Apologies for the delay -- the tiny little "1 comment" thing is waaaaaay off to the top right of my screen and I didn't notice the bugger.

My original comment was shot from the hip, but I want to emphasize "this amount of money". 100 million dollars as a bonus is an obscene amount of money. Obscene. The fact that these people have that amount to begin with is obscene. People with huge amounts of money don't get there by making ethical choices -- people have to be exploited for money/power to accrue in such ridiculous quantities.

Can you think of a single situation that involved disgusting amounts of money where people didn't get screwed over?

And this isn't curing obesity. This is a tech race to max profit.

They could use a huge chunk of money to do these things ethically, like not pirating data-sources, or not tricking users into giving their data to use for training purposes. Or not working alongside authoritarian governments to get ahead. No, instead they are playing fast and hard with no concern for those exploited or damaged along the way.

With this amount of money being thrown around, you know there is nothing ethical about these situations. The people, the resources, the results -- this is a high-powered rocket pointed at the sun.

I feel like the other comments have already given you a lot to work with. I just wanted to give you something short and simple.

I've been trying to crack down on all the things I feel like I "should" be doing as a lot of it leads to me feeling trapped, even the things I want to do. Perhaps it's silly, but I've been working to rephrase things from should to "I want to be the person that does X."

I want to be the person that shows up for others. I want to be the person that has the energy to talk to people when they reach out. I want to be the person that remembers to give gifts.

If I find that I don't actually WANT to be that person, well, then perhaps it's better that I don't. Or I at least allow myself time to become that person.

    bag phone/car phone

Found a page with a video discussing various car phones (aka, bag phones), especially Motorolas. The still taken from the video is specifically of a man using a motorola car/bag phone.

There are "imposters" in literally every field -- how is it a stretch to think that someone might fancy themselves a photographer in this particular way? I've met people that call themselves "engineers" because "Prompt Engineer" is now a thing. Ok, sure.

His argument is about semantics. Your argument is about semantics. Neither is invalid. It means that not everyone agrees upon the definition of these terms, and because the meaning is clearly important to many people, we need to come up with new, more-precise terms. That is the only way around it.

The current terms are not intuitive and are imprecise. Let's adapt.

The negative impacts of capitalism is a very popular topic in the CPSTD realm. For a specific recommendation, Gabor Mate has a new book out that addresses this issue: The Myth of Normal.

A quick summary of the book:

"The Myth of Normal" by Gabor Maté is a comprehensive exploration of health and society in Western culture. Maté challenges the conventional understanding of "normal" and argues that many chronic illnesses and mental health issues are not isolated problems, but rather symptoms of deeper societal issues and traumas. He posits that the materialistic, individualistic culture of modern capitalism has led to increased stress, trauma, and a disconnection from our authentic selves, resulting in a rise in various health problems despite advancements in medical care. The book criticizes the current medical paradigm for treating the body in isolation and advocates for a more holistic approach that considers the interconnectedness of physical, mental, and social factors in health. Maté draws on his clinical experience and scientific research to offer insights into healing, emphasizing the importance of addressing childhood trauma, cultivating self-awareness, and reconnecting with our innate human needs for attachment and self-expression.

Edit: I realize that I sound stilted in this post. I don't know how to talk about this stuff without writing too much, or too little. Both require too much time and thought. Internetting in 2024. \o/

I don't know why you went with 0.0001% -- was that deliberate or just a random number?

To be considered part of the top 1% in terms of net worth in the United States, your estate would need to be worth approximately $9.7 million to $10 million as of 2024.

    Top 1%: Approximately $10 million
Top 0.1%: At least $50 million
    Top 0.01%: About $227 million
    Top 0.001%: Roughly $1 billion

0.0001% cannot be accurately estimated due to a lack of information.
