There are browser-based gallery "apps" you can use on your own pics in your own storage which will also do that kind of AI - but locally, so no data is sent to any server anywhere. I think in that context I really like the idea. After all, machine learning based computer vision is an amazing tool and it does not have to be used exclusively for creepy or even evil purposes.

Delayed_Apex Yeah exactly that. When you're in a motorised vehicle, you have an engine, you can get going in fractions of a second with a push of the foot or a twist of the wrist. Of course it needs to be done with care, I'm not advocating people should be running out into the street blindfolded, but motorised traffic needs to be dethroned from the priority position it has in most countries. And yes, I do ride a motorcycle myself so I am "impacted" by that too.

I will keep using it as long as my user experience is good enough to justify it, and then I won't. I'm very happy that I keep seeing more and more alternatives around, including the fediverse of course, for all its shortcomings.

Delayed_Apex I guess to some extent all of it is a side-effect of history and it's hard to compare countries directly. The rest of Europe mostly has a semi-jaywalking law where you're supposed to use things like zebra crossings if you are within a reasonable distance of one. (Which btw I still oppose on principle. If it is close enough that it is indeed convenient people will use it anyway, if it isn't then it's wrong to punish people for not going out of their way for cars)

Delayed_Apex I mean, yeah... but also kind of no. The UK for example simply does not have that concept at all, and I wouldn't say large business interests aren't well and truly entrenched in government.I mean, yeah... but also kind of no. Delayed_Apex If the situation wasn't so bleak for pedestrians, the concept of "jay-walking" wouldn't even need to be a thing to begin with...If the situation wasn't so bleak for pedestrians, the concept of "jay-walking" wouldn't even need to be a thing to begin with...

Comment on In Moorhead, a rare opportunity to hit reset button on entire downtown in ~design
Delayed_Apex Yeah let me make a prediction right here: this still looks pretty awful, and while it might end up containing a few successful businesses it will not at all be that kind of "walkable downtown"...Yeah let me make a prediction right here: this still looks pretty awful, and while it might end up containing a few successful businesses it will not at all be that kind of "walkable downtown" that non-North-American people would think of. It still has cars everywhere, made even dumber by the fact that there are two massive parking lots right next to the development - why can it not be developed as an extended pedestrian area then? Is walking from the parking lot to the corner shop too much? Instead, of course cars need to not only be able to drive through it (note that obviously they'd be driving on the wide, fast main road anyway), they even need street parking.
Honestly, it makes my head spin when I read what the theoretical idea is, and then the actual proposal looks like one of the bad new developments in the UK... with quite a lot of additional parking.

Delayed_Apex As long as it comes with a push to improve public transport too - even things like prioritising buses wherever possible -, this is definitely the right way to go.As long as it comes with a push to improve public transport too - even things like prioritising buses wherever possible -, this is definitely the right way to go.

I'm no biologist, but I seem to remember that the air you exhale still contains a good bit of oxygen, and it's the build-up of CO2 that's going to kill you before the oxygen truly runs out. I think. If I remember that correctly, there would still be a decent bit oxygen in the air.
Man just thinking about this situation is pretty horrific.

Delayed_Apex Something the doomsday preppers usually forget about. How are you going to teach the kids how amazing the world was before the Glorb came and transformed it into a wasteland....Something the doomsday preppers usually forget about. The problem I see with "stoicism" as it is often applied is that it is used as a cover-up to not care about things, or for general cynicism. Some stuff should affect you, because it isn't right - and not only when it directly impacts you personally. Yes, you can go through life saying "oh well" to pretty much everything, but I strongly believe ethical action comes from an internal drive to want to see more good and less bad in the world. And that drive is severely dulled if you spend most of your time telling yourself that it is better if you just don't let things affect you.
Some guy I know started a whole charity because he couldn't stand seeing people he met as a doctor go hungry. He could have decided - like, let's be honest, most of us - that it was not worth getting aggravated about it, but he didn't, he let it affect him, and the world got a tiny bit better because of it.
