I created it when I lived with my ex best friend, and I helped her pick out a bird, which ended up being a Maroon bellied green cheek conure. She (the bird) was a cheeky thing, and I just... Wanted to honour her I guess! Over the years I've just grown fond of it and stuck to it.

I use other monikers online in other places, but this is my "forum" type one that just stuck.

    I miss that bird <3

The conversation and connection I would like to see in this space is that if women (all women not just cis) are speaking on their lived experience, that others listen and not invalidate their statements. The thing that got toxic about 2x (imho) was that when it was made a default subreddit, more often than not it felt like one needed to be on the defensive against others coming to the space to argue or discredit what women were saying or talking about.

I do agree that everyone should feel welcome to post here, but respect is paramount.

I would also expect in the ~life.men group that the inverse of what I have stated above to also be true. That it would be a safe space for people to speak and have others listen and learn from each other.

Nothing is more important than connecting with each other and learning from our respective lived experiences <3

Happy Birthday! I hope you've had an excellent day!

I've always been fairly firmly on the childfree boat myself, occasionally waxing rhetorical about the idealistic side of having them. However realistically I know for both myself and my husband that it would not be the right choice. My own upbringing, ADHD and other undiagnosed neurodivergencies, I believe, would not make me the best parent. I have wonderful niblings that I enjoy spending time with, but also equally enjoy going home from.

I am a similar age to you, and my life has been a chaotic mess of jobs here and there, but nothing that truly grounded me. I did a diploma just before COVID and lockdowns happened (in Justice, got the Dean's award for the year too!), however soon realised through lockdown that it was a hyperfocus that burnt hot and fast. Since then I've been looking for work, but unfortunately have not been successful, I am eternally grateful for my husband's support through the last few years.

I am excited however, as on Monday I am starting a TAFE (Australian Vocational School) course for phlebotomy and pathology! I am super excited, nervous, scared, but also hopeful that it will help propel me into a new path. It took me a while to decide to do something that would be relevant forever, rather than follow my magpie tendencies towards things that would be affected by the economy downturn or another pandemic.

Wishing you and anyone reading this a wonderful day <3

I've been making this through the winter here in Australia, it's hearty and warm, while being healthy and delicious. If you want you could pair it with rice, but we've been having it as is and having some corn chips with it if we're feeling fancy. Probably not a very traditional dish, but we enjoy it a lot.

The below makes enough for about 2-3 days between 2 people (or it lasts me and my husband that long).

    "Chunky Chili Con Carne"

    -1 tbsp rice bran oil
-700g gravy beef, cut into 2.5cm pieces
-2 large brown onion, finely chopped
    -3 garlic clove, crushed
    -2.5 tbsp ground cumin
    -4 tsp ground coriander
    -1.5 tsp chilli powder
    -700g Italian tomato passata sauce
-400g can red kidney beans, drained, rinsed
-400g can four bean mix, drained, rinsed
-400g can black beans, drained, rinsed
    -500ml beef bone broth

Heat oil in a medium frying pan over high heat. Cook beef, stirring, for 3 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a bowl. Reduce heat to medium. Add onion. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened. Return beef to pan. Stir in garlic, cumin, ground coriander and chilli powder. Cook for 1 minute or until fragrant. Add passata, beans and bone broth cups cold water. Stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, covered, for 1 hour 15 minutes or until beef is tender.

Look, I moderate online ( not Reddit or the like) and stood with the mods in the blackout. The r/pics response was amusing, but ultimately harmless, but the direction that the mods of my local city have decided to take (apparently there was a discord poll ??) is frustrating. It's now a fairly useless subreddit, when before it was a small community of local people able to connect and get help here. Now it's just troll posts and the mods are deleting people who are posting stuff relevant to them and aren't in line with their "new direction".

Honestly kinda over it, and this is coming from a 13+ year user of RiF. I was prepared to drop my phone usage of Reddit, and use it solely through my PC with RES and old.reddit.

Just venting I guess, it's thankless work being a mod, I know, but that's the breaks. This temper tantrum they're currently engaging in is just turning our local community subreddit against them.

(Sorry if this doesn't make sense, no coffee and a head cold making me suffer).

Cooked with gas my whole life, and anytime I have had to cook without it I desperately miss the fine control you get with gas over the size of the flame. The coil type stay hot and you can't turn the heat low without it taking ages to cool down, and the induction ones are just... Odd.

Maybe I don't understand them, but I've never had the control with induction that people tout compared to reducing the flame size with a gas stove.

Luckily the place I am in has adequate ventilation and a window we open when cooking. But I'll be sad when I am eventually forced to change to electric stove types.

Though, the variance of dark themes here are excellent to be able to pick between.

I struggle with externalising my to do lists, using calendars and reminders. I will use them sparodically and then, bam miss a day or two and suddenly cannot touch them.

That one thing on the to do list that I put off and off and off, only to then abandon the whole list system due to so much shame about "breaking the system" gets to me a lot.

I only got diagnosed last year as a woman in my mid thirties, and the learning process to not just internally try to remember everything ala neurotypicals (I always felt less than) and tell myself it's OKAY to use tools to help myself (medication and other things) is slow. The 3+ decades of masking and attributing all my faults and flaws to "lazy, terrible, selfish, rude, forgetful" is a lot to unpack, and recognise as the ableism it is, is a lot to go through.

I know that for some it is a "super power" but I feel like that meme of the steps up the Chinese mountain, where NT have the nice easy steps, and mine is basically a ladder, really resonates with me. But getting a diagnosis really did help with my internal shame.

This is shamelessly stolen from the @OMGImAutisticAF twitter but really helped me:

'“Why do you need a label?” Bc there is comfort in knowing you are a normal zebra, not a strange horse. Bc you can’t find community w other zebras if you don’t know you belong. And bc it is impossible for a zebra to be happy or healthy spending its life feeling like a failed horse.'

Also the rambling. Oh my life, the rambling. Sorry for getting off topic.

Personally I like having subtitles on due to my ADHD and slow auditory processing. Additionally I sometimes find that while I hear what someone has said, if they have an accent (EG some strong USA ones or strong British accents, I'm Australian ironically) it's nice to have them on to confirm what has been said and I did indeed hear it correctly.

I also tend to watch things while doing other tasks, and a glance over at the subtitles to double check that I heard right is nice.

Plus some of the things other users have mentioned like poor audio mixing (seriously why is some music/SFX so loud) is pretty hit or miss, and I enjoy being able to comprehend what I am watching.

I love the discussion aspect I'm seeing most so far here, and while I understand the concern about memes and the like, sometimes they do spark interesting talks. I also would love to have some more local area groups come into being for news etc (but I am aware that will take time and saturation of people from those places i.e. Australia news etc). The internet is a vast place, and the saturation of USA news and politics is sometimes overwhelming.

So long as, like others mentioned, low effort posts are fewer than the good discussions being had I think it will trend in a positive direction. I am also loving that (as far as I have seen so far anyhow) that there is little to no divisive, hateful content that is designed to evoke that "hate" reaction that algorithms seem to favour. The fact that is apparent is very comforting to me, especially as a woman and part of the rainbow crew.

Also, I am aware that I am a very new user here, so take the above with however many grains of salt necessary ;)
