So far this season has been a bit disappointing. I still like the show, but I have some notes about this episode and the series in general:

    • I'm not a huge fan of holodeck episodes already. I think if someone wants to write a show that isn't about Star Trek stuff, maybe they should write an episode for some other show instead of making a holodeck ep. It might as well just be an episode about a dream that one of the crew had.

    • This episode had some cute easter eggs making fun of how Kirk talks, and how Riker would put his leg over a chair to sit on it, and the retro 60s stuff was kind of neat. But in general it seems like some of the writers and actors wish they were on a different show.

    • I guess Pike's character was supposed to be like Gene Roddenberry, but he looked like Issac Asimov. Not sure what that is supposed to represent. Maybe an amalgam of the creator and the famous authors who worked on TOS?

    • I don't understand Spock. He acts more than half human and quite immature when it comes to his handling of relationships. It's cool that they want to make him different than TOS Spock, but he seems barely Vulcan now.

    • Uhura seems to be sort of a Mary Sue character who is too awesome at everything.

    • I guess Scotty needs to have an arc, but his personality seems too different than TOS Scotty. He seems extremely traumatized and unsure of himself.

    • This is just an observation, not a criticism: I think the actors in the show have some talents that they wouldn't normally be able to show in a sci fi show, so they make episodes that highlight this. This may include dancing the tango or singing.

    • In previous episodes, one of the arcs is that Captain Batel is dying from a Gorn infection and we need to rush and find a cure so we do crazy things. But we've already had episodes about how you can put somebody in the transporter buffer indefinitely while you search for a cure. This is a typical sci-fi trap where you have to nerf previous abilities to make a plot.

I feel like they are building up to that, there have been some hints at future Scotty so far.

His usual interactions with people were to give inflated estimates ( low confidence ), and to tell underlings to just do the task no matter how long, difficult it is. That and he is an alcoholic.

Interesting to make this the episode they're giving away for free. Season premiere was a second part of a two parter, the followup had the Spock-Chappel follow through, and the episode after that was a followup on a Klingon war plotline and a bit action heavy, so I guess that the Holodeck episode is the crowd pleaser. I thought it worked as another Star Trek episode about Star Trek and kinda wanted more of the "Last Frontier" in the moment, but appreciate it as a behind the scenes exploration. Yet another Spock romance is a little grating, but the show is gonna to show, and they can take their time getting to James Kirk's first mission since we know that's where they're going and how long they have to get to it.

I saw an article today about this episode on Variety. How ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Used a Murder Mystery to Pay Homage to Shatner, Roddenberry and the Original Series: ‘We Didn’t Have Any Adult Supervision’

It confirms my suspicion about how the people working on the show don't really like doing Star Trek.

According to director (and tenured “Star Trek” veteran) Jonathan Frakes, the cast and crew of “Strange New Worlds” — including production designer Jonathan Lee, costume designer Bernadette Croft and cinematographer Maya Bankovic — relished the opportunity to leave the Starfleet uniforms and phasers at home.

“Everybody was so thrilled to be off the fucking space ship, out of their space suits,” Frakes says. “Jonathan, Bernadette, Maya and I, we all leaned into it; there was no stopping the four of us. We were on location in this gaudy mansion, for six days and we didn’t have any adult supervision.”

I'm not furious about this or anything, but I think people tuning into the show want to see some people on a fucking space ship.

By the way, they're planning on having an episode next season where the crew are puppets. So yeah.

I hope I don't seem like a complete grouch about this, but I'm finding this mildly annoying for some reason.

I find myself cautiously optimistic about the puppet thing. I mean, I did enjoy when Angel did it.

    like badly written fan fiction

The Geneva Convention should be amended to forbid "holosuite"/fantasy themed episodes. They are space explorers - THAT is the fantasy. Should probably make "nebula", "gas cloud", and various *space fields episodes punishable too.

    Grrrrrrrr!

Yup, exactly my thought as well. They were never my favorite episodes but have been a staple from at least TNG to DS9 and Voyager and this fit the mold perfectly. If anything, Strange New Worlds is much more like classic Star Trek than the other modern offshoots, and I quite like it overall.

If anything, they put a bit of a spin on it, although one that feels a little bit predictable. If we do want to talk about how the writing could be better, then ... relational development here feels a bit forced.

But frankly, for anyone who wants to complain about bad writing. I'd like you to watch the first season of TNG, not to mention TOS itself. The latter is something this episode actually has some fun with, having some fun with itself so to speak.
