I think every book has a very strong pro-worker message (even if it's clear he's also very pessimistic).
For example Kraken is contemporary but has a mishmash of various magical creatures, gods and their worshippers and servants as a hidden society in London. This sounds very generic so I have to add this is the setting for a labour dispute for the familiars union while a museum worker is roped into trying to figure out who stole a collosal squid, which is also the object of worship for a cult.
I can only imagine Mieville was specifically chosen by Keanu (is that how these types of collabs work?) because of that, and I wonder how that gets woven into the story of an immortal seeking to cure himself of immortality.
Does anyone know if the comic this is based on has similar vibes? I've never heard of it till now.
It definitely got my interest!

The visuals are nothing I've seen before or since (which I guess makes sense with the rise and fall of point and click games) and the music is spectacular.
Katamari Damacy isn't as old, but the music made an impression more than the game did first time I played it.

Mainly how weird the controls were and how the music was very generic, yet somehow very specific? Anyway I think the original makers are working on a remaster.

I'd say less since she's likely a lot less exploitative than most people peddling a product. Sure, you could say there's a hint of immorality (though I find it hard to feel bad for these people) to saying she's actually talking to people, but if her subscriber count is high enough that she can afford a full time staff working for her I'd probably be scratching my head about how she's got time talking to me about her likes and dislikes.

She thought it was tense, scary and she liked the ending twist.
I'm not the target audience. I felt the movie was just kind of boring, took a long time to get going, the main bad guy was telegraphed quite heavily and I recognized it as such so the twist wasn't that big to me. Bogged down by a lot of side-story stuff that goes nowhere. The best I can say is that it has fun moments. I fundamentally believe this could've been a quite fun short series (4~6 15-20 minute episodes) of high paced scares.
I think if I was 15 I'd maybe like it more, but I also have seen much better horror movies at 15 so flip of a coin really.

Comment on Israel must stop weaponising the Holocaust in ~society

This is exactly what..."I will say that Israel is located near plenty of people that would erase its existence if they could. They have tried in the past and they continue to try today."
This is exactly what Palestinians say too. They are surrounded by a nation that wants to see their end, and they have been doing exactly that for decades.
What is happening when one nation goes to war with another nation is not the same as when one nation tries to exterminate a people. That alone should make this comparison between Israel today and the Jewish people during the Holocaust inappropriate. But when you consider that during the Holocaust the most powerful nations stood by and let it happen, while in this case the most powerful nations are on the side of Israel while it continues to victimise Palestinians it becomes even worse. If anyone is close to the horrors of what happened during the Holocaust, it would be the Palestinians.

She mentioned "oh I bet you hate me be that you know I worship Shar" when I was still in the first act, and could only say "I don't really care" because I don't know anything about Shar. Then the second act hits and I just keep thinking "Jesus shadowheart, these are your people?".
There's a distinct lack of evil companions too.

A handshake would work for a one off sale (just buying the paintings), but when you know an actively touring band will use it for promotional material and for their 4th album, a previous album having already risen to the number 1 in the UK... I can't help but think this was just a dumb deal to have made altogether. I feel kind of bad, but also can't feel that bad because of how obvious a blunder it seems to be.

Comment on What are the benefits in the here and now of linguistic diversity? in ~humanities.languages

I think the big thing to remember is the lack of ability for a lot of these people. Yes, they're good at fooling people. But that doesn't translate to an ability to organise and coordinate people. Some are worried that Trumps incompetency will be the worst thing about his presidency, but imagine how much worse things would be if we had a Trump figure who knew what he was doing.
Imagine someone able to rile up a large part of the country and actually harness that movement for something other than petty grifting. A genuine competent ideologue with Trump's views (racist, misogynist, classist, etc) is much scarier than what Trump is: a petty grifter who knows what to say to get people's attention.
