I learned really fast that the stated times on recipes when I tried things myself were only if you had made the recipe so often you have the ingredients on hand and already prepped

We did Hello Fresh for a while and those recipes would take my husband close to two hours to complete even with all of the items right there prepackaged

Thank you so much for saying this. I’ve run into this so many times, and I thought there was something wrong with me. I did Hello Fresh for like a year and a half, and the directions made it seem like you should be able to chop 5 different vegetables in 5 minutes. It’s a lot of work for one person, and it also used to take me at least an hour to complete one of the recipes. I feel a lot less incompetent now.

How long do you typically spend on cooking on a daily basis? Do you still make recipes even when you know it’s going to take a while? Or do you look for something certain that signals that it will be a faster recipe for you?

I am not, but I’ve always wanted to get involved with theater. I wanted to try out for school plays when I was in high school, and I even picked theater as one of my elective classes, but my parents wouldn’t allow me to actually audition for any plays. I wasn’t allowed to be around any school kids outside of school because my parents thought they were all “bad influences” on me.

So I guess I’m replying to see if anyone has any tips for trying to get involved with community theater now as an adult. I’m so afraid to try to audition without any experience. I mean I don’t even know for sure if I’d enjoy being in a play, I just think that I would. I’ve looked for acting classes but 99% of them are only for children. I’ve thought about trying improv classes just to scratch that performance itch. I’m not looking to make any money with it or get recognized or anything like that. I just think it would be fun.

    For any who aren’t familiar:
    short article
    longer article
interview on Astonishing Legends with lots of detail

Also, would you be willing to share more detail about your thoughts on Bob Lazar? His was the first UFO story that ever made me think any of them could be true. I know about some of the issues and questions around the veracity of his claims and his credibility in general, but I’m curious what your thoughts are.

I think that everyone I work with likes me and respects me, so they tend to do good work.

This is such a great point. My boss at my last job was such a great boss and leader. I respected her so much and I did some of my best work at that job because I wanted to support her (I’m a paralegal and she was the attorney I worked for) and not disappoint her. She always stood up for our team to the higher ups, and she was very liberal with her praise for good work.

Contrast that with my boss before her who had only criticisms but when I would try to get his input to avoid the issues he refused to communicate with me. I did not care about doing a good job for him at all. The only thing that really kept me in check was my sense of responsibility to my clients.

Thank you so much for sharing about your love of Phoebe! Also thank you for sharing the playlist; I was definitely curious.

When I first heard that Conor Oberst and Phoebe had made an album together I almost died. To whatever entity, force, higher power, or lack thereof that may be listening, please let them make more music together!! I think Service Road is my favorite BOCC song but I also love Chesapeake and every song they’ve ever played together. Did you ever hear their cover of Lime Tree by Bright Eyes? What an upgrade to an already amazing song.

That sounds like an awesome show to have been at! I heard about her around the same time as you when Spotify recommended to me Killer from her EP and the rest is history lol. And I also love Smoke Signals. Last year I was in really stressful circumstances related to my demanding job and a long commute. I took a sticky note and wrote “I wanna live at the Holiday Inn / Where somebody else makes the bed / We’ll watch tv while the lights on the street / Put all the stars to death” and put it next to my computer. Because sad music makes me happier.

Don’t you just hate having to miss a show that you really want to see?!? I’ve only gotten to see Phoebe once when she and Conor Oberst were touring as their band Better Oblivion Community Center. You may’ve already listened to them if you’re a Phoebe fan, but if not, I highly recommend giving their album a listen. I still have my fingers crossed that they’ll do another album together at some point. Their voices harmonize so well together, it hurts.

I wanted to recommend a good song to start with in case you haven’t listened to BOCC yet, but I can’t choose. I’ll just drop this little video of them playing Funeral together. But definitely check out their album if you like Phoebe. They did also do a tiny desk concert, oh and this performance on KEXP was dope.

Thank you for letting me indulge my love of Conor and Phoebe.

Just wish I could crawl out of the skin I’m living in
Crawl out of my mind into the outside
    Nobody could reach me

If you could crawl out of the skin you're living in
Like some kinda love just opened you up
You know when you feel it
    It's the only thing

When You Were Mine - Bright Eyes (Prince cover)
If you’re a Bright Eyes fan you probably know that they’ve been doing a series of “companion albums” to their first 9 studio albums. The companion albums are a reimagining of 5 songs from the album and one cover song that they were listening to during the time that album was recorded. All of the covers have been amazing (my other favorite cover has been Agenda Suicide). This one is from the next set of companions that’s being released next week.

