I'm not against different takes on Trek but there's something about the tone here that really prickles my Spidey sense in the wrong ways, despite Robert Picardo's presence.

I hope this isn't true, but outside of SNW and Lower Decks, that seems to be the way its going.

quick edit: I really like Holly Hunter... but more when she's spooky like in Top of the Lake

Came here from /r/startrek. To some, 68 seconds of footage and 3 seconds of cadets shouting with a frown were enough to assert that this non-existent show is fascist propaganda. There are thousands of possible contexts for that scene. Also, that could be establishing something that will be deconstructed in the following episodes. Respectfully, I'll reserve the right to not have strong opinions on things that do not yet exist.

You are pretty brave to participate in that group. Places like that are where the stereotypes of fans, particularly sci-fi fan groups come from.

That is one of the best subs on the website, to be honest. Which isn't saying much, I admit.

I think most of the original mod team left after Reddit shut down API access back in 2023. Since then the subreddit has gone noticeably downhill.

I get that it's a fresh, new take on Trek. But I will still ask the same thing I do every time a new Trek show comes out. Who wants this?

I would say that a soap opera built around young attractive actors in an academy/school setting is a tried and true formula.

I'm not saying that I will like it or that Star Trek fans will like it, just that it is a tried and true formula for moderately successful "TV" shows.

I too want more Trek, but everything since Discovery is not remotely close to what I want. I will continue to be an old man yelling at clouds about this as I watch my favourite universe collapse into a garbage pile.

          "Stop messing with the Klingons!".

Discovery and the new generation of spinoffs had a few good episodes capturing my imagination, but something about those spinoffs weren't quite right for me. I liked the first Kelvin Universe movie, but I couldn't even finish the second one.

I thought Star Trek Axanar or a professional version of Star Trek Continues was/is the way to go. Alternatively take the camp out of Strange New Worlds, make Pike into a strong character, and have more episodes showing us the young Kirk on the way up.

Same. While not perfect, it was in my opinion the perfect way to soft reboot. You say everything up to this movie is canon and this thing happened that fractured the timeline and now here we are in a new reality. Perfect way for writers to go wild and tell new and interesting stories! Again, the movie was only okay but I was excited about the potential.

So they immediately waste that potential by just retelling the Khan story. I could have lived with the ugly Klingons if the stories were good. I think it would have been funnier if they brought back TOS human like Klingons. Instead we got neither.

I enjoyed the slight skewer of the Discovery Klingons in the finale of Lower Decks. I was also on board with the Kelvin timeline, and even read all the associated comic books (a lot of which were reworking TOS episodes). 2 and 3 were definitely worse, but I'd be there for a 4th if it ever actually happens.

I had no idea they made comics. That seems neat, although again shows a lack of imagination.

Definitely some lack of imagination, but also the old, what will sell? dilemma. The most recent runs (original universe) filled in a gap in the timeline post Nemesis but before Picard. Used a lot of characters in the toy box, including Scotty, Sisko, and a lots of others. Even had Shaxx from Lower Decks.

That timeline would be more interesting to me, although not my normal media of choice.

Starfleet Academy was a spinoff pitch that Gene Roddenberry himself had his hands in before it was shelved for TNG, so the idea has been kicking around for a while. Star Trek with young folks and relationship drama is executive catnip, and I'm surprised that it didn't see air sooner.

Honestly it had me interested, especially it being set at the end of the (at least main) timeline rather than another prequel. It'll depend if it hits the right notes but everything does.
