I would say that, in general, democrats need to stop being led by the nose into the trap of this one sided civility requirement. Somewhere along the line democrats even managed to make consistently falling for this ruse a point of pride ("They go low, we go high!"). Ultimately it's just a transparent manipulation tactic - you're inviting your opponent to a game where they're they only ones that have to play by any rules.

I think it's a pretty common experience to see numerous threads on reddit unnecessarily locked by mods that clearly just wanted to feel powerful. The point of having moderators is to moderate the discussion, not shut it down. The obvious response to seeing some objectionable content in an otherwise productive discussion is to remove the comments and penalize the posters, but it absolutely seems like the default response across most of reddit has become to lock the entire thread because "you guys can't play nice".

It's a sort of overmoderation and undermoderation - an abuse of moderator powers for the purpose of gratifying the moderator rather than actually bettering the community.

Yuengling, definitely. It's the one beer that I don't think I would ever get sick of drinking for the rest of my life with nothing else. There's a lot of beers that are really good, but you've got to consider the long game here. Yuengling is a good choice for this because it's perfectly inoffensive in addition to being awesome on its own.

What I really love about this whisper comment idea is its potential use for situations where, say someone mentions that it's their birthday. Instead of having to scroll through 40 replies of "Happy Birthday!" it could be condensed to something that people could really dig into if they really want to see each one specifically, but otherwise the sentiment is there without detracting from the user experience in viewing the thread. The same applies for when situations call for a flood of "Fuck cancer", "Thank you for your service", and various similar comments that people probably aren't ever going to feel comfortable tagging as "noise".

I was actually trying to think of the other side to this - so one fear is that terminally ill patients might be targeted for experimental treatments that these patients might have been better off not risking? It's rough - I feel the core concept here - letting people choose what treatment they want, even if the treatment isn't safe - is moving in the right direction in terms of freedom and personal autonomy. I wonder if there's a way to regulate how these terminally ill patients can be contacted regarding experimental treatments that might mitigate this problem. But than I also wonder if it's even relevantly possible to take advantage of a terminally ill patient with experimental treatment - obviously they'll only be resorting to that attempted manipulation as a last resort in either case, where they almost by definition have nothing to lose.

I'm genuinely excited for this - I feel like there's a good chance that this show will be able to capture the magic that Futurama did just because the absurdity of the setting will allow for them to do basically anything, which was a big part of what made Futurama so special. I'm surprised there doesn't seem to be a much bigger hype around Disenchantment given the cult following that Futurama has.
