The Steam Spring Sale has started today and runs until March 20th.

My personal recommendations based on playtime over the last year:

Noita (60% off): A rogue-lite all about experimentation and exploration. Plunge into the depths beneath the mysterious mountain on a quest to gain true knowledge, crafting wild spells, solving puzzles and growing more powerful along the way... until you accidentally vaporize yourself and have to start again. This game quickly became one of my most favoured of all time.

Getting Over It (75% off): Try to climb a mountain with a hammer, fall down, get frustrated, get back up, centre yourself, say no to anger, try again, never give up, believe in yourself, triumph. Simple.

Golf It (50% off): Mini golf that uses mouse swing mechanics instead of a power-meter like Golf With Your Friends. For a long time now it has been my groups staple backup game when we want to jump into something quick and have a few laughs. Has a course editor and workshop support with many great community made courses available.

See, now my nephew doesn't cheat at tag, it's just that when I tag him he explains to me why my tag was invalid. Apparently tagging someone while standing on carpet doesn't count because that type of flooring, of course, is lava and I shouldn't be standing on it, so I'm still it. I guess it's my own fault for being ignorant of the rules.

Look forward to plenty of quality of life improvements hidden within this release. Faster load speeds, reduced stutter, streamlined processes — spotting all the optimizations that have been applied in the background will take some time.

On top of that, long-awaited comfort features like embedded game windows and interactive in-game editing will feel more in line with other software on the market, making transitioning between them an even smoother experience. The editor overhaul alone takes up a big chunk of this release, after all.

Each time I've played Zomboid solo I can't help but think about switching to Kenshi instead. Another game which also has a substantial amount of stat-grind/supply scavenging but the vast, unique world and intriguing lore beg me to continue exploring and surviving the trials of its harsh wasteland.

Over the last week I've given Project Zomboid a third and most likely final chance.

I purchased the game a few years ago primarily to play with a group of friends. Three of the six players quit within the first couple sessions, two because the difficulty of survival was too much for them and the other because the game was simply too slow for their taste. The remaining three and myself continued on for a bit longer.

With the four of us being fairly proficient zombie survival players having spent quite a few hours playing the old DayZ mod meant that thriving in the world and getting a base established wasn't a very tall order. After that nobody really was itching to jump back into the world of Zomboid as there wasn't much more to do beyond loot, expand our base and grind out skills. Whenever it was suggested for game night it was always met with a resounding "meh" and so it sat on the shelf collecting dust.

With the recent news of build 42 it felt like the right time to give the game another try, this time with the first goal of spicing up the gameplay by using a silly amount of mods. I thought if I could give the game a bit more of an action oriented flavour that maybe I could convince the others to give it another whirl.

I raided the workshop like it was a cupboard filled with canned pineapple, grabbing everything that seemed like it might help. More maps, more cars, more clothes, more traits, more zombies, more QoL, and a lot more America (guns)...

I entered the world for a trial run and in about a dozen hours was able to get a small, somewhat safe house locked down and set out from there to start collecting/fixing cars and prepping to build/secure a larger more permanent compound.

Despite the additional guns and weapons the combat of the game still left a lot to be desired. I feel like the melee is far too monotonous and devolves into doing the three-step swing/push/stomp combo over and over again.

On a particularly successful supply run I found myself having to hunker down in a random house for the night as the zed activity was far too high to safely navigate back home through the pitch black. So I began the usual nightly routine, eat, read, watch some TV, disassemble all the tables/chairs and then get a bit of exercise. As I was instructing my character to do some push-ups I thought "I've been playing for a couple hours, I should actually do some push-ups myself while my avatar is busy doing the same".

With that thought I closed the game and got some real exercise. I get why many people love this game, but I don't believe I'll be coming back.

That's a wild thought, time really flies. It's hard to believe it was 15 years ago that Sid the kid scored his golden goal at the Olympics.

Crosby was a delight to watch in the whole tournament despite being the oldest player.

ABI-DOS isn't on sale but instead is now totally free. If you enjoy Zachtronics style games like SpaceChem then this might be worth trying.

