now standard Nitro exclusive which is 3x the Basic Nitro prices.

This change essentially ensures we’ll never go back. It‘s like they are punishing anyone who left because they didn’t like the policy change but were considering coming back to the platform.
Cancelled my Netflix subscription two weeks ago in protest of the password sharing policy. Thought I would miss it but I really don't. It's liberating to not feel like I needed to watch something...

Will I ever go back? Probably only for the new season of Stranger Things or Squid Game. But even then it's a 50-50 thing.
I just signed up today from the USA on my desktop. The Basic plan was not visible, but if I clicked a choice at the bottom I could see the plan that Canadians can no longer buy....

Yeah I know that the prices were CAD, I went to check the US counterpart and that's how I got $15.49 in USD as a regular plan

Man. That $100 lifetime plex pass I bought a decade ago is looking more and more like a better deal.

Oh yeah. That's another one. Love that one, didn't realize it was pass exclusive tho (I've had pass for so long I forget what is tbh).

Perhaps USA-Americans are next to get funneled into either ads or an expensive plan.