'Cause I love you, baby, that's no lie
I love you more than I did
    When you were mine

    When you were mine
You were kinda sorta my best friend
    So I was blind
    I let you fool around
    I never cared
I never was the kind to make a fuss
    When he was there
Sleeping in between the two of us

    $20 - boygenius
I’m more of a Phoebe Bridgers fan than boygenius, but this single from their album is such a banger. I love the layered vocals/melodies at the end. And of course, if you follow their interviews, you’ll know that Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes) was the one who taught Phoebe how to scream. “He was like, ‘What do you mean? You just do it’,” Bridgers recalled. “So I just did it, and my voice was sore for three days but it was so fun. I highly recommend it.”

It's a bad idea and I'm all about it

It's an all-night drive from your house to Reno
To the T-bird graveyard where we play with fire
In another life, we were arsonists

Pushing the flowers that come up
Into the front of a shotgun

Anything involving Dave Matthews, Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes/solo), or Phoebe Bridgers (boygenius/solo) will always be in my top 3. I am hopelessly in love with all three of them.

I can’t believe The Twilight Zone wasn’t my first thought, but it would definitely be the most accurate answer for me given the age of the show. I still love to watch episodes and I’ve been trying to watch through all of the ones available on Paramount Plus. There are still some episodes that I’ve never seen on reruns and NYE marathons back when I had cable TV.

My first thought was actually MASH, and I added a comment under the parent comment mentioning MASH about how much and why I love the show. It feels so raw and real and I love the mix between the heaviness of war and pain and death with the humor of trying to cope with that situation. It is such a compelling show and done so well. I was born in the early 90s so I didn’t see any of it on its original run, but I used to watch reruns on cable every day when I was a teenager.

My other choice for a slightly newer show but still over 30 years old: Star Trek: TNG. This is probably my absolute favorite show of all time. It still holds up, at least for me. I loooove the dialog and slow paced-ness of this show. I find it so incredibly comforting and peaceful. The way everyone is so in touch with and open about how they feel and think and having these conversations and debates that are so civil and inclusive and thoughtful! They truly trust each other and respect each other and can disagree without being mean or cruel. It touches something deep inside my soul and brings me so much joy. Oh and the space mysteries! I love that part of it too.

This was my first thought (though strictly answering the question my answer would be The Twilight Zone because it’s older). I’m in my early 30s so I was not alive during any of the original run of MASH. My mom was a fan and introduced me to the show, and I think she watched the show as it aired. Hawkeye’s humor always reminds me so much of how my grandpa (mom’s dad) was; I just looked for the best Hawkeye quotes and this is the exact kind of thing I could hear my grandpa also saying:
“Henry: You were ordered to stand down!
Hawkeye: I did, but I fell up again.”
    https://quotecatalog.com/quote/sheldon-keller-bhenryb-y-b1redPa

I just absolutely adore Alan Alda.

And about MASH, I love the mix of comedy and heaviness. It feels so raw and real…I mean, these people were forced into their situation and just trying to make the best of it. It’s so funny and simultaneously so heartbreaking. Such a great show.

I actually haven’t read any of her other books yet other than the Wayfarers series. I was planning on starting that series now that I won’t have any more Wayfarers books to read. Thank you to @GreaterPorpoise for responding since they’ve read both.

But I can see elements of your difficulties with Psalm for the Wild Built in her other works. The plot and characters do seem to serve as more of a vehicle for exploring different ideas. The conflicts are more internal, and some people might find that to be boring if they prefer a different style of book. But the themes and concepts that Chambers explores are some of my favorites to read about - existence, kindness, thoughtfulness, community, consciousness, etc. I like her books for the same reasons I like Star Trek TNG: a utopia where people can sit around and discuss philosophy and emotions and explore who they are in a world that accepts them.

Hello all! I signed up for tildes back on 2018 but haven’t been super active. I check in every once in a while. Like many others, I’ve heard about the changes with Reddit and I’ve honestly enjoyed my time there less and less over the past several years. But I just can’t seem to stop doom scrolling there.

About me, I love reading, playing games (video and board), watching TV, listening to vinyls, going to concerts. I try to draw every once in a while but I don’t practice enough. I’m into sci-fi, horror, true crime, the paranormal.

Yes, I'm very farsighted. I think my prescriptions are +5.75 and +6.00, so I don't have the option to not wear my glasses. I got my first pair of glasses when I was two years old after my parents noticed I was crossing one of my eyes. Turns out, I was doing that to focus my vision. I wore contacts for a few years, but I got tired of wearing them. My eyes felt constantly dry and I hated having to make sure I had my case, solution, eye drops, and backup glasses with me at all times. I really like my current pair of glasses. I have transition lenses, but I really want to get a pair of prescription sunglasses at some point.

I don't look forward to the day when I start becoming nearsighted as well due to aging.