Announcement from the developer (post link):

    • As promised in December, the game is now completely free for everyone to enjoy—forever!
    • This decision comes after modest sales during the first month and a half after release. While the game was still profitable, financial gain was never my primary motivation (I have an independent job outside of game development). My true passion lies in creating Zach-like games with open-ended puzzles and intricate technical solutions. Now, my goal is to reach a wider audience. If significant revenue isn’t feasible, I’d much rather let more people experience and enjoy the game for free.
    • The game is fully complete and features no microtransactions.
    • If you’d like to show your appreciation for playing the game for free, here’s a simple request: play through the first 12–20 levels, or as many as you like. If you enjoy the experience, leaving a positive review would mean the world to me (I will read you review for sure)—that’s all the “payment” I need!
    • If you’d like to make a donation, even a small one, I’d greatly appreciate it! There’s a donation button available on the Discord server, where you can also ask for help or discuss game levels.

I've been using the full-sized Apex Pro for almost two years now and I really like it but I do have a couple complaints. I've not had any issues with switches dying, LED failure or scratchy feeling keys like others have mentioned. This board has been used extensively for both work and gaming, and I would guess that I rank in the upper echelon of power-users when it comes to keystrokes-per-year.

I dislike clicky switches and love shallow activation points so the hall effect style is wonderful for me. Overall the feeling of the board is quite nice and I really do enjoy typing on it. One thing I really love is the feeling of the wrist rest; it's very... skin like (I know that sounds a bit odd). I even bought a spare one in case the original wears out, though after two years of heavy use it's still looking quite new after a good wipe down with a cloth and some warm water.

Now onto the downsides. First is no Linux configuration software. Sure, the board works out of the box on Linux and you can do basic setup on the board itself but some things like customizing the (mostly pointless) mini-led screen required me to boot up Windows to use the Steelseries software. Not a big deal but still worth mentioning. Also I should point out that after you have your board customized the way you'd like you can delete the software as it's not required and the changes you've made will be saved to it's onboard memory.

Second issue is the USB port on the top left of the keyboard, it has a crazy bright white LED ring around it that you can't turn off and it causes a reflection on my screen. The only solution is to not have the second USB plugged in which means that added port on the board is useless to me.

Third is the cable, it's thick, very stiff, and you'll never get the factory added kinks out of it. I'm still slightly annoyed at the sight of the zig-zag cable, especially considering price of the board.

On the point of LED failure I should also disclose that while none of my LEDs have failed, I've also only had them turned on maybe 4 times, with one of those instances being right now to check if the LEDs were working as I typed this reply.

    Edit: Typos

For another alternative check your distro's software repo for PCSXR (or PCSX-Redux for the currently maintained fork). Have been using it for years without issue.

The world also really drew me in and with that I'm pretty disappointed there will not be a continuation of the story. The mystique of it all and the pale in particular really captivated me.

My gaming/hobby PC is getting pretty long in the tooth these days. Originally built in 2011 using an Intel 2600k, two GTX 580s, a custom test-bench case (DangerDen if anyone remembers them) and massive custom watercooling loop. Over the years I've upgraded the SSD/HDD's many times and in 2018 I swapped the GTX 580 SLi setup for an 8GB RTX 2070 when 1.5GB of VRAM was no longer viable.

Thanks to an aggressive overclock, gaming at 1080p and not playing the latest AAA titles I've not really had a huge reason to upgrade. Remembering how quickly computers were considered obsolete in the 90's and early 00's I wanted to see if I could make this machine last a decade. Now that we're a few years beyond that there are some sentimental reasons partially responsible for holding me back from an upgrade. This machine and I have done so much work together, crunched countless numbers, made lots of art and it has been the main game server hub for my friends that I am finding it difficult to power it down and say goodbye.

Also with the cost of building a new, fancy computer right now replacing it is not feasible, unfortunately.

Cfabbro often posts the helpful archive links which are much appreciated and Mycketforvirrad (which my brain always wants to read as 'My ticket for rides') is the tag/title master. One day I hope to post a topic that gets all the tags and title right without needing corrections/additions.
