Which theme are you defaulting to? I'm loving Atom One Dark.
For me it's the most relaxing on the eyes and for scanning. The grayish text compliments the navy background very well imo.

There are darknesses in life and there are lights, and Dracula is one of the lights, the light of all lights.
Dracula here as well. I actually paid for Dracula pro or whatever it is years ago from the official Dracula website.
I thought that you all were having fun at the expense of the new crowd from Reddit. But there really are themes! So glad I believed you and went searching for the settings. I'm enjoying Dracula right now. I'm embracing the dark.
You can switch your theme at the very bottom of every page too. The setting just allows you to set your account default if you want that.
I found the theme preview page very useful in settling on Atom One Dark.
I did not know you could do that! Thanks! This clears up my problem of being in love with one of the light themes but needing dark when I have insomnia.
Also loving dracula. I tried a few and kept going back to this one.
Dracula is one of the very few themes I can look at for hours without straining my eyes for reasons yet unknown. It also helps that there is a pre-made version available for pretty much every popular piece of software out there that supports theming. That makes it a very seamless experience.
I just switched to Dracula at your recommendation, and my god, it is so good. It feels gentle on the eyes while remain pop-py, vivid, and distinct.
Dracula has been my go to on Visual Studio Code for years. It’s the perfect balance of dark theming with legibility and aesthetics.
I get sotn vibes for sure.
What is a
mantheme? A miserable little pile ofsecretsCSS.Your markdown is as empty as your code!
Ah yes, my people. Very poetically said.
All poetic credit goes to Bram Stoker himself!
Love Dark for me. The contrast between the text and background is strong, and the purple feels so rich to me. Years ago I'd invert the colors on my Mac at night since so many sites are super-bright, and DeviantArt would become a similar shade of purple. So it also feels nice and familiar.
Love Dark user since my first day lurking. I really like the balance of colors on both desktop and mobile. Some Tron blue with the deep purple and pinkish... chef's kiss
You know what? I just gave Love Dark a try at your suggestion, and I prefer it over Dracula so far. I think it's a relatively recent add to Tildes, since the last time I was a regular visitor.
Same. Was Dracula and then switched to Love Dark. The text just pops a bit more while retaining the dark theme overall.
This is what I've been using too. I love dark themes, they're easier on my eyes. I tried out all of the available themes to see what I liked most, and Love Dark ticked all the boxes. Balancing dark purple, blues, lighter purples, it's got my favorite colors too.
Agreed with the Gruvbox Dark. I'm new to Tildes, but it was my first pick when trying out the different options.
Ah a fellow Vim user :) also why I am using Zenburn.
Hi Fellow vim users, I'm using gruvbox too. But in VIM l’m currently using tokyonight.
I love that the contrast is a bit more muted. Feels easier on my eyes, like night shift on iOS.
I am very new to Tildes but one of the first things I did was look for some kind of dark mode, and I quickly settled on Gruvbox Dark as my favourite. It was between that and 'black' and so far I'm very happy with my choice
I've been loving Solarized Light ever since I joined.
I don't like dark themes. I'm used to dark text on a light background.
The beige background of Solarized Light is easy on the eyes, and reminds me vaguely of parchment, which gives the site a classy feel.
It is rather classy isn't it?
Yep!
Well, it's obvious you don't have good judgement, if you're calling me "thoughtful" and... "delightful" (what sort of twisted person thinks that I am "delightful"???).
Further to that, a childe of the day who shuns the light and seeks out darkness clearly can't be trusted.
All in all, your opinion can't matter much. :P
I love light themes. I've starting to use them in a lot of places. This is my modified theme that plays off the 'white' theme.
I have to use light themes. It's an accessibility issue for me. White text on dark backgrounds gives me a migraine so I'm really happy there are options here. I personally use Love Light since it's not quite white and it's not a yellow shade (which can make things difficult for me to read).
I really love that there are lots of different theme options for everyone's use and needs. It's one of the things that cemented me wanting to stay on tildes when I first started.
oh wow -- I had no idea that was even there. Light themes deserve more love. I get a similar thing off of white on black
Nice
I’m there with you. Solarized light for day, dark for night.
Me too; I usually end up with dark/grey themes but I love the palette in Solarized Light. Reminds me of good quality paper as well.
I used solarized dark until zenburn popped in, now its always zenburn for me.
Zenburn all the way!
Love Light here! I'm a dark mode user everywhere else but old reddit has converted me to light mode for forums. And the purple is really nice too ^_^
Good suggestion on Love Light! Trying it now during the day and I like it. I share similar feeling on the lighter mode for old.reddit.
