Be careful with Lemmy 3rd party apps.

Unless something has changed very recently, Lemmy does not implement OAuth, so you'll have to provide your credentials directly in the app, with all the risks that involves. Their MFA implementation is also utterly broken, don't try to activate it if you don't want to risk getting locked out of your account.

If my browser opens totallyn0tascam.xyz for me to login, I'll probably think something is fishy.

Also, supply chain attacks are a thing, and can happen to the most legit apps. So I'd rather not give my credentials to any app when there's well established technical solutions to avoid it. It's all about reducing the attack surface area.

I haven't heard about Lemmy's MFA implementation being broken. Could you link me to more information on that? Don't find anything with a quick search.

My Instance is sh.itjust.works, and I know of another user from another instance who had the same issues.

        • you can't activate MFA on desktop because it wants to open an app (like authy) with a specific URI scheme
        • it doesn't ask for a token to confirm activation
        • when I tried to login after activating it, the token was systematically refused
        • fortunately I was still logged in on my phone, so I deactivated MFA.

I have to double check to be sure (on mobile).

According to Google Play, Boost seems to do all three things... collect, share device information. They also have in-app purchases. I'm sure it's a great app but...

On a positive.. Wow! The amount of Lemmy clients in development speaks volumes. Lemmy is here to stay.

I used Boost for Reddit before and I think this is the dev trying to salvage his app. I think the reason why Boost collects and shares data is because of the ads on the free version of the app. The in-app "purchases" is just an option to let you buy the premium (one time, ad-free) version.

I've only installed clients if they made it onto a playstore. This way I don't have to worry about manual updates since, at this stage, the updates are going to be very regular.

PS: loving Liftoff! Even at this testing stage it feels highly polished.

I don't know anything about app development, but it appears most of the work is done. Would it be that difficult to make it a standalone app at this point?

I have to be honest, all these apps suck big time. They're all lacking basic features, really basic stuff like searching for communities for instance, the most complete one is Jerboa, but it's laggy and janky as hell. I'd honestly pay $5 bucks just to have a decent app at this point, I can't wait for Boost and Sync.

I was a rif user so I'm mostly looking forward to Tildes is Fun or whatever that app will be called, but I'll definitely check out Boost for Lemmy. I was using Beehaw a decent amount but they defederated from a major instance that hosted some of the main communities that I was active on right before I got my invite to Tildes, so maybe this will get me to try it out a bit more.

I've been preferring to use Tildes but I also have been using kbin, mostly because Chrome let me "install" an "app" for it on my phone. I'm enjoying the quality of the discussions on Tildes much more, but the Fediverse has easier access to more communities, whereas I might not know which Tildes topic is best to post about, say running (~health? ~hobbies? ~sports?).

Right, but what if you want to give a report on the race you personally ran recently? You certainly weren't competitive in the race so does a description of the course and the issues you personally experienced really belong in ~sports? Or what if you want to discuss techniques for building a better aerobic base? That could go in ~health because you're discussing ways to target your health to be better for running but that's so you're more competitive, so ~sports could be appropriate, but you want to specifically consider what the literature has to say about it, so perhaps ~science would cover a discussion of those studies? Or would just ~hobbies be the catch-despite the fact that it's really mostly discussions about hardware and cars and podcasts instead of in-depth discussions of how to hone your body for one purpose?

I would say ~hobbies is fine if that's the answer, but that is so broad and the posts on there tend to be specific. I know that tags are the answer but that requires so many tags to catch all the potential topics and tags just for running.

The other answer could just be that the Fediverse is the place to look for for specific, niche discussions, whereas Tildes can be where you are shown a potpourri of niche discussions.

I wonder if a “cross posting” or linked post feature would benefit such an occasion. Without one it obviously comes down to what the content of the post is. Depending what the content of the post ends up being, it could easily satisfy one, if not all three of those groups.

At the same time, the discussion that will occur will obviously change/differ depending on where it ends up getting posted. I doubt that a post that in ~hobby will have the same types of conversation that a post in ~science would have. This would mean that the intent would also have to be a factor in where a post goes?

The way I understand it is to comapre it to email. There's Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Outlook, and a variety of work emails. But they can all talk to one another becsuse of an underlying email protocol that non-technical people don't need to care about. All email services build on this and any person csn whip up a server and use this protocol to make their own email domain.

Lemmy/KBin/etc. Are your email sites, and the underlying tecj you don't need to care about called ActivityPub is the protocol. The rest of the metaphor clicks from there. Each site has their own design but also lets certain other sites talk to one another, as if they are also a part of each other. Those are the basics.

I mean, they can but it would be highly irregular, whereas it's totally normal in the Fediverse.

It's definitely an awesome app for Reddit, and the dev has always been very active on the sub and responding to feedback.

I don't personally have any interest in lemmy or the fediverse, but if anyone is then I would say it's likely this will be an excellent app for it.
