The Discovery Global part of the business could have wound up being a tough sell, especially if no one was privately calling about (wild conjecture on my part). Getting within the ballpark for both pieces may have been more appealing than dragging it out. Netflix didn’t need it, but Paramount’s desperation may have given concessions not made public (more wild conjecture). We have Paramount+, and it mostly stinks. They need something to get competitive.
Now, the politics part is a whole other thing. I do think there’s shadiness involved (who knows how much). I also, however, think that David wants more toys in his toybox and daddy is willing to buy them.

If a bunch of Tildes people were into it, there's good community and competition features built in. it's slick on both browser and mobile app.

I finally finished Moby Dick last year after trying to read it 3 times and giving up really early on. 2x speed usually works to stop me from mental wandering much, though I have to slow it down a bit depending on the reader's accent. If you're in the US with a decent library system nearby, Libby and Hoopla tend to have quite a bit you can check out for free.

The Truth was much easier to access, and it was interesting enough to get through the initial confusion. (I know that dropping people into the action is a very popular way of doing things, but I frequently would like a little more explanation of setting and characters at the start!)
Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and many of the thought experiments about what it might have meant to create the idea of a news cycle, the effects of moveable type on society, etc. Having the fantasy setting kept it extra interesting, but I think I was, likely intentionally, much more keyed in on what news means and does versus the general setting in Ankh MorPork and the Fantasy characters.
I don't think I want to read all the books, but I'm happy to be recommended a handful of other "one-offs" from the Discworld series.

Going a little sideways, fix your hearts or die is also basically the message (and, I would argue, invitation) of the biblical prophets and Jesus. Personally, as the most privileged type of white man in the history of the world (I think I check all the boxes except being born to a millionaire), moving more and more into what this article talks about has been frequently driven by how I interpret "biblical manhood" - laying down what I was given for the benefit of others, as Jesus did. The article is right - thinking about all people as actual people does tend to make community and relationships happen more easily.

I’ve been trying to decide what to do with it while working through free exclusives in the Plus library.
My fear with this month’s book is that I’ll enjoy it, then not have easy listening access to the rest of the Discworld series, lol.

Would you switch it to @jona37an for the next one post? Thanks!

That is an Angry Bird. Look like we can go underwater. I suspect I'll go Waves, but it's too early to commit.
