I feel like I'm just rambling but the questions nag at me: will I find that I enjoy engaging here, and will others find me tolerable?

I find that many long-form comments arguing for a position are sort of a shotgun approach: they will try every argument in favor of a position, sometimes going of on tangents, and making many informal fallacies.
my approach, then, is to isolate each weak or fallacious bit and explain why it's poor reasoning or why I disagree with your opinion. and while I've been called a lot of unpleasant things and even had people criticize this style, I find that it helps cut through gish gallops and the longest reply threads tend to be the ones closest to the crux of the disagreement.
that, or insults.

i'm going to summarize what i remember, but i encourage you to go read for yourself:
basically, setting the tags on your post are what indicates subgrouping and lets admins know how much interest there is in a particular tag, so they can consider whether its worth making a new group.

edit:
you know what, i actually have a novel use for matrix: i have a private space i called "Checklists+" and in it i have a clipboard channel for moving text and files around, a ToDo channel and a Shopping channel. in the last two, i use emoji reactions to indicate status of items (hourglass for an item that i should have had done before now, or checkmarks for completed items, etc)

and.... this works? like admins are actually ok just going to other servers, ripping all the content off of it, and rehosting it? it's reliable?
i guess i'm a bit incredulous: it seems like it's a gigantic liability for the server admins, and it also seems like the server admins could be capricious and just stop users from participating in a group (even if it were for a good reason).

You can reply back to the forum and it gets sent to the usenet server, then various usenet servers (your ISPs, my ISP, billy's ISP) all sync in the background generally every few minutes.
how? do i need an account with some server?

ok this is going to sound crazy i think, but i thought using gnus for rss would be pleasant for me, since i hate leaving emacs (i literally wrote this topic in emacs and pasted it in). but it looked like the best support channel for gnus was the gnus newsgroup?!
so i want to use gnus for rss, but be able to get support from their newsgroup, so now i think i need to understand newsgroups.

I tried to use Gnus to set up some rss feeds about a year ago, and I became more than frustrated: I was actually confused.
So here are a couple questions I don't even understand where to ask or whether they're relevant or being asked in the right way:
Are most newsgroups mirrored? And along those lines, is there one particular newsgroup server that would be sufficient for most users?
Can I post to a newsgroup in the same way I would post to a mailing list: send an email somewhere? Where do I send that?
What even is NNTP? Someone literally sent me the spec for the protocol, but I don't think they actually wanted to be helpful: I felt like they were putting me down and intentionally not answering while giving the appearance of being helpful. Is it actually something I need to understand to use Gnus effectively?
If you're familiar with newsgroups, I would surely appreciate your knowledge.

Comment on Bags and backpacks! What do you look for, what do you use? in ~life.style
commie i might be a bad person (in this regard) but i ... buy bags less than $10 and keep like 4 or 5. so here's my reasoning: when i'm going to see my nephews and neices, i need my uncling supplies. i...i might be a bad person (in this regard) but i ... buy bags less than $10 and keep like 4 or 5.
so here's my reasoning: when i'm going to see my nephews and neices, i need my uncling supplies. i grab an empty bag and throw in some toys/games/candy whatever and i'm off.
when i am going to a protest i need some water, snacks, a bluetooth speaker, a mask... lets not enumerate every item. lets just say i grab my most nondescript black bag that i can replace for nothing if i i were to lose it somehow.
family bbq, house party, work, picnic. i have small, cheap bags, no such thing as EDC (well, i am a guy, so i have pockets for whatever i consider my edc).
anyway.... i don't know if this is a good recommendation, but i found it works for me because, other wise, i'd go through months of decision paralysis just choosing The One Bag to rule them all.
if someone said something that isn't supported by evidence, i'm likely to correct them. i realize its not really a conversation: it's closer to pedantry. but when a position is premised on a false fact, the position needs to be re-evaluated.
i don't want to tell anyone what conclusion they ought to draw on matters of opinion or when the answer is in flux, such as with ethics. and i'm not particularly interested in constructing arguments (i find it exhausting). but when someone is presenting one with false premises, i have an impulse to point it out. and it's rare that i resist that impulse.
