As someone who natively speaks two languages and know few more to varying degrees, oh the horrors I hope not!! Languages are a human invention that carry a ton of hidden traditions and history behind each......

I grew up in Hong Kong, where we speak Cantonese. We have our own culture that will be lost if the language is lost: whole constellations of puns wiped out, entire legacies of swear words and dirty jokes gone, historical link to how certain thoudand year old poetry should be read, the fingerprints of loan words from different migrant groups that became part of us all going poof.....please no.

On a less serious note: I always love seeing this one in the wild, because the middle character means something to me (ಠ益ಠ) -- means something like, of benefit, nutritious, profitable. So even when it's an angry face it's a kind of righteous anger lol

What are some of your favorite STP books? :)

One of the off he beaten path ones for me: Miss Felicity Needles The World Of Poo.

In the north american Protestant culture, it's easy for children to be raised wrong, their humanity and individual will and worth, broken with fear and shame. I really appreciated the wholesome look into the world of pop, how everyone poops, how a child's curiosity and passion should be fostered, and what supportive adults quietly pulling strings behind the scenes (distinctive from talk is cheap fake friendliness) look like.

While this is sorely needed for all kids home schooled or public schooled, the horrors of Canadian residential schools have taught us that it is very easy to cover up abuse by determined monsters with good social engineering skills.

    curriculum

Free for downloading anywhere online, and also those horrible Christian curriculum people sell lots of these for money

Academic testing (not necessarily every year in elementary, but definitely every year for high school) to make sure the kid is getting a reasonable education -- there do need to be waivers here for students with disabilities / medical issues / etc, where success wouldn't be expected in a school. If none of those apply and the kid is failing by a wide margin, there needs to be a mechanism to either require changes from the parents or trigger Child Protective Services involvement for educational neglect, and then CPS could have the authority to require the child to enroll in school.

And this is exactly the thing the horrible Christian legal defense people named in the article exist to resist.

Source, I am a Christian homeschooling parent and from the first year, I've been to their conferences and "trade shows" aplenty and been in lots of those circles. The legal defense fund people are basically grifters at worst and fear monger money changers at best. It's a good idea to check up on kids, public and home schooled, but public teaching unions will resist it as hard as home schoolers.

It all comes down to a breakdown of trust. If the premise is "we don't believe you are doing a good job and we're willing to threaten job loss / removal of children from your home", the conversation is a non-starter.

the problem with homeschooling is that there aren't people making sure your requirements are being met.

I live in a country where public school parents really resist testing of their children as well so this is a problem that can happen in any setting.

Kids in my local public grade 5/6 were reviewing the alphabet this year. Absolutely good parents should provide the best education they can afford, whether that's public or home or distance or e-learning.

Thank you for your "insider" insight

. A lot of articles and experiences I read about focus heavily on how parents mistreated/sheltered/lied to their children

Exactly. There are plenty of public school educated children whose parents abused them and hit them and starved them and deprived them of autonomy or real education. Abusive parents are abusive, whether home educated or not, whether religious or not.

For every one home schooled weird kid I could point to 5 or more public schooled weird kid.

Were you among the sea of flautists in your band?

ugh, you know it. I was 11 when I joined the high school band as a brand new musician, and I really wished our band teacher had been honest from the beginning and just told me "anything you want but flute" :( he didn't have the heart to tell a kid what to pick, so like an idiot I picked the instrument my friends were already playing. Sigh. I would have been very happy with the timpani or with the trumpet boys at the back. i think even if I had picked oboe it would have been nicer.....

"Flute's nice, but you know which instruments gets an amazing solo in this piece?" kinda thing.

so how did you become a career musician? : ) did your family try to talk you out of it? did you always know you were going to be a conductor? what is your favourite instrument?

it might be worthwhile to see if your local city's orchestras or chamber or opera groups have free or greatly discounted concerts like this one from Toronto's coc

I find that "discovering" things is easier in "meat space": where I can flip through a cd leaflets, or when there's a physical programme in hand and the musicians talk about their pieces and give some background before they perform.

I suspect a lot of us learned some kind of instruments as kids.....I played piano and flute as a kid but the cello is my chosen instrument (that I have neglected)

I was a band kid myself and although it's not technically classical (is it???), I am still very partial to Gustav Holst's first and second and planet suites, Percy grainger's Irish tune from county derry , and stuff like that that we used to play :')

Hey question for you: I play a lot of games and really like the Civilizations series, with music composed by Christopher Tin. Would his music be considered classical? Is it a period or a style or "when played by orchestral instruments"? What about say, rock music played by orchestras, then what is it called?

Was not aware that's a thing! :D what kind of things have you made before? I'm sort of crafty but in recent years it's mostly been very practical stuff like visible and invisible mending, woodworking and outdoor stuff. I do sew and have a machine so quite interested to know what kind of gear people make.

Sounds like bags and shorts and hammocks for example :)

That sounds like quite the (mis)adventure you've had in recent years. I find it's very difficult to feel well when I'm physically not 90%

Families are great huh :) a therapist recently told me that I'd one is having a bad day, sometimes even being able to open the blinds and lean back into bed is well done.

But Itsuki is my favorite character outside of the shipping business of the shounen :D I just super love her for her artistic dedication, her hijinks and outspoken attitude, and her sensitivity despite appearances. It's a whole....crisp attitude with strong as steel inner strength that I love 8D

I never played with the original ASCII but my husband did, and I loved seeing the tiny 'c' everywhere. He got me a graphics patch but even then it was wiki alt tab all day. You might be glad to know that the steam version still requires wiki for best avoidance of early FUN.