I'm a simp for purple, and Love Light features my favorite shade. As soon as I saw it I locked into it, and I hadn't even seen most of the other themes until I read this thread. Dracula is nice, I do really like Black, but as a light mode user the best one by far is Love Light
Love Light checking in! It's the perfect color combination for my accessibility needs, no extra pfaffing about needed.
Gruvbox Light. Black text on Sepia background makes it easier to read.
I prefer the default white theme. The rest are cool as well, but this one just feels best to me
"Black" works for me.
Dracula for me, but high-contrast Dark Mode themes are just easier on my eyes in general. Tastes vary.
Dracula makes Tildes match my IDE and terminal, so that's fun
Same here. I really like the theme, it’s very nice on my eyes.
Atom One Dark is really nice, but on my phone, I just prefer black. Before I moved here, I used to have most, if not all my social media apps on a pure black AMOLED mode because on an OLED screen, it's just better. While I do like the light blue as a secondary color, I would love to have a sharp red instead as I do on the rest of my system and as I used to have on my Reddit app.
On PC, I tried Black too but I found it just not good enough without my trusty OLED screen on my phone, so I've gone ahead with the Love Dark theme. I don't know exactly what it is about it, but I just like it. It's strange since I don't usually tend to use purple themes but that one specifically really ends up being a looker on this website.
Love Dark feels retro. It's not bad.
Atom One Dark is the closest option to Nord so that is currently what I am using
I used to be a big Solarized fan but lately it just feels off. Sure Nord doesn’t have as many colors, and maybe that’s why I prefer it. Clean, simple and effective.
I would love for Nord to one day be an option, but for now Atom One Dark will do
Same here, and for the same reasons. I would love to have Nord as an option, but Atom One Dark works nicely for now.
Gruvbox Dark - I think it's the best for scrolling before bed with its relative lack of blue
I wrote my own! https://userstyles.world/style/10278/tildes-mustard-dark
You need to use the white theme in order to use it correctly.Fixed! Adds a few colors and buttons to Tildes.edit: still some bugs; be patient as I work them out!
Added Tildes Mustard Dark to the wiki: https://tildes.net/~tildes/wiki/customizing_tildes#css_themes
I didn't see your original post about it a couple days ago.
By the way, you can get the userstyle to work on any Tildes built-in site theme by adding the following selector:
Awesome! Thank you.
Just pushed an update with this fix! Thanks.
I've been using this (with a few modifications) since I first joined, and it's by far my favourite theme. Thanks a lot!
Good to hear; thank you. I just spent about an hour updating it some more this morning. I made that initial theme before I even had an account, so it was missing a few things.
Black, plain, simple, easy to read and on the eyes.
Love Dark is probably one of the best dark themes I've come across. I have a dark-pastel-purple hotbar for Firefox, which makes it mesh together really well.
I spent my afternoon making a Nord theme for Tildes. I spent some extra time changing the Tildes logo to match, as well as fixing all those damn hovers. It also adds an external link icon to any post containing an external link. (Something I wish Tildes had by default.)
Available here: https://userstyles.world/style/10435/nord-for-tildes
I don't have GitLab, but this was requested a few years ago: https://gitlab.com/tildes/tildes/-/issues/565
Huge fan of Nord.
I bet no one can get a merge request in before I figure out how to contribute and add Nord theme ;)
to help you along ;)
https://gitlab.com/tildes/tildes/-/tree/master/tildes/scss/
I still remember when I first saw Dracula theme's website, I thought to myself: what kind of crazy person would try and get this in every darn website or app on god's green earth? Who is that dedicated?
Me. I'm the crazy person among many others. We're using Dracula.
Gruvbox Dark gang rise up!
Zenburn goes really great with the rest of my desktop theme (breeze-dark).
Solarised Dark because it closely matches my Windows and everything else theme, it's very pleasing and I love dark teal/blueish/grey themes
Thanks for the heads up, didn't know you could use themes here. Now I'm trying Dracula and then will give a try with atom dark in a few days
Themes? There are themes?
Ahh, that is so much nicer.
Thank you kind sir/madam/other.
Love dark.
Completely honestly I've been using the default white theme. I guess as a hangover from old forums and old reddit. I use Merbivore/Darcula in Rstudio and Pycharm for work, but code vs long-form text is a completely different ballgame. I might look at building some themes for tildes when I have some time.
Gruvbox Dark #1 ;)
I like love dark, not sure why, just feels real easy on the eyes.
Love all the different themes in general, well, except the light themes, but I'm glad they're there for the people that like them.
