You're probably right. I deleted my post since in the cold light of day it's probably best not to link the various domains together let alone to a username.

I'll leave filedump.net and thiscomputer.info behind though, since they are already linked to my username.

filedump broke a while ago in terms of uploads, but I've left it online since there's literally decade (almost decades!) old uploads there that are still linked on forum posts and I'd hate to see those forum posts become useless because all the pictures it's referencing have gone.

I loved this album. I believe I bought it after hearing "Flower" as used in Gone in 60 Seconds, and went on a bit of a Moby discovery. I ended up with pretty much everything he ever released. "Go", "Hymn", and "All That I Need Is To Be Loved" being some of my favorite tracks, though they weren't on Play.

I did however enjoy every track on Play, which doesn't seem to be the case for others in this thread. I listened to it from start to finish on multiple occasions. We had a JVC head unit in our car that would play .mp3 files from a CDR, and Moby's Play was one of the first albums I bought and ripped myself. 18 and Hotel I bought on release and also got plenty of reply value.

Here is the original track sampled in Flower, just for funsies.

I seem to recall buying a Usenet client back in the Windows 3.1 days... Did Netscape have a paid version back in the day? Access to Usenet was via a local university internet provider which provided some limited groups and very low retention.

Still been using Usenet for binaries, but I'd love to see text return. The OG forum, where content was the important component not the pictures, and federation was already a thing.

But Jerboa doesn't seem to get much love at all, despite being what I think would have been one of the first Lemmy apps that appeared?

I've tried a lot of clients (not Sync yet!) on Lemmy and currently like Jerboa the most. So it's got one fan at least.

I use Firefox with the Bookmark Dial plugin. I have a folder called "Quick Dial", and under that a "Work" and "Home" sub-folder. For FF at work I use work, for FF at home I use home. It's all in the name. That way I can just middle click on every thumbnail to open the relevant websites for each location, but dont have the super slow loading times of having the tabs set to auto open.

I guess this means I go through them pretty much daily?

The only other reason I use bookmarks is to force them to show up in Firefox's "Awesome bar" or whatever they're calling it now. Items that are bookmarked show up at the top which makes it easier to get to with keyboard shortcuts. Those I basically "go through" them any time I use the awesome bar to go to a site so I guess I'd notice pretty quick if they stopped working.

Bookmarks are also good for websites I want to use but can never remember the name of. Like Kagi Search. I can never remember the thing when Google and Bing haven't given me what I need, so it's in the bookmarks. Those rarely get looked at except when I'm trying to remember a domain and I'll often search the bookmarks for a description or tag I've given it than anything.

As soon as I see someone post / like / share anything about crypto I immediately assume anything from them in the future is going to be some way to pump the value of their random number generators. It's like MLM, except you don't even get any overpriced makeup, or juice concentrate, or smelly candles or whatever.

A couple of random YouTube finds I feel deserve more recognition:

Juzzie Smith is a one man band which is never going to go mainstream, but there's no way you can listen to something like Jamming without grooving along to it. And Superheros is so wholesome and happy. Then he pulls out a bit of looping with Beautiful Feeling and its chill as all heck. Rise And Shine is something I'd love to have on a trip to the coast if I ever get around to having a holiday heh... Actually I could just listen for him toot away on his harmonica all day tbh.

Speaking of looping, TribalNeed is a master at layering noises until it builds to something amazing. His live stuff is probably the most impressive... the little mistakes he makes along the way but then recovers from is my favourite bits. Throws in a sample, then chucks it away because it wasn't what he wanted. Keep an eye out for Techno Gandalf in his live stuff, like here, and here. Missing from this one... must have been too late at night. He's often out at random locations making noises which is neat too.

LORD, and specifically their album Set In Stone is one I feel should have been far more popular. Australian rock band that's been around for ages, the members themselves even longer in various other local bands. I guess metal is never really mainstream popular anyway.

End Of Days is an absolute epic track which I can't get enough of, 10+ years after buying it at release. Forever is a dark little video clip (as is the song!) that's incredibly well made (in my opinion). Because We Can is a great track if you like guitars fanging all over the shop, and the video clip is hilarious. Oooh, ice cream! And 100 Reasons is another banger that never gets old, and is reflective as all heck. Great afternoon wind down tune that one.

Just listen to the whole album, IMO. If you like metal I feel like you'll dig it.

They've also done some neat covers, like On A Night Like This (Kylie Minogue), and To The Moon And Back (Savage Garden). They have a few live tracks up as well, like a cover of Metallica's Creeping Death... in fact there's even whole shows up there if you've got an hour or so spare.

I run a dozen small niche websites out of pocket for about $240 a year, including cloud hosting and domain registrar fees. I don't want/need donations; I create and run them because I want them to exist in the world.

In my humble opinion, this is the difference between the internet I grew up with and the internet today.

