I think JMS claims he wasn't influenced by Tolkien but I don't believe him. The Wizards are leaving Middle Earth rather than meddle or be used. Un-wizard like as far as gandalf is concerned but the blue wizards do fuck off.

The Drazi ritual being so, totally, stupid to human sensibilities is also great.

And once again, Mollari gets a dark prophecy...

To give him credit he heavily references a LOT of fiction and history but he understates how much the Third Age of Mankind is influenced by Tolkien.

JMS has stated that people misunderstand the similarities between the two different stories.

He often says that B5 is "greatly informed by" but "is not" any particular preceding work of fiction or history.

Hard to say you aren't influenced by Tolkien when quoting his work directly in the show!

“Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger.”

I overstated his statements a bit, and there's obviously a direct reference here but it's literally everywhere!

And I think that's a good thing. Even Tolkien borrowed much from his studies of folklore and mythology.

Oh I make no criticisms, I'm a huge fan of both! I just think he protests too much. (And it's possible he's said otherwise elsewhere; I've read most of the Lurker's Guide and not seen him say...

I love Babylon 5 and I love Tolkien. Both borrowed from a lot of other stories in excellent ways