My own :) https://codeberg.org/akselmo/Revontuli/src/branch/main/Tildes
i’m a dracula.
Love dark (:
Dracula is my all time favorite! But recently I’m also loving Love Dark - gives me similar vibes but higher contrast.
Love Dark! The purple is pretty.
I would love for the theme to detect the system theme and allow for selecting a light theme and a dark theme. I like light theme during the day and dark theme at night. There are CSS selectors for the user preference so this theoretically is something that could be implemented someday and would be really awesome to see! Love the theming and boxy styles overall.
https://gitlab.com/tildes/tildes/-/issues/307
Gruvbox Dark. It's super easy on my eyes.
Yup. I love brown and Gruvbox is just so comfy.
Bruv, I think your finger slipped off the G key. ;)
Bruv is Gruv's laid back stoner uncle. :D
Thanks, I didn't even realize.
+1 for Atom One Dark. I very much like the overall aesthetic & implementation of a dark theme that isn't "too dark".
Oh there's themes. I'm using black since 5 seconds ago because of my OLED display on my phone. It will save some battery.
I think anyone with OLED/HDR phones and monitors are probably going to default to black. It has a wonderful contrast to read from, and it also looks fairly similar to how I used Reddit is Fun for a little dose of nostalgia. Q_Q
I'd like to be able to use a different theme on my SDR desktop and a different one on my OLED phone, but given that Tildes is just a website it doesn't seem feasible right now, but it's certainly technically doable.
EDIT: I just read it in the guided tour from Tildes Shepherd:
Neat! So it already works.
I'm using the default white theme now. I was using Atom One Dark, but I still prefer light mode themes. I joined here near the end of my month of forcing everything into dark modes to see what all the fuss was about and I came away believing light makes right.
Solarized Light is where it's at! I personally love light themes, but this is even better for visibility and eye non-hurty-ness.
I've tried all of the dark themes for at least a day each and I mainly stick with Gruvbox Dark because it's the least blue. However it looks bad with my blue light filter turned on, so I switch to Atom One for for that.
I would probably prefer something like Atom One Dark or Black if they weren't so blue. And what's with all the blue anyway?! I mean, we have this whole spectrum of colors and all the dark themes together only utilize about a tenth of it.
I think it's because blue is a relaxing color, so that would help people to relax when they engage with one another.
Yes, I'm certain that's it. But I'm a little miffed that slightly different shades of blue is the only option.
Plus, with things like Dark, blue isn't the primary color. So I feel like having different color options for a black theme wouldn't have the same effect as say, staring at an all red background.
I wanted to go with Solarized Light, as I like light schemes more, but the standard white is kinda a bit too light. But Slarized light has bad font color, too faint.
I kinda like the Love one (or how it goes), but it is kinda too much purple/violet at once. I quite like the purple top/navigation bar, but the background color for the page would have to be more toned down (I mean more white).
I tried on mobile. I have to give it a chance on PC too.
So which color theme do I use now? Believe it or not, standard white and I actually like it!
Most Practical: Black. Darkest background means good contrast and no need for auxiliary lighting in the room.
Most Pretty: Love Dark. Every customisable site needs a purple mode.
Atom One looks good as well when coming from the default white, but after you have Love Dark enabled for five minutes, switching to Atom One is like replacing all happiness from your screen with a dull grey.
Dracula for now. I've spun a dev instance on my end and I'll try to add the Nord Theme (both Polar Night and Snow Storm) to it and submit a PR soon.
Thanks! I'll take a look!
My goal is to have it part of the official theme list in the dropdown :)
Yea so uh… White. I have a strong preference for light modes (dark modes tend to strain my eyes much faster for some reason, and I usually browse in brightly lit rooms anyway so the brightness isn’t a concern) and while I tried some of the other ones and found them prettier in theory, I’ve found this one by far the easiest on the eyes.
Atom One Dark on desktop (with Dark Reader active, although it doesn't change much) but Dracula on mobile.
Somehow I really need more contrast on smaller screens and I generally dig blue accents. I'm any case, dark theme everywhere for me, always!
Somehow i think i read better on a whiter background when i'm on a desktop. On mobile i tend to prefer dark themes.
Love light for me is the best theme to use on desktop.
I go for straight Black. It's easy on the eyes, sure, but more importantly it's as close as you get to a pure text-only Tildes experience. Black hides some of the styling and highlights so that there's less color noise on the screen. Just the text remains.
By the way, if there is a Blackula out there I am most willing to switch to that tribe...
Same here. I tried some of the other variations but ended going back to the black theme. Very clean and to the point.