Back in the day - circa mid 90s to early 00s - people spent hours curating content they found interesting just because they wanted to. They paid (or used advertising supported places like Geocities) and put a wealth of knowledge out there just because they wanted to share it.

It wasn't to make money or become famous, it definitely wasn't to go viral (mainly because the hosting fees would kill you back then heh). It was just a desire to let the world know what you knew so your knowledge could be used by others.

I did it myself - paid my ISP extra to have a few MB of hosting and had a website full of static HTML that was just steps and procedures for working on a niche type of unit no one else really touched. Lots of good info on brands and model names with specs like current draw / resistance of motor windings / control settings / wiring locations and labelling etc. The data came from hard copy manuals that I retyped or scanned so it wasn't as easy as Altavista'ing the unit to find a PDF hosted somewhere.

Also ran a blog of thoughts and activities in the local car scene which was replaced by forums in the 00s. Some things like firing orders for the cars of our various "members" (read: people we knew IRL) were useful references that weren't readily available at the time. Again, typed and scanned from hard copy workshop manuals so not really easily found otherwise that I know of.

The internet now is definitely better by every metric possible, but I do miss that the main driving force of content creation seems to have gone from hobby/enthusiast to popular commercialism.

I wonder if that's exactly the reason why there aren't apps as yet?

The site works perfectly on a browser (and on Android you have plenty of options to choose from), so there's not really a need for an app.

I use Firefox and just tapped "Add to homescreen", then stuck it in my time drain folder.

When I first joined I thought I wanted an app, but after using the site in browser on both desktop and mobile I just don't see any need.

Having said that, if old mate talklittle fires up a RIF style app for Tildes I'm on board. A decade of that interface got me hooked.

I ran a BBS for quite a few years in the mid to late 90s using PCBoard, then Wildcat , and then settling on Iniquity. Had some amazing ANSI art that scrolled for a few pages on logon because much like an onion on your belt this was the style at the time.

    Started with 9600, then 14.4, then 28.8, then 56K.

ZModem and IceZModem transfer protocols were the hotness, can't remember what came before that.

Desqview on the go so I could still use my (very expensive) PC for other tasks while people were fighting ASCII dragons in LORD.

I gave it away after making a mistake with a FIDONet configuration and doing repeated polling of another board that was a "community call" (I think was the term?) rate from where I was. It was not quite long distance, but was charged by time instead of straight flag fall. It was a simple mistake like polling every 24 minutes instead of 24 hours or something. I had a landline plan with a big allowance of local calls, but being a longer distance nothing was covered. I racked up the better part of $500 in a month due to the long call times multiple times a day and decided that was me done.

If there was an alternative, I would happily subscribe to it instead of supporting what they’ve done there.

    Like YouTube Music?

I still preferred it as Google Play Music, but it's grown on me. Being able to upload your own music to stream anywhere is super handy, especially for stuff that isn't strictly music (like comedian stand up sets) that I want to listen to on a whim sometimes but will never be on a streaming service.

I tried Spotify for a year or so and kept getting the same few songs played over and over again so went back to YouTube Music. Ad-free YouTube is also a nice side effect.

If you're on desktop, you NEED YouTube Music Desktop App as the standard web interface is completely bollocks. It also enables scrobbling to last.fm which I find super useful.

The other protip for YouTube Music is to use a different account four Music than YouTube itself. Otherwise your Music recommendations get all screwed up if you accidentally click on a link that somehow features Ed Sheeran audio or something. It ends up like that Family Guy baby photos meme, just smashing your face with Ed Sheeran music for the rest of your existence no matter how little you want it.

The Wire is flawless from start to finish. And despite the technology aging a lot since the show aired, the show holds up in every other regard. I've watched from start to finish at least twice over, and about ready to fire up a third. It's time.

Firefly is another one that I can watch on infinite repeat. Don't forget to finish off with Serenity to give some sort of finale. How Firefly was treated when it first aired was a travesty... it needed 4 seasons of random adventure, then a fifth to finalise the arc.

River Cottage is a cutesy series that you can drop in and watch an episode of at any point. Its always so wholesome. There's half a dozen of the things but they're all listed as separate TV shows so finding them can be slightly more tricky than just "season 1", "season 2", etc.

I've been on wt.social for years, but find it very hard to follow due to the UI using the "cram everything in the middle" style of layout. There's so much wasted whitespace all over the screen! If someone writes a particularly long paragraph you end up with word wraps so deep it takes 14 pages of scrolling to read.

It looks like v2 is more of the same. I've had a bit of a poke around and it doesn't look like there's any way to change the layout to something more appealing. There's also not enough visual separation between each post in my opinion, so scrolling is like a big long wall of text.

I do like the idea of setting a trust level on a user level though... When somone puts up something obviously bollocks you can just reduce the impact that person has on your feed without filtering keywords or blocking or similar.

Super light on members at the minute, and I'm not sure the name "Trust Cafe" is super enticing :-\
