"If regret could be harvested, Russia would be the world's fruit basket."
Another 30 years and little has changed!
Ivanova leans so hard into the Russian stereotype but I've always felt it was well done. Maybe that is however just my 90s American impression
Certainly better than some other shows of that era. As much as I love Stargate the stereotypes there were a bit much.
I think being set in the future really helped, and JMS was/is coming from a progressive lens. Being Russian (and Jewish) is a cultural identity for Ivanova, but it doesn't "matter" to the Earth Alliance otherwise. She's just a citizen of Earth. Being from Mars or another colony would be a bigger distinction
Were they really? I think the way in which they were done was a bit too silly and not sinister/selfish enough. Looking at Russia today, I think the stereotypes were too kind if anything. As a previously invaded eastern european I am russophobic as fuck, but I don't think I'm wrong.
This is not anyone's favorite episode but it's still a decent episode of TV even though it's low on the B5 scale!
I tend to like bottle episodes, not entirely sure why. I guess it gives the writers a chance to play around with the universe they've created and explore it a bit for themselves, without affecting the larger plot arcs. This episode also has pretty good fight choreography (well, maybe except the ending where they're just taking turns punching each other in the face, that was a bit silly).
I do enjoy the bottle episode, it's something I miss about modern TV season, everything has to be plot heavy and while IMO B5 gets much closer to that than a lot of shows did then, there's still room for slower episodes that build character moments throughout.