Yup, I'm feeling the power of the atom as well.
Atom One Dark -chefs kiss- I too am an enjoyer of this theme. Like you I find it easier on the eyes to read. Over the years I have found myself gravitating towards not super high contrast themes on websites, white with black text is too bright, but black with white text is.. harsh on my eyes?
Though, the variance of dark themes here are excellent to be able to pick between.
Definitely atom one dark for me too
Solarized Dark, because I use it religiously whenever available. I even made a solarized Dark theme for duckduckgo.
Ditto! I've taken to using Dark Reader set to the Solarized Dark setting for everything, it's glorious.
After writing my comment I actually decided to peruse the other options and decided to use Zenburn on mobile because it helps reduce glare. Still using solarized Dark on desktop though.
I use Black on my iPhone as it looks great on that screen. I'll switch to Love Dark on my laptop or ipad though usually at night when I'm doing a long catch up session.
Been using solarized dark since I joined the page. Tbh I quite like it in my text editors too, although these days I've been preferring monokai :)
Still Dracula!
I use Dracula on my phone, but for whatever reason, I'm sticking with White on desktop. I think it's maybe just nostalgia.
Another Atom One Dark fan here, though I still have a soft spot for classic 'Black.' Both work well on my phone's OLED display.
Atom One Dark gang 🤝
Personally I enjoy the stylization of the Gruvbox themes. I usually stick with Dark on my phone but Light is really nice too.
I love Dracula! It's similar to the theme I had going in Sync before coming over here. What can I say - I like dark blue. All the themes are quite nice honestly, even the light ones.
Currently I am using Dracula on mobile and solarized dark on desktop. I like to have darker on mobile
Huh, interesting. Complete opposite for me. I prefer light themes on mobile (white), and dark on desktop (dracula or love dark). I find that white backgrounds on mobile devices helps reduce the reflections and glare on my screen, but dark themes indoors are easier on my eyes. Why do you prefer dark themes on mobile?
I guess just personal preference. I think I like darker stuff on mobile because of the contrast.
Do you not find the reflections distracting if you're in a brightly lit environment when browsing on mobile using darker themes? When I can see a reflection on a black background on my mobile screen I struggle to focus on the image being displayed underneath that reflection. It could just be a problem with my eyes, or on my particular mobile phone and tablet though, since they're kinda old, and are both glossy screens. On matte screens I don't have that issue, but not many mobile device screens are matte these days. :(
A lot of it is that I do lots of reading on mobile indoors. If I am reading outdoors/in bright light, usually I try to get into a shadow or form a shadow on the screen.
Ah, that makes sense. I use my mobile phone and tablet a lot in the sun. I love sitting directly under the hot sun as often as I can, since we only get that kinda weather a few months a year up here in Canada. :P
Gruvbox Light. Closest to what I want out of a theme at the moment.
I'm a sucker for true black themes on OLED, so, I vote black!
Used Dracula for a whiiile but lately plain ol Black has been easy on my eyes
I am rocking the vampire one.
I didn't even realize Tildes had themes! That's awesome!
Normally, I like
Solarized Dark
... but here, I'm actually likingAtom One Dark
. I dunno if it's a Solarized thing, or if the theme is just not very well implemented, but it's tough to read here.I tried them all for a day and Atom One Dark is just the most natural to me. It matches the color theme that I put on my own internal environment monitoring website, so it just feels like home. I wanted to like some of the other dark themes, but they were either too blue, too purple, or felt like I was on night time eye saver (cut the blue) mode. I'm still sad they sunsetted Atom and I had to switch to VS Code. Atom was amazing.
Another fan of Atom One Dark here. It's got just the right balance for me between legibility and being easy on the eyes. Love it. 👌
I love the look of gruvbox dark, and other sepia themes like rosebox in general. Feels less "in my face", and is just easier for reading at night
I also pair it with this userstyle: https://userstyles.world/style/10370/rounded-tildes-vignesh which makes tildes look more modern in my opinion.
pic of theme: https://envs.sh/dh4.png
I really like Solarized Dark and Dracula. But I only use Black - because I need a minimal amount of light coming off my display (usually phone) with decent contrast on the text. But if some of the other themes were to have black backgrounds I would enjoy using them too.
Black user here. Would love to see the text and accent colors to be different, the blue seems a bit harsh. Switched because I prefer a solid black background on an AMOLED screen.
I use the stock theme, but then I style it myself in Arc browser using their Boosts feature.
I prefer Atom One Dark too: balanced color [not so colorful but also not so colorless] with fine support code lines.
Solarized dark for everything possible not just tildes!
I like the black theme
