Unfortunately the US phone market is a bit pathetic for choice at the moment. Would definitely check out Motorola as well since they're usually pretty solid but they don't have SD card slots. Would definitely check if Chinese phones can be used on your network (and if you're comfortable using them) since the majority of options with a card slot will be Chinese.

I think I read somewhere that if a battery is designed to withstand a certain number of cycles of charges it's also exempt, which Apple and certainly other big brands certainly qualify for.

Yeah I think the hardware is solid. Had no issues with my S8 and S22U in day to day use. Only cracked my S22 Ultra when I violently dropped it on concrete and the back shattered.

From what else I could gather on GSMArenas phone finder, you're mainly limited to MId-ranger models from Sony, Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Tecno. I'd say it's worth exploring Samsungs models as I have no experience with the final 3 brands. I'd be a bit weary about Samsungs though, they've never really aged well in my experience with the S8 and S22 Ultra

Yeah I don't find them that useful for writing beyond just proofreading and perhaps organizing my writing a bit better. I'm a bit of a rambler so I'll go off on related tangents very easily and my writing will often just end up as a bunch of vaguely related statements put together into one long paragraph. Since at my job we're encouraged to use AI for everything, I've had moments where I'll put my long rambling response to something into the AI and ask it to word things a bit better and more professionally. In the 5 months I've been doing this, I've yet to just directly take the AI output to respond to someone. I don't really know how to describe it but the writing just feels soulless. Usually with writing, I can usually understand the writer's intent and their thought process as I go through a piece from top to bottom. But with AI writing, it just feels like words on a screen. I don't really know how to articulate this better haha.

Your comment got me thinking and I wonder if the Freeform app might be able to work a bit here? It's a very different format than a Notion or Word Doc but:

    • It lets you collaborate with multiple people natively
    • Supports versioning of boards
    • You can link between boards (simply copy the link to a board and it becomes a deep link to the board within the app)
    • Can embed a variety of things as its a whiteboard
    • Syncs across your Apple devices (probably the main downside since your non-Apple devices are out of luck)
    • Runs as a program on your computer, not a web app nor is it Electron

The big caveat is that you NEED Apple devices to use it though so it'll be a non-starter for many.

Funnily enough Apple's own documentation for App Clips gives the example of being used by a restaurant to let you order food quickly with a native-ish experience. Android also had something similar called Android Instant but Google finally killed it off at the end of last year (as you'd expect) in part due to low usage so I can't imagine App Clips get much use either.

Recently been rewatching Game of Thrones. I watched the first season and didn't realize how almost binge-able that season is. Lots of great setup of the main families and how they'll eventually interact. I'd also forgotten how much nudity there is in GoT. I remember there being a decent amount but wasn't expecting about a third of the first episode of the entire series to have it haha.

I relate to this hard. I am a bit more free-spirited than you but I prefer just giving myself a generic guideline on what to do on each day, plan out how to get there, and then I fill in the gaps based on my own vibes during that day. It makes it hard to travel with my friends and family sometimes because they expect rigid schedules but figure out transport during the trip.

I do love solo traveling though, its such a freeing way to travel.

Yeah that's the big downside of any new platform in the modern day. We're pretty entrenched in the Windows, macOS, and, to an extent, Linux trifecta of main PC platforms. It's the same with iOS/Android. Think Huawei recently introduced their own new mobile phone platform, HarmonyOS that's been doing decently well and even it includes an Android compatibility mode to run Android apps alongside apps developed for Harmony.

Having tried Samsung's new DeX experience, it's still pretty rough. It tries to bring some of the laptop paradigms like virtual desktops and stuff but it's still really clunky. I haven't tried the new Pixel desktop UI yet though DeX is built on top of it so no clue how good it is.

I look forward to seeing posted on here in 3 years that this product line has joined the Google graveyard.

Yeah as hopeful as I am for Google on this, I can't help but feel like this will die quick. I feel like outside of the Pixel phones, Google has had pretty short visions for their mobile consumer hardware. They seem to expect big success from the outlook instead of letting things marinate for a few years and then fall flat on their face.

Cool to see this finally announced, certainly an Interesting product line since it's now got some serious competition with the MacBook Neo. I truly do wonder what the price point will be. Cool to see the glowbar return from the Pixelbooks, always loved the little Google motif.

Interested in seeing how this new platform fares. They say it's "built on the Android stack" so I assume it's built off the Android 16/17 desktop mode with a lot of ChromeOS influence on things. Google also mentioned an AI mouse pointer which sounds mildly useful. Its not an AI moving your mouse pointer but an AI reading what's under your pointer and giving you suggestions system wide which I guess can be useful if you're constantly context switching.

I think this type of twisted news is pretty common across all big tech companies. They will put out an announcement saying X but new sources will twist it into saying Y. Not to absolve Meta of any wrongdoing here but a spokesperson mentioned that the feature had very little usage so it didn't make sense on their end to maintain it, which seems reasonable to me.

Been listening to mainly jazz fusion this week, specifically from Masato Honda, a member of T-Square and was a part of The Seatbelts for the Cowboy Bepop soundtrack. Also snuck in some old rock from my childhood which brought some nostalgia back.

    Highlights:

Still Frame - Trapt (2003): I know this song from Project Gotham Racing 2 on the original Xbox. I didn't understand the lyrics as a kid but listening to it now in my 20s, I relate to a lot of the emotions in the song. Great track to race on the streets with.

Hokago Wa Nichiyobi (放課後は日曜日) - Masato Honda (2000): I honestly heard this and thought it was from Mario Kart and didn't realize it was something entirely different until I'd checked my phone. I knew Mario Kart incorporated a lot of jazz fusion over the years but it didn't hit me until I heard this.
