Yay! It would be great to see a healthy creators community built here. I'm certainly willing to be patient in the name of doing it right.

It takes a fair amount of effort and suffering complaints to police HQG as an OC-only subreddit. For years it was approved-posters only to alleviate that. Now that the mod team is larger and the popularity of HQG has grown, the notion of going back to approved-only comes up from time to time when the inevitable "why did my post get removed" modmail arrives.

I know it will take a heavy amount of moderation which I'm not sure would be a good fit for Tildes.

Despite how easy Google and others may make it seem, implementing search is a large undertaking for a webdev and requires constant tuning and maintenance (I know this from first-hand experience). I think some sort of save/favorite functionality is easier to achieve than full-on search. What I'm proposing may serve as a middle-ground until the time dedication for real search possible.

A lot of the time I'll see a discussion I don't have the chance to participate in the moment I see it. It would be nice to be able to "save" it so I could revisit later without having to hunt. Similarly, being able to do the same for comments would be handy for when someone links to something I want to follow-up on or fully explore when I have more time at hand.

Even if only implemented in localStorage per client, I feel it would be a useful addition.

I came here from Sacramento where encampments have been a reality since the 80s at least. I don't know that there can be just a single solution or even just a dozen solutions. We in the bay area see this as a fairly recent turn of events, but it's been a reality of California (and other parts of the US) for a very long time. At this point, I fear the problem may be more systemic and cultural than people realize.

"hey cashier, know anyone willing to teach someone new to DnD on how to play?"

I think you might be surprised how receptive they would be. Every game shop hosts events the cashier should be willing to point you to even if only for doing their job. Most folks that work at game and comic shops do it because they love games and comics.

Of course, this may not apply if said cashier is super-busy. If so, wait for a lull.

In your first paragraph you hit on something I think we both agree on: context is a major factor. I've tried to keep my parts of the discussion general because reddit is not the only example of sites facing such issues by a long shot, but I agree that there have been some issues with its moderation tools.

Those aside, every moderation action also has the possibility of behind the scenes consequences. Should someone in a righteous mood garner multiple actions, there's a good chance they'll message or file a support issue to complain. For every one of those you rebuff or ignore, there's a chance you gain a user with griefing as a hobby. Even large sites with seemingly deep pockets such as Facebook, Twitter, and yes Reddit have trouble staffing support/QA teams with the skill and patience to handle their volume of support contact.

What it comes down to in my opinion is that sites need to weigh such public facing (and possibly disrupting) features as they grow. For the vast majority of sites, it's terribly impractical due to all of these accumulating factors until they get to the kind of scale to support it.

It would be tough to balance that without creating a place for drama aggregation or rubbernecking in my opinion. In my couple of decades of experience as a web developer, I'm constantly amazed at what users can find their way to and popularize.

That said, I would like to see a www that could handle such transparency. My point isn't that such a thing is bad or not an ideal to strive toward, but that it's simply not practical.

For many actions and with a more humane humanity, I'd agree. Aside from the possible legal/jurisdictional things, there are a great many users on the Internet that would still see that as censorship and/or silencing them. It's a tough call and I understand why many sites opt to not publish such things, use some form of "deleted" placeholder, or a mix. The resulting griefing of being more forward can be brutal.

Logging removals publicly is not really feasible. In the cases of users with spammy or malicious intent (linking to shock sites and such for example) you don't want those links surviving for your good users to possibly fall prey to. There may also be legal issues depending on the content and removal reasons. The latter is why things such as Warrant Canaries exist.
