And just an additional note to what others have already stated, sometimes your PC can be doing just fine and performance is still a hot mess due to the current health of the SC server you're on. It's not unusual to find yourself moving smoothly but struggling to operate buttons, move inventory items around, or anything else that requires snappy conversations from the server to accomplish.

It's the practice of bundling services that rubs me the wrong way. If they'd remove YouTube Music from the picture and offer a less expensive Premium Lite, like what was trialed in Europe, I'd consider subscribing. I'm happy to pay for what I use. Conversely, I'm actually angry about always being marketed bundles of crap I don't need because one element would likely die without the other. No one ever subscribed to those pricey digital cable bundles because they just had to have the Bald Nudist Equestrian Channel.

A few years ago there was a trial run of YouTube Premium Lite in the EU market that de-bundled Music from the subscription and brought the cost down significantly. If that option existed today I'd subscribe in a hot minute, but since it doesn't, I'll just keep dodging those frustrating ads whatever way I can.

I have finished this game, and to this day it is one of my fondest memories.

When I was a kid I had a friend who was given an Atari ST with a 10MB hard disk by a family friend. It was quite the gift for the day. What no one realized until later was that the hard disk contained not one, but two Infocom text adventures; Planetfall and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It was a childhood moment of awe not terribly unlike when Cinemax would suddenly snap into perfect clarity. If you know what I mean, you know what I mean.

We spent a few weeks before summer vacation started occasionally tinkering around with Planetfall and it some point it just grabbed us. We were taking notes on how to interact with the game, drawing maps on graph paper, and pretending to be Floyd each time one of us walked into a room. Finishing Planetfall felt like an accomplishment, and with summer vacation starting, we were primed for Hitchhiker's. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.

Neither one of us were familiar with the book. We'd never heard of Douglas Adams. We just figured it must be somehow related to Planetfall since they were the only two games on this donated computer. If you've read Hitchhiker's you can imagine how difficult it was as young kids to wade through something so obtuse, so... absurd. It didn't matter. Every time we made a step forward it was like finishing Planetfall all over again. It took us all summer, but we finished Hitchhiker's.

The sheer madness of spending hours a day, every day, for our entire summer vacation camped out in front of that little screen, laying in front of bulldozers and stirring tea, permanently captured my interest and imagination. I have such a large place in my heart for Infocom and their games. I keep a gallery of screenshots of the final paragraphs of each of the games I've finished, and while I've finished quite a few by now, I still haven't finished them all.

So if you happen to run into Floyd, or Marvin, tell 'em I said hello. One of them would appreciate a nice game of hucka-bucka-beanstalk; the other, not so much.

To me, a minor issue is that the Noise label feels extreme for a comment that can be assumed to have been made in good faith, such as those being discussed here. Perhaps something as simple as a hint as to what each label is intended for in the expanded Label dialog would suffice, so as to nudge the user that Noise may also be used for redundancy, or a separate label entirely.

There's a short list of things that have always been stop and read this right now events in my online consumption:

    • Fan conspiracy theories about why Firefly is being looked at for a second season.
    • Anything involving another massive EVE Online war or intricately planned heist.
    • Pizza dough recipes with photos.

Value is relative. The cost of this tourist expedition is that other people are going to risk their own safety to find these people. If this this doesn't turn out like the last time this sub went missing, this company will cease to exist. We've seen this before at high elevations, the lines of slowly-dying tourists and their guides among the already dead, waiting their turn to take their selfies, trying to keep the litter out of frame.

I applaud what you're teaching your kid, but I feel this sort of extreme tourism isn't quite the same.

If you have the money to buy a quarter-million dollar bus ticket to the bottom of the ocean to take turns staring at a maritime grave through a porthole for funsies, I have no idea what constitutes adventure in your world.

Silly remarks aside, I do hope these people are found and returned safely. If they are, they'll certainly have a story to tell.

So both the highest and lowest points of the planet are turning into graveyards for the bored and wealthy.

Really though, if those folks are indeed alive and not already on the surface, that's got to be a special kind of terrifying. The article mentions they've got 96 hours of oxygen on board, but what about power? I'd have to imagine hypothermia is a bigger problem at that depth than oxygen in the event of a power loss, no?

If you've got the discipline to use them properly, utilize credit cards with cash rewards. By carefully selecting two or three cards you can start receiving a minimum of 2% cash back on every purchase you make. The specifics here assume you're located in the U.S. but could apply elsewhere.

    I currently use:

    • Citi Doublecash: 2% unlimited cash back on any purchase. This is my default payment method for everything unless superseded by one of my other cards with a better percentage. I use this for everything from lunch to car insurance. This card used to have another killer feature called Price Rewind - any purchase you made with the card could be reduced simply by using a website to note where you saw the item for less. Paid $45 for shoes, then found them for $35 elsewhere? Screenshot and submit, $10 refund. It took some time to process, but it was amazing. I am so sad that it's gone, and am always looking for it elsewhere.

    • Amazon Visa: 5% cash back as a Prime Member, or 3% without Prime. There are a ton of other rewards with this card, but the cash back is the important one if you, like me, use Amazon more than you probably should. Do not confuse with the Amazon Store Card, which is just a debit card.

    • Any card with a minimum 5% cash back reward in a category. Groceries and gas are big ones. Do some research and find a card that maximizes the reward for the spending you do the most. If you travel a lot, there are plenty of good deals to be had.

The catch is, of course, that you absolutely never, ever, carry a balance. You use these cards in place of cash and you pay them off immediately, every month, without fail. I rarely ever carry cash with me, and I pay off my card balances weekly as a habit. For my personal spending, I usually end up with a couple hundred extra dollars every quarter from my various cards. If you're spending for an entire family I imagine you could rack up quite a bit.

Edit: I should note that, whatever cards you look into, avoid any with annual fees.

Oh, for sure. We donate everything we can. Though for the sake of our wallets, we do try to sell some of the more valuable stuff before it gets donated. I live around a lot of folks who are just getting started - young kids, first house, newlyweds, that sort of thing. I have no problem offloading practical stuff, but for whatever reason I seem to live in the middle of a Folger's company town.

Put a table or some chairs outside and they're gone before I can close the garage door. Coffee stuff? Might as well be a cucumber with a weird looking hair stuck to it.

Things brings back memories of my days behind the bar. Every year we'd hold a fundraising event for a charity in the form of a golf outing at a local club. My job was driving the beer cart. A crappy electric golf cart with a massive cooler full of ice and beer on the back and oftentimes a bikini-clad co-pilot to toss cans at thirsty golfers. Man, back then, I loved golf.

To this day I've still never swung a club.

I feel like coffee enthusiasts will have a few items that come to mind.

I followed the path of owning some sort of typical automatic brewer, then moved on to an Aeropress, then a V60, and finally a proper espresso machine. Spanning those various pieces of coffee-making equipment are three grinders of increasing quality (and cost), as well as other distractions like a Chemex, a very nice imported moka pot, two electric kettles, two scales also of increasing quality (and cost), various filters and screens, and likely some other things I've forgotten.

The regret is partly having purchased and replaced so many items, but also the fact that I still have many of them in my home. There was a time not that long ago that I refused to even own a microwave because I prided myself on keeping things minimal, and my coffee hobby has run rampant over that. Worst of all, I've found that it's difficult to even give some of this stuff away. I'm really not a packrat, but I hate the idea of throwing away perfectly usable things.
