Haunting covers, or something like that
Hey folks,
A few years ago I went in to the basement room where the cool kids hung out while they did video conversions and such. They had a playlist in the background of "Haunting Covers" or something like that. It was a take on all different music, but played in a really chilled, gothic style and by a mix of un/lesser-known artists.
Does anyone have some recommendations? To give you an idea, one of the more known tracks I heard while I was there was Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit but covered by Tori Amos.
Thanks.
Mad World cover by Gary Jules from Donnie Darko. It's just an incredible take on the song. It's beautiful and chilling. It is already fairly popular so it seems obvious but if I'm ever in a particular mood, I'll throw it on.
That's just reminded me of "A girl like you" by Machine Gun Kelly and Travis Barker for Paradise City.
Thanks, I'll add this to my playlist.
Is it too obvious to mention Johnny Cash’s version of Hurt?
That one is an absolute classic.
Tori Amos' cover of I don't like Mondays is plaintively chilling.
I don’t think this counts but I’ve always liked Lana Del Rey’s cover of Once Upon a Dream.
The best one I can think of at the moment is The Lemonheads cover of the song 'Skulls' by The Misfits.
Out of season, but David Bazan has an album of Christmas songs called Dark Sacred Night.
Not sure any of these count, but they're all (IMO) good none the less. The Lemonheads have two whole albums of covers by various artists (Varshons and Varshons 2) in addition to a smattering of cover songs throughout their discography; 'Luka' is probably their most well known. That Handsome Devil has an EP of songs from The Jungle Book.
I’d say this qualifies. As The World Caves In - Matt Maltese (Cover by Sarah Cothran)
Ooooh, I've got a couple good ones for this:
I waited 'til dreams
Like my heart, were all broken
The flowers were all dead
And the words were unspoken
The grief that I knew
Was beyond all consoling
The beat of my heart
Was a bell that was tolling—
Saddest of Sundays
Gloomy Sunday by Diamanda Galás
This version of Gloomy Sunday scratches that "haunting" itch for me every single time. Galás in general is a master of that chilled-out Gothic vibe you're looking for!
Man, that's rarefied air, glad to see someone still remembers her. I can only think of one artist I've seen recently that's even close to her orbit. Definitely check out Findlay. Wait for it.
Phenomenal recommendation! I was even actively waiting for it and the vocal transition waffled me anyway. I'll have to throw her into my rotation, thank you for giving Findlay a shout here.
My pleasure man. She's not Diamanda, but I'd be willing to bet she knows who Diamanda is, and I am so happy to see this sound continue in any form.
There's an excellent cover of Hey Ya (Outkast) by Sleep Token. I highly recommend it.

I think you will like...
And maybe try a heavier one just for fun.
Some of those are amazing! Thank you.
Loving Cat Power, Dirt Miller & Bonny so far.
Soap&Skin - Voyage Voyage

nature boy by pomplamoose is a great cover (and haunting)
Agenda Suicide by Bright Eyes - original song by The Faint. I’m not sure if it totally fits as haunting, but those horns really get me right in the soul.
Andrew VanWyngarden (of MGMT fame) managed to turn that annoying Dance Monkey song into a pretty haunting doom & gloom cover - https://youtube.com/watch?v=NE9otdpMqCk
I love the cover of Springsteens I'm On Fire by Bat For Lashes:

There's an excellent cover of Hey Ya (Outlast) by Sleep Token. I highly recommend it.
To Love Somebody - Billy Corgan
A cover of the Bee Gees song featuring Robert Smith of The Cure on backing vocals during the chorus. This song brings out my inner goth.
House of the Rising Sun by Alt J fits the bill nicely (even if I think the dark/dramatic cover trend is a little played out at this point).
