I do always romance Garrus tho, he is the absolute best (it is maddening how you can't romance him in ME1. Drives me insane haha) and yeah it is cool you can transfer it between games.
But yeah that additional complexity to the point of characters even remarking if you broke up with them and hooked up with someone else was what I really loved about DA2. IDK if we'll get something like that again tho. A lot of people think complex romantic systems should just stay in romance focused games but honestly I completely disagree, I think having a big sci fi or fantasy or whatever epic with romantic options should affect other characters and dialogue in main and side stories, at least a little.

Thus all these attempts to further monetize and put profits first. The fetish for endless growth at all costs will truly destroy pretty much every consumer product imo

One of my favourite parts of those was how party members could actually hook up with each other, if I didn't hook up with them.
I particularly love DA2s romance system because the characters are pretty interesting, and the three act structure of that game really gives some nice progression on it. And I love how other party members will comment on it. There's even banter for pretty specific situations! Like if you let Fenris break up with you and pursue Anders after Act 2 (I think it's Act 2) you can hear Fenris and Anders talking about it sometimes in banter. Just really cool. I think even the DLC, Legacy, had specific dialogue depending on when you do it and your current status with a romantic partner. That's the kind of thing I absolutely love, I love it when you get additional dialogue and stuff, it really makes it feel more developed and real.
Also loved how in DA2 they changed up the 'get approval to make them like you' usual fare and instead had a rival/friendly romance system, where the romance and attraction could still happen even if you didn't just make choices the character liked, but it was different and more tense if it was rival focused. DA2 is kind of a mess but it's romance system totally saves it for me, they just did a lot of cool stuff with it.

But you know, especially if it's a game, you do want your games to be welcoming to everyone. In the 90s/00s there was a big belief that women didn't really play video games, and that's why you see sexualization and objectification of sooo many female characters in games.
Sometimes that can work despite that (Bayonetta being an example, who despite being sexy and risque and fanservicey, is seen as empowering to a lot of women because of the writing in her story and how her sexuality is written as genuinely subversive for the rules of the world she resides in) but a lot of times this kind of fanservice is extremely offputting, especially to women.
I'm sure nerds like us on here have a game or anime that we want to recommend to others but it has this kind of dated sexism that puts people off. I don't think going back and removing those elements is that bad in that sense. But I do get how it can be a slippery slope.
Like people are saying that a disclaimer works and in some cases it does, but for me, a queer woman, when it comes to homophobia and sexism, seeing a disclaimer that 'sorry we severely sexualize women in this game, it was the 80s/90s/early 00s' isn't gonna make me suddenly turn off my brain to it, like oh they're apologizing but that's just how it was back then...ehhh. Same with homophobia...I'm just likely to not even bother with the product then if they'd removed those elements entirely. But of course this is wildly different then what a disclaimer like that is usually used for, namely racial elements from decades ago, and I'm white as the driven snow so not really in a position to talk about that aspect at least.
I remember in Persona 5 people made a big deal of how they removed/changed this bit that was a pretty homophobic joke. Personally I'm glad for things like that. Especially in escapism. I don't really see an argument for keeping these things when you're going to release them in a modern market. But that's just imo.

Comment on 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' projecting towards $60-65m domestic, $140m worldwide opening in ~movies
LuckiestMushroom I very much appreciate the pun in deadline's title, whip up, solid as usual Deadline. In article quotes for more contextI very much appreciate the pun in deadline's title, whip up, solid as usual Deadline. In article quotes for more context
Facing the worst reviews ever for an Indiana Jones movie, the Lucasfilm franchise finale Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is hoping to gain traction with audiences and best its $60 million-$65 million domestic start and $140M global opening.
If the post-pandemic era has proved anything, it’s that popcorn pics aren’t so beholden to the Rotten Tomatoes barometer. Jurassic World: Dominion was shot down by film reviewers for all intents and purposes at 29% Rotten but prevailed to a $145M domestic opening. More recently, The Little Mermaid at 67% fresh saw a $118.8M four-day start. Dial of Destiny is now at 65% fresh, versus its previous chapters: Raiders of the Lost Ark (93%, 1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (77%, 1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (84%, 1989) and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (77%, 2008).

But upon reflection Barbie and Oppenheimer both have pretty reasonable budgets from what I remember and I think that’s really the problem here, the out of control budgets, so maybe it’ll be different next month. Had Elemental had a lower budget this opening wouldn’t be nearly as dire for instance.

But I love the actual scope of the maps and how it really feels like you’re on a war campaign. I understand it might be alienating to some newer players, but I think if they really emphasize the castles as a checkpoint aspect maybe it can be okay.
I would want them to take some of the janky nature out for some things, like doubling being tied to a skill that only some characters have or only married couples being able to share money. But I really hope they keep the broad, massive maps. They take a long time but it’s definitely part of the appeal to me.

Fire Emblem Heroes and Fire Emblem Engage (especially the former) have both been amazing at introducing newer players to older fire emblem so I think there’s definitely some profit in it. Pretty much anyone who plays fire emblem heroes regularly now knows about the older games pretty well, which is a nice boon.

There are so many I love so much. I think I could only narrow it down to Sansa, Jaime, and Theon if you really made me pick haha. Sansa’s chapters were hugely influential on me as they’re from such a unique perspective in fantasy and deep down she really is a sweet girl. I love her talk with the Hound where he talks about how horrible his brother was and she just quietly comforts him. Then the next chapter is at the tourney from Ned’s perspective and he notices how Sansa is suddenly inexplicably rooting for the Hound to win. I love these little details and character moments esp when it’s a POV in another POVs chapter :)

Basically, it’s a theory that yes, Tyrion is Drogo and Dany’s child. Basically he’s a time travelling fetus, and the fetus that had seemed ‘dead for years’ that MMD described was actually Joanna’s baby sent through time, and that Tyrion was sent back in time through the ritual. It was nuts. I really hope it is preserved somewhere else other then the subreddit because it’s a hilarious crackpot theory. If you look up ASOIAF time travelling fetus you might be able to find it somewhere

Title, basically. The A Song of Ice and Fire subreddit has seemingly gone indefinitely private, so I was wondering if any other ASOIAF fans migrated here during or after the blackout. I definitely miss all the crazy theories we could read on there (I cannot believe D+D=T, the most legendary ASOIAF theory, may become lost forever if the subreddit never opens again, truly a loss of a masterpiece.)
Since it was still pretty active despite the book series being rather dormant, I wondered if any other fans came over here and wanted to chat about it. Just crazy theories, favourite characters, that sort of thing.

I think it actually has a lot interesting to say about how troubled teens and adults might use games as a way to reclaim the childhoods they never had and how that can actually be pretty cool - Katsuya, Atem, and Kaiba all follow this trend pretty closely. Seto Kaiba is probably my favourite character in all of fiction.
This topic is more about the card game but I hope talking about the anime/manga is still. Relevant enough to at least idly chat about it in here lol
I definitely get pretty intense chills from music. Thought that everyone did if the music really speaks to them.
As I'm writing I'm listening to a Taylor Swift playlist and the bridge in the Champagne Problems literally never fails to give me massive chills. Not even because of the lyrics (tho they are great.) But how it keeps building and building until trailing off...I'm not much for musical terms but the composition here is really something else.
