There is Orion-browser, downloadable simply from the app store that supports many chrome and firefox addons

i mean, "many", is quite a big stretch. They themself claim hundreds, that's nothing compared to the hundreds of thousands of desktop extensions which exist. On firefox android (nightly)/fennec/mull, you're able to install any desktop addon to exist.

On top of that orion mention's:

We’re limited in the scope of APIs we can support

Almost all of the addons/extensions i tried straight up didn't work, or were very jank to use with most features not working. I don't blame orion for this, there's only so much they can do, i blame apple for making it extremely hard if not impossible to get certain features working.

    (I believe currently 7) apps

    1. If you use an app like altstore, which makes it simple, that takes up a slot, so 2. If you don't use altstore, then its just a PITA to auto-renew apps.

Hopefully the EU regulation will help in this latter case.

i think i recall reading somewhere that they were only going to apply to those laws, for phones in the eu, and continue like normal for the rest of the world.

Well, why not just defederate from meta, for your specific account only? Both mastodon and afaik also kbin offer client side defederation. Why do you want your instance to do it for everyone?

I get why server admins are defederating en masse as they don't know what the implications or the load will be like

I get that the high load could be an issue, but i honestly don't see any other disadvantages to it, outside of just advantages. A company as large as meta, bringing that many users and the wider range of content to the fediverse, would be a great thing for the fediverse.

Besides, why not just let the user de-federate client side from meta, and let them decide, rather than having the instance owner make that decision for them? This is entirely possible in mastodon. By blocking it server side, it's directly going against the "no censorship/freedom" goals of the fediverse.

i wouldn't really use bluesky to be honest, it doesn't use activitypub unlike threads, so even though its "federated", it's not of much use outside of communicating with other bluesky instances.

Threads would already be able to communicate with the dozens or so of activitypub services as mastodon, lemmy, kbin, peertube, pixelfed etc are all built on activitypub, yet bluesky for the sake of "account portability" decided to reinvent the wheel and as a result won't be compatible with those services.

But its not. It's decentralised due to the fact that it supports activitypub. So you can continue to use other fediverse services to communicate with meta users, without even needing to touch the meta app. You can use lemmy, mastodon, kbin etc to do so.

But here's great thing: due to the fact that it'll support activitypub, you don't need to use meta's privacy invasive/apps instances in order to communicate with people on meta. You can use the privacy respecting mastodon, lemmy, kbin, etc instance of choice, whilst benefiting from the massive increase in number of fediverse users/content.

This is the best feature meta's brought to date.

You run everything as the same user, so there is zero security boundary between, say, your documents/family images/browser data, and any random application you happen to run.

i disagree, exactly the same statement is valid for windows, if anything its significantly worse. On linux, many solutions exist to limit the range of permissions an application has, and what its able to do. SElinux, apparmor, bubblewrap, flatpak, firejail, etc.

On windows, sandboxing only applies for apps installed via the MS store, which most don't even use, and even then not all apps are guaranteed to be sandboxed. If you take the whatsapp desktop app for example, it has the following permissions:

Access all your files, peripheral devices, apps, programs and registry
You can't control most of the permissions for this app in Settings > Privacy.

Does whatsapp need those permissions to function? Absolutely not.

The way most people are used to installing apps on windows is not by using the ms store either, or by using a package manager (even though options exist on windows for one), but rather opening their browser, searching for the app they want, and clicking on the top download link returned by their search engine. If they get a UAC prompt, they just click "Yes". I hope you can see how flawed that is.

This is also why the surge of malicious google ads was such a large issue to the extent that the fbi starting recommending adblocks as part of internet safety procedures..

Question: how does it work if you need to access an account while not having your vault?
E.g., say you're traveling, your phone dies, and you can only use the hotel's business computers to check your email?

That'd be the main issue with it, you'd need to have the PW manager with you in order to log into accounts. But you shouldn't really log into accounts on devices that aren't yours anyways, especially for accounts as sensitive as email, as if that's compromised, so are all your accounts due to password reset.

you're traveling on business with your work laptop, you can't install third-party stuff on it, but you still have your phone? I presume you can always look up the RNGd passes and key them in manually?

You can yeah, I'd recommend generating passphrases instead of passwords for accounts you think you're going to be manually typing like this often, as it'd be easier to type.

Also, what accounts/devices can't be secured this way? Will a password manager be able to save and enter WEP keys?
what about other applications like Steam?

Sure, bitwarden's not just for passwords, you can store files/notes on it as well.

Why not just use a password manager though? It'd be far more convenient than having to manually recall passwords and having to type them out each time, and password strength wouldn't be determined by the how good your memory is.

combined with something about the site/service

The issue here is that if multiple of your passwords get leaked, not only would an attacker have the original passphrase, but they can also figure out the method you're using when appending to that passphrase.

To think that many years of your life has gone to absolutely nothing within seconds, and i know people who aspire to work in the army as their profession in later life. Wtf? There is nothing heroic or patriotic about wasting your soul for any country, to put it harshly, your single life means nothing to these countries, and thinking otherwise is just ignorance. Even if it were otherwise, and you were remembered, whats the point when you're not alive to see it?
